Stage 5: German sprinter Danilo Hondo, from Team Telekom, won stage 5 of the Ronde van Nederland over 191 km, held between Markelo-Goor and Velo. The stage featured a 170+ kilometer escape from Dutch rider Marcel Llupes (AXA). It was, however, not meant to be for the Dutchman who was caught with about 17 kms to the line. The general classification remained unchanged going into the last day of the race.

Today, Dutchman Leon Van Bon provided Team Mercury with arguably the team's biggest win of the year as he managed to snatch victory in the final classification of the Ronde van Nederland. After a year full of hardship and bad luck, this surprise victory came in the style that brought Team Mercury to the top of the heap in the U.S. domestic scene: hard-nosed, opportunistic riding. Van Bon joined a breakway of six, including fellow Dutchman and former teammate Martin Den Bakker (RAB) and never looked back. With about 15 kms, prerace favorite and current World Cup leader Erik Dekker (RAB) bridged across the gap in an attempt to take advantage of the weakened Liquigas team of race leader Sergei Gonchar. Dekker, in a bid to win the race, attacked the breakway, but Van Bon would not fold. At the finish line, Dekker won the stage and the battle, but Van Bon stole the war!
