Racing News for 7/18/01+TOUR DE FRANCE

STAGE 11: American Lance Armstrong (USPS) left the Alps, and most of his rivals' hopes behind, with another impressive exhibition of power during Stage 11, a time trial to Chamrousse. Today, just as yesterday, Jan Ullrich (Telekom) and Joseba Beloki (ONCE) finished second and third, while Frenchman Francois Simon (Bonjour) retained the maillot jaune despite losing seven minutes to the stage winner.

Throughout most of the day, the time trial was dominated by a spirited performance by Spaniard Roberto Laiseka (Euskatel) who set an early pace at 1.09:30, good enough for fourth place by the end of the day at 2:03 behind. Subsequent strong performances by young Oscar Sevilla (KEL), Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano (ONCE) and Joseba Beloki (ONCE) demonstrated that the contingency of Spanish climbers in this year's race may be one of Armstrong's few remaining threats.

Armstrong decided against using a typical time trial bike and chose to utilize the same bike he used the day before during his epic Alpe d'Huez victory. Armstrong led every check point, with his now-trademark fast spin style, and left little doubt he was fully recovered from yesterday's legend-in-the-making effort.

Rest day tomorrow.
