STAGE 3: It seems that Erik Zabel has bad intentions. The German rider from Team Telekom has abused for the second day in a row the rest of the sprinters that are participating at the Vuelta, by taking both stages by a full bike length. Not only that, but Zabel is within reach of taking over the spot held by Lance Armstrong of #1 ranked rider in the world. Today’s stage was an eventful one because of all the crashes and splits in the peloton. British David Millar, held on for the third day to the Golden Jersey.
The early part of the stage was raced nervously and resulted in a few crashes due to the strong winds. The peloton was split in two, leaving Abraham Olano and Marco Pantani behind. Oscar Freire and Haimar Zubeldia (Euskaltel), suffered injuries to the shoulder and knee, but the worst part went to Swiss Marcus Zberg, who had to retired from the stage due to an injury sustained in the shoulder. The first attack of the day came from Spaniard César García Calvo (Fuenlabrada), but was short lived. Then Dutchman Karsten Kroon went away at km 89 and opened a 1 minute advantage by km 107. The wind didn’t play as bug a part as initially expected in the latter part of the stage, so the peloton allowed Kroon to get away, only to get caught with 17 kms to go. With a united peloton, the teams with sprinters would start to jockey for position. Zabel’s Telekom played their cards right and with 8 kms to go, lead the sprinter perfectly to the finish.
