| 08/07/2001 | PA Physician General Encourages Bike-Helmet SafetyPennsylvania's Physician General, Dr. Rob Muscalus, today reminded Pennsylvanians of all ages of the importance of wearing bike helmets when riding a bicycle to prevent injury.
"The summer is a wonderful time of year to bike outdoors, but it is important to prevent injury by always wearing a bike helmet," Dr. Muscalus said. "Helmets are the single most important protection against head and brain injuries."
When purchasing a helmet, take time when selecting it and make sure it fits properly. Fasten the helmet so that it fits tightly when riding. It should be comfortable but snug. Developing good bike-safety habits from the beginning will ensure consistency and less injury. Children ages 11 and under are required by law to wear helmets when riding a bike.www.health.state.pa.us
