| 08/28/2001 | Introducing the 2001 Varna "Diablo"Forte, Human Powered Machinery is a custom bicycle and accessory fabrication company based in Victoria, B.C. Last year Sam Whittingham pedaled the Varna Mephisto, a bike designed and built by George Georgiev, set a 200M Flying start record for single rider human powered vehicles at high altitude during the 2000 World Human Powered Speed Challenge. His time was 6.15 seconds which equates to 72.74 MPH! The previous World Record Holder's time was 6.5 seconds which equates to 68.72mph.
This year Steve will be riding the new Varna Diable that is similar to the Mephisto. The construction is the same tub-type design with double reduction front wheel drive/steer on 24" carbon disk wheels. The main differences are size and the addition of wheel fairings in both front and rear. Mephisto was built 6 years ago with it's debut run in Las Vegas. The new bike will be ready for competition in October.
