Buddy Boren’s Tour De Texas 2 is taking him across the Lone Star State. The 61-year-old has cycled through the Hill Country, the flatlands of the Panhandle, the mountains of El Paso, and most recently Brownsville. But Boren isn’t on a site seeing tour, he said. He’s on a mission. Boren, a Dallas resident and cancer survivor, is trying to send a message to cancer patients — don’t give up. “Survival is possible. … I want to do something to try to help people get through what I went through. I had made a decision to fight back,” said Boren, who cycled through Brownsville on Friday. Boren had squamous cell carcinoma, a skin cancer that was detected 11 years ago. The cancer started behind his nose and went down to his neck and shoulders. He had 30 tumors removed from his neck and shoulders and went through radiation treatment. “It wasn’t looking good there for awhile, but I made it and now I’m trying to give something back,” said Boren, who has been cancer free for six years. Boren is seeking donations during his second cycling tour of Texas, and money collected will go to the Lance Armstrong Founda-tion, an organization he can relate to. Boren has ridden with Armstrong, another cancer survivor, in the Ride for the Roses in Austin. Boren started his 3,100-mile trek on July 4 in Gainsville. His ride will take 55 days. Day 33 took him through Brownsville around noon Friday. He will head out this morning to Raymondville and then Kingsville. From there he will travel through Rockport, Galveston and return to Gainsville between Aug. 26-27. http://www.brownsvilleherald.com/ts_more.php?id=66437_0_10_0_C
