STAGE 16: - German Jens Voigt won his first solo stage victory on Wednesday after two previous moments of glory in the race went largely unnoticed. Voigt already had won one stage after helping his team, Credit Agricole to
win the team time trial. The German even wore the yellow jersey for a day after finishing in a successful breakaway with Laurent Jalabert, who won the stage on Bastille Day, taking all the attention. Voigt was finally in the spotlight on Wednesday as he surged past an exhausted Brad McGee to take the 16th stage after an heroic break on a blisteringly hot day. Voigt escaped as part of a seven-man group after 61 km of the 229.5 km stage from
Castelsarrasin to Sarran. He and McGee staged their own solo breakaway with 25 km to go before the Australian faded, leaving Voigt to enjoy the run-in to the finish line.

STAGE 17: Belgium's Serge Baguet won the 17th stage, while Armstrong continues to ride on to overall victory. The peloton was 13 seconds behind Baguet as he went for the line to edge out Dane Jakob Piil, with Masimiliano Lelli five seconds behind. The three were part of a 16 man breakaway that escaped early. All the others were caught by the peloton in the last few kilometers. With just three days to go before the finish in Paris, attention on Thursday was focused on the battle for the green jersey for best sprinter. Germany's Erik Zabel, who has taken the prize for the past five years, trailed Australian Stuart O'Grady by 12 points going into the stage and with the finish line in sight the pair moved to the front of the pack. Zabel claimed sixth place in the closing sprint to win 20 points but O'Grady
was right on his wheel once again to finish seventh and limit the damage to just a single point.

VAUGHTERS WITHDRAWS: American Jonathan Vaughters (Credit Agricole) abandon the Tour on Tuesday, after he was bitten by a bee, which caused the top part of his eye to be swollen. The treatment recommended by the doctors was based on a corticoid, which is a banned substance by the UCI.

EIGHT OF SIXTEEN: Eight of the sixteen urine controls done at the last two Pirenees’ stages came back positive for corticoids, although the riders had medical permission to use the substances. Most of the users use sulbutamol
and other anti-asthma substances.

TELEKOM GIVES UP: Team Telekom seems to have given up, after Armstrong’s superiority and are already looking at the 2002 season. “I think that Jan can win a second Tour, maybe next year, said his director, Walter Godefroot.
“Armstrong has shown his strength in all terrain and that is the difference. I can’t understand how he can win by training, but something in his head has changed since his sickness. Armstrong works 12 months a year, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. He thinks of every detail, every screw, every pedal stroke”.

JALABERT’S RETIREMENT: Laurent Jalabert, former number 1 rider in the world, will retire from professional cycling at the end of next year. The 32-year-old, whose CSC team was given a wildcard invitation by the Tour de
France organizers, is currently wearing the polka dot jersey for the Tour's best climber after his 162-kilometers breakaway on Saturday's second Pyrenean stage, which was won by Lance Armstrong. Jalabert, from southern France, only has to grab a minimum of the remaining 60 points available, prior to Tuesday's 15th stage, to become only the third rider to have won both the green points and polka dot jerseys. Despite his late success and recent show of form, however, Jalabert said he is sticking by a promise made to his family and his last hurrah in the Tour will be next year.

"After such a good Tour campaign this year it's difficult for me to announce that I will definitely stop next year," Jalabert told French sports daily L'Equipe. "But I will stop after next year's Tour. I've a family and I've made a promise. Even before the Tour started I decided that I would aim to finish in 2002."

The thought of following French legend Bernard Hinault and Belgian ace Eddy Merckx in adding the polka dot jersey to the green jerseys he won in 1992 and 1995 was not his ambition, despite a return to form after a disastrous
start to the season.

In February Jalabert fell off a ladder while working at home, fracturing several ribs and, as he lay in hospital, feared his career might be over. But the veteran bounced back in style, winning the fourth stage, then on Bastille day's seventh stage, on July 14, he added his second stage win. Before then Jalabert had only ever won two stages in his nine previous Tours, in 1992 and in 1995, the year in which he came fourth to just miss out on a podium place.

MAYO RENEWS: Spaniard Iban Mayo, one of Spanish cycling promises has renewed his contract for two seasons with his Team Euskaltel-Euskadi. Twenty three-year old Mayo, distinguished himself this season by winning the overall at the Midi Libre, the Clasique des Alpes and taking the most difficult stage at the Dauphine Libere.

MILLWARD POSITIVE: Australian number one in the world, Anna Wilson-Millward, has tested positive at an anti-doping control in France and now awaits the results of a counter analysis, revealed today James Victor, Coach for
the AIS Women’s Cycling Team. The test done in France two months ago revealed the presence of an anesthetic used for insect bites. Victor assured that said substance is authorized by the Australian antidoping agency and the
Olympic Committee, although the rules are different for the UCI. If found guilty, Millward could be sanctioned with a warning or up to a three month suspension.
