| 05/23/2001 | Paul Components New Disc Unit and Single Speed HubPaul and company have released the details on their two newest products the "Disk Unit" and the "Disk World Hubs". Both these new components are for Single Speed bikes.
The DISK UNIT mounts onto the Disk WORD Hub axle, and thus keeps the caliper perfectly aligned with the disk (a feat not easily accomplished with horizontal dropouts). An adjustable reaction rod attaches to the canti boss, motorcycle fashion. Since the WORD hub is firmly bolted to the frame there is much less stress on the canti stud than with similar systems. The Disk Unit is available only in black and retails for $75.
With the Disk World Hubs, Paul has take the proven design of the existing WORD and Fhub designs and added disk mount platforms for the Hayes and Shimano systems. To handle the increased tourque loads a disk places on the shell, we have increased the thickness of the flanges and the shell portion between the flanges. The Disk Word still builds a super strong dishless wheel with a standard symmetrical rim. For the Disk Fhub use an asymmetrical style rim to get full dishlessness.
The Disk Fhub is available in bolt-on or Q-R style, and the Word is bolt-on only. Both use the exact same axle assemblies as their non-disk counterparts, so replacement parts, if ever needed, are a snap. The hubs are available in black or clear anodized and the weight comes in at 181 grams and retails for $117 to $134.
