| 09/24/2001 | Browning Components Computer Controlled Auto 12-SpeedThe Brownings, a Seattle, WA family with a prominent heritage of quality craftsmanship and design developed the SmartShift automatic bicycle transmission.
After 100 years of custom firearm design and manufacturing, the fourth generation family members began focusing their creative energies on bicycles and bicycle components. The SmartShift Technology combines leading edge computer technology with mechanical expertise.
Browning Component, Inc., plans to introduce a 12-speed automatic bicycle transmission at this year's Interbike Show in Las Vegas. The SmartShift 1200 features 12 gears without overlap, and computer controlled shifting that can be customized to individual riding styles. The system's patented split-sprocket design allows smooth uphill shifting under full pedal force without slipping or grinding.
The SmartShift Technology was originally developed for racing, and with the full support of the U.S. cycling federation, the SmartShift enabled the top two U.S. riders to obtain seasonal best times in the 96 Olympic Kilometer trials. Miron Baramia, UCI Track & Olympic Games Coordinator commented, "The `SmartShift' is very technologically sound. It's fantastic."
The SmartShift 1200 will be available for shipment in January 2002, and complements the SmartShift 400, which is now available in select Puget Sound bicycle shops including Gregg's Greenlake Cycle and Montlake Bicycle Shops.
