| 05/18/2001 | Japan Bicycle Association Wants Limits on ImportsReuters reported that Japan's largest bicycle industry group, the Japan Bicycle Association said they had asked their Trade and Industry (METI) to impose emergency curbs on bicycles imported from China and Taiwan. The Japan Bicycle Association is made up of 200 makers of bikes and bike parts. About 70 percent of the nine million bikes sold in Japan each year were imported, mostly from China and Taiwan. This number has risen greatly during the last 2 years.
"The group is preparing to make a formal request as early as this month but the process could take longer as some members who have shifted their production bases to China are taking a more cautious stance."www.reuters.com
