| 06/16/2001 | Illegally Imported Bikes Entering MexicoMexico is having an increased problem dealing with illegally imported bicycles. According to the Mexico Daily paper the Reforma, around half a million bicycles are illegally imported into Mexico each year. Over 95% of the bikes come from China, the remaining 5% from South Korea and the United States.
Fernando Mejia Basurto, president of Mexico's National Association of Bicycle Manufacturers said most illegally imported bicycles were sold in the Federal District, which houses Mexico City, and the state of Jalisco, home to Guadalajara, Mexico's second-largest metropolis. Local manufacturers have seen the sales fall by 30 percent during the first four months of the current year, largely due in part to the smuggled bicycles. |
