STAGE 4: Italian Massimo Apollonio (Tacconi - Vini Caldirola), won the sprint that decided the fourth stage, which was held between Oña and Medina de Pomar (184 km), while Spanish rider Juan Miguel Mercado (iBanesto.com) held on to the overall lead. There were early attacks on this hot day by Fabio Roscioli (Jazztel-Costa de Almería), who was joined by Francisco Cerezo (CSC-Tiscali) by km 22. On the first descent of the climb of Bocos (km 45), they were joined by Toni Tauler (Kelme-Costa Blanca) and together they opened a five-minute advantage. The trio would get caught on the second climb of Bocos, with the peloton rejoining with 22 kms to go. The last portion was raced at a very high pace and in the end Apollonio dominated the sprint.

STAGE 5: Spaniard Juan Miguel Mercado (iBanesto.com) won today the overall classification of the XXIII Vuelta a Burgos, which concluded with a 164 km stage between Melgar de Fernamental and Burgos. The stage was won in the sprint by compatriot Oscar Freire (Mapei-Quick Step), ahead of Gianpaolo Mondini (Mercatone Uno) and David Fernández (Relax Fuenlabrada), whom he easily beat.

TONKOV TRANSFERRING TO LAMPRE, SIMONI STAYING: Gilberto Simoni will stay at Lampre-Daikin with Giuseppe Saronni. It is now official, the 2001 Giro d’ Italia winner has reached an agreement with Lampre boss Mario Galbusera for a two year contract. Simoni will be joined at Lampre by Russian Pavel Tonkov, who won the Giro in 1996 and is leaving American Team Mercury. But Lampre’s acquisitions haven’t ended yet, there is talk of an interest in Mercatone Uno’s Christian Moreni.
