STAGE 3: Spanish rider Carlos Sastre (ONCE-Eroski), won today the third stage, which covered 154 km between Briviesca and the climb of San Juan del Monte, coming in four seconds ahead of a group, including overall leader Juan Miguel Mercado. Sastre attacked very forcefully on the last kilometers, gaining valuable meters, which would end up being decisive.
The first break of the day went away at km 22 and included Angel Casero (Festina) and Sabaliauskas (Saeco), who were both threats for the overall. They were accompanied by Massimo Apollonio (Tacconi Vini Caldirola), Elio Aggiano (Mapei-Quick Step), Martín Garrido (Relax Fuenlabrada), Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and José Gutiérrez (Kelme-Costa Blanca). This group was able to reach a 3 minute advantage by km 90, which gave the overall lead provisionally to Sabaliauskas, which caused iBanesto.com to work for Mercado, bringing the gap down to 2 minutes. Then with 30 kms to go, ONCE joined in the front and the break was finally caught with 5 kms to the finish. Many attackers would try to get away, but it would be Sastre’s attack that would stick.

Italian Francesco Casagrande (Fassa Bortolo) won today the 55th edition of the Coppa Ugo Agostoni, the Classic Italian racem with start and finish in Lissone (197 km). Casagrande stole the race from German Jan Ullrich (Telekom), while third place went to Italian Gianluca Tonetti (Selle Italia-Pacific). Like a year ago, Ullrich launched a sprint, but with 200 meters to go, Casagrande was able to pass him. This is the fourth seasonal win for Casagrande, in what has turned out to be a bitter year, due to the injuries that conspired to make him miss the finish of the Giro and Tour. Francesco spoke enthusiastically after the win: “To beat Ullrich is a win that counts double. I passed him at 200 meters, after he launched a long and zig-zagging approach to the line. Jan was riding a huge gear, but in the end, he was left behind”. Casagrande looks with optimism towards the Worlds in Lisbon: “For two years I have finished closed to the title, the demanding route in Lisbon should favor me this time”.

STAGE 2: Frenchman David Moncoutié (Cofidis), kept things French by taking the second stage, which covered 166.5 km between Saint Just le Martel and Ussel. Franck Bouyer (Bonjour), finished 13th, but was able to hang on to the leader’s jersey. The only excitement in an otherwise tranquil day was the unsuccessful breakaway by Frenchmen Bruno Thibout (Jean Delatour), Gilles Maignan (AG2R) and Gilles Canouet, from an amateur team.

ZABEL WON’T BE IN ZURICH: German Erik Zabel (Telekom), winner of the Hew Classic in Hamburg, announced today that he won’t ride the coming World Cup event in Zurich, which is the eighth event of the series. Zabel is in second place in the World Cup competition, 69 points behind Dutchman Erik Dekker (Rabobank). Zabel’s teammate Ullrich, will ride the race as team leader.
Interestingly enough, according to a recent popularity poll done in Germany, Erik Zabel is more popular that Jan Ullrich. The poll done by the polling institute "Sport & Mark" shows that 87% of German fans sympathize with Zabel, while only 84% feel that way about Ullrich.
