+ NEWS LA CLASICA SAN SEBASTIAN: It has been announced that neither Lance Armstrong nor Jan Ullrich will be at the start of the Clasica San Sebastian tomorrow. Even with their absence, the field will have plenty of classic-maniacs, like Erik Dekker, Francesco Casagrande, Gianluca Bortolami, Davide Rebellin and Johan Musseuw, to list a few. Also Joseba Beloki, who finished third at the Tour, behind Armstrong and Ullrich will be present, along with Igor González de Galdeano, who finish fifth. The top riders in the World Cup competition before the race are: Dekker 199 points, Bortolami 121, Musseuw 116, Vainsteins 116 & Camenzind 112.
IÑIGO CHAURREAU SIGNS WITH AG2R: Spanish cyclist Iñigo Chaurreau (Euskaltel-Euskadi), has signed for the next two seasons with French Team AG2R. Chaurreau will go to the French team together with his cousin Mikel Astarloza, who will start as a neo pro. Charreau, who finished 12th overall at the last Tour de France, rode for Euskaltel-Euskadi, after coming from Italian Team Polti where he rode for 2 years.
NEW BOSSES AT TEAM COAST: German Team Coast of Alex Zulle and Fernando Escartin will have new directors next year. The team will be under the orders of ex-Festina sprinter, German Marcel Wust, who retired after he injured his eye in a sprint. Wust will be joined by Festina director Juan Fernandez as his assistant. Fernandez has been sport director at Clas and Mapei.
[Ed: It will be great to see him at the helm of a German team. I saw him in my Tour trip and I could tell how well liked he is by everyone. He was interviewed on separate occasions and on one of those occasions I witnessed how he switched between German, French, English and Spanish. At least the Spanish and English I heard him speak were perfect. Best of luck for Marcel from InfoCiclismo.]
DRUG TEST CONSIDERED UNRELIABLE: The new drug test to detect EPO has been deemed unreliable by Danish authorities. The Danish Doping Board acquitted cyclist Bo Hamburger of charges that he used EPO. The test approved by the UCI was designed to provide a fast and reliable method of detecting the hormone EPO. The Sports Confederation of Denmark's three-member drug panel said the A-sample and one of the B-samples were positive but the second B-sample was negative, causing reasonable doubt. Bjarne Riis, manager of Hamburger's team CSC Tiscali, immediately lifted the team suspension imposed on the cyclist. Hamburger insists he never used banned drugs. In April, Hamburger was the first cyclist with positive results from the new test, which uses a urine sample to detect the drug. The previous method examined red blood cells.
