| 11/23/2005 | South African champion Ryan Cox received South African cycling's ultimate accolade yesterday when he won the Pick 'n Pay Go Banking road cyclist of the year trophy at a gala banquet in Sandton. The Barloworld-Valsir teamster, who is rated number one in Africa and number two in Asia on the latest UCI world rankings list, was the winner of the Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia earlier this year. In tandem with Cox's award for road cycling, the reigning World Cup Series downhill champion, Greg Minnaar from Pietermaritzburg, was named as SA's best downhiller and mountain-biker. As well as accepting his awards, the former world champion thrilled the who's who of SA cycling with an incredible display of ramp jumping and some low flying two wheeled aerobatics. The gala evening filled with all of SA cycling's brightest stars was hosted by the world's leading television cycling commentators, Phil Liggett, and Paul Sherwen. www.sundaytimes.co.za/zones/sundaytimesNEW/sportst/sportst1132805922.aspx
