| 09/15/2001 | Bike League Name Carrboro, NC Bicycle Friendly CityThe League of American Bicyclists, the national membership organization of cyclists, has named Carrboro, North Carolina a Bicycle-Friendly Community. The presentation, previously scheduled for the evening of September 11, was postponed given our national tragedy, and will be rescheduled in the near future. Michael O’Connor, League member and President of the local Carolina Tarwheels bicycle club, will present the award to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen at an upcoming meeting of the Board. Carrboro is the first community in North Carolina to win the distinction.
Carrboro becomes the 55th American community recognized by the League for actively supporting local cycling and meeting the League’s established criteria for bicycle infrastructure. The League’s Bicycle-Friendly Communities Campaign is building a bicycle-friendly America in the most effective way possible—city by city, town by town, and county by county.
Carrboro has made an ongoing commitment to bicycle facility planning since 1980, and has adopted a number of ordinances and policy provisions to improve bicycle safety on its streets and paths. The League applauds the many accomplishments of Carrboro’s Mayor, Transportation Advisory Board, and Board of Aldermen and their support for bicycling and the Town’s Bicycle Policy. Carrboro has clearly recognized that supporting bicycling is good for the community because bicycle facilities are an important quality of life indicator, in the same way good schools, green parks and clean and safe streets are.
Carrboro has a vital combination of interested citizens, responsive and responsible elected officials, and committed Town staff, who have worked together to create a livable community in which people have a range of safe and convenient travel choices. The Transportation Advisory Board has lead the way on bicycling issues since it was formed in 1980 to study and make recommendations on all transportation matters. Carrboro has utilized its bonding authority to develop bike lanes and bike ways, has worked cooperatively to include bike lanes in all state road improvement projects, made bike lanes a requirement on all collector roads, and placed bike parking facilities at Town Hall and the Century Center to encourage residents to bike to work and shopping.
The League also recognizes the Carrboro Board of Aldermen’s annual proclamation of National Bike Month and Bike-to-Work Day, and the Town’s Bikeways map (with information on existing and proposed bike lanes and paths), as effective promotions of bicycling for Carrboro residents.
