| 09/13/2001 | Xterra Inspires New K2 Mountain BikesXTERRA Gear and K2 Bike today announced a multi-year agreement to produce and distribute a series of ATB bicycles featuring the K2 and XTERRA brand names. Inspired by the XTERRA WORLD TOUR and CHAMPIONSHIPS, the new K2-XTERRA Mountain Bikes will be developed for a wide range of off-road enthusiasts. XTERRA professionals, competitive amateur athletes, and the recreational weekend biker will all find a K2-XTERRA branded bicycle designed for them.
In all, 6 new mountain bikes will be created in the K2-XTERRA line. Beginning early next year, these models will be available at major, U.S. retailers, through XTERRA Gear, and on-site at each 2002 XTERRA race venue.
"For K2, the partnership with XTERRA is a natural reflection of the active-outdoor lifestyle both organizations share with our fans and consumers," said Sandy Liman, Vice President of K2 Bikes. "The new K2-XTERRA bikes will embody this same spirit…the thirst for natural challenges and the overall appreciation of the outdoors."
"We are very excited about these new bikes," continued Liman. "By using the XTERRA mountain biking venue as our benchmark, we have been able to build upon the already-advanced K2 technology. Each K2-XTERRA bike will feature a complete, ready-to-race-or-ride accessory package, which will raise performance, durability, and comfort to a level not currently available in the retail bicycle market."
XTERRA Gear's Executive Vice President, Bob Russell said, "K2 is the embodiment of the passion and commitment our athletes bring to their outdoor, active lifestyle. We believe this agreement is only the tip of the iceberg of the possibilities which exist with K2."
On-Site Promotions Planned In 2002, Xterra will produce more than 27 events in nine countries, including 17 regional and 4 championship events here in the USA. Each venue will lead up to the World Championships in Maui. According to Liman, these events are a unique opportunity to showcase K2 Bike and the complete family of K2 lifestyle sports equipment. (K2 is the only hard-goods manufacturing company in the world that produces skis, snowboards, bikes, and in-line skates.)
"The XTERRA lifestyle is the K2 lifestyle," said Liman. "We have a venue where we can talk with the athletes and let them see, feel, and ride our products in an exciting and authentic environment. K2 Bike will put the power of the K2 brand behind the XTERRA World Tour, and K2 technology will be hard at work to produce a series of K2-XTERRA bikes with the clear purpose of becoming the "king of the mountains" at each XTERRA event, or on any trail you ride."
XTERRA has become a respected and recognized brand in the world of off-road, multi-sport competition. Its 30 events this year include 18 races that comprise the Nissan Xterra USA Championship Series and the XTERRA World Tour. The company launched its own brand of athletic wear, XTERRA Gear, in 1999. Its licensing agreements now include Saucony, Santa Cruz Sports Nutrition, Freestyle Watches, K2, XTERRA Wet and Zeal Optics.www.k2bikes.com
