+ NEWS CLIPPINGS Virenque battles to rebuild reputation (The Independent, London) By Lawrence Tobin 16 August 2001
Richard Virenque, a national hero in France before his fall from grace last autumn when he finally confessed to using the banned drug EPO, was unable to ride in the Tour de France this summer. But the nine-month suspension has now ended and Virenque, who had denied taking EPO for two years, wants to move on.
"It's been very difficult but I will try to use all that happened to get stronger," he said. "If I had known I would have to pay that much of course I would have thought twice.
"I watched the first day of the Tour de France this year and it made me cry, then the only stage I followed was the Alpe d'Huez. After that I kept an eye on it, that was all."

Today's stage was a fairly flat one with a moderate breeze making things moderately testing. The Australians were focused on Graeme Brown and the sprint classification as well as Allan Davis and the GC. Graeme won the first sprint before a group of 5 got clear which got to a dangerous 3 minutes before a few concerned teams collaborated to get it back by the 128km mark. Graeme won the 3rd sprint as well to take equal lead in the classification, taking the jersey on a countback. The finish was a bunch sprint in which the Australians were blocked for a run although Allan recovered to finish 11th moving to 4th on the overall.
