| Irishman Pat McQuaid has been elected president of the International Cycling Union, the sport's governing body. The 55-year-old, favoured candidate of outgoing president Hein Verbruggen, was a winner by 31 votes to 11 over the only other candidate, Gregorio Moreno. Darsan Singh Gill of Malaysia withdrew his candidacy before the vote in a controversial campaign. Verbruggen had been president for 14 years and leaves McQuaid the task of resolving the future of the Pro Tour.
