Lance Armstrong Memorabilia Benefits Relay for Life

07/06/2005
Lance Armstrong is coming to Brookings.

Well, the world famous cyclist's signature anyway.

A number of autographed paraphernalia has been donated by an executive of Nike. A hat signed by Armstrong as well as a special edition shirt will be auctioned off locally. The black and yellow shirt reads "Tete de Course" which is French for "Head of the Course."

Tickets for the auction will be available within the next couple of days at the Escape Hatch Sports & Cycle Shop. Tickets will also be available at the Relay For Life walk on July 8 and 9 at the Brookings-Harbor High School track. The walk begins at 6 p.m. Friday, July 8. Particpants in the walk will be active on the track all night. Closing ceremonies are at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9.

Each ticket for the raffle will cost $1 and the winners will be announced at Escape Hatch Sports on Aug. 30.

In addition to the hat and shirt that will be locally auctioned off, an autographed Armstrong Tour de France yellow winner's jersey will be sold on eBay. Two signed Sports Illustrated magazines will be sold online as well. One SI was signed by Armstrong, featuring a cover photo of him as the 2002 Sportsman of the Year, and the other by NBA basketball star Carmello Anthony.

All of the proceeds from the eBay items will go towards the American Cancer Society.

The gifts come to Brookings through a connection that resident Susan Gager, registrar for the Brookings Relay For Life, has with Nike. Her brother, Mark Parker, is the co-president of the company.

Nike has been a sponsor of Armstrong since his early days of riding. After Armstrong was diagnosed with cancer in 1996 and survived, he has become a major source of inspiration for others who are battling or surviving cancer.

"I remember thinking, if he can beat it, and he did, then I'm home free," said Diane Cavaness, a cancer survivor and Relay for Life co-chair. "I've looked up to him ever since."

Since recovering from cancer, Armstron
