| 08/23/2001 | Governor Canidate on a Tour de MassSenate President Thomas F. Birmingham is on 250 mile campaign bicycle tour through Massachusettes. Birmingham is an unannounced candidate for governor next year has named his journey across the state as "Tour De Mass". Birmingham and an entourage started pedaling in Great Barrington on Tuesday. They plan to wind up in Sandwich on Cape Cod on Aug. 30.
Wearing loose black shorts and a white, nylon short-sleeve shirt, Birmingham was shadowed by a police escort as he rode through busy streets in Chicopee, Holyoke, and Springfield. "I'd like to tell people who I am as a person and what I've done as an elected official," said Birmingham, 52, during a stop in Holyoke.
Republicans are criticizing the 250-mile trek as a political gimmick. But Birmingham's own spin is different.
