26.08.2001 Championship of Zurich (World Cup)

In the midst of an excrutiatingly hot and humid day, Paolo Bettini (Italy) brought back the joy of World Cup winning back to the Mapei- Quick Step camp. It is no secret that the Italian Super Team, has struggled most of the year as their riders have been slowed by injuries and lack of form. Today, Paolo Bettini only had to follow the wheel everyone expected would be followed, that of German star Jan Ullrich. Ullrich instigated the winning selection with a power move off a leading group of twenty riders with less than 30kms to go. Only a select few could follow Ullrich's move, and, at the line it would be a four-man sprint: Bettini, Ullrich, Francesco Casagrande (Ita/Fassa Bortolo), and
an in-form Fernando Escartin(Esp/Team Coast).

Escartin led out the sprint, but, was overtaken by Ullrich and Bettini on the line and settled for third place. Not a bad showing for Escartin in a World Cup race. Erik Dekker arrived 5th to consolidate his lead in the World Cup series. Lance Armstrong, as well as two-thirds of the field failed to finish due in large part to the weather conditions.

The next event will be Paris-Tours on October 7th.

JULICH LOOKING: It is being reported that Bobby Julich (USA) has not been offered a 2002 contract by Credit Agricole. After the recent signing of Frenchman Cristophe Moreau and the renewal of in-demand riders such as Jens Voight (GER) and Stewart O'Grady (AUS), it would appear Credit Agricole has decided to go in a different direction.
Julich continues to show good form towards the tail-end of this campaign and should be able to attract offers to continue as a strong European-based cyclist.
