STAGE 14: Spaniard Juan Manuel Garate (Lampre), took his first win as a pro on Saturday, in a stage which was raced under rain between Tarragona and Vinaroz. The favorites for the overall saved their strengths for Sunday's stage into Aitana, which should rattle the overall. Garate (25) was able to sneak into a breakaway of 14 riders at km 76 and the peloton didn't do anything to bring it back. The break included the presence of Spaniards Carlos Golbano (Jazztel), Oscar Laguna (Relax) and Jon Odriozola (iBanesto.com), German Jorg Jaksche (ONCE) and Italians Mariano Piccoli (Lampre) and Salvatore Commesso (Saeco). With four kilometers to the finish line, Garate and compatriot Juan Carlos Dominguez (iBanesto.com) went on the attack. At the finish line, Garate forced Dominguez to lead the sprint and was the fastest in the sprint. Overall leader Oscar Sevilla (Kelme) had an easy day.

STAGE 15: Sunday's stage was not only the longest of this edition of the Vuelta a España with 211 km (130.8 miles), but it was accompanied By three category 2 climbs and the 19 km climb to the finish at the alto de Aitana, considered a Special Category climb. The first bit of action came from an early escape by Spaniard Pedro Diaz Lobato (Jazztel), who would later be joined and then dropped by Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha (Relax) and Luxemburg's Benoit Joachim (US Postal), both of whom worked together until the last climb, where they were caught by the splintered peloton. Meanwhile, ONCE's Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano abandoned today, probably with the same viral pulmonary problem that affected his teammate Joseba Beloki. Also Argentinian Martin Garrido (Relax) suffered a fall and had to be taken to the hospital, but he didn't suffer serious injuries.
Ibanesto.com had come out in force driving and blowing up the peloton by setting the pace up front to set up "el Chava", who was the the big favorite to rule the day. But "King of the Mountain" Jose Maria Jimenez (iBanesto.com) "hit the wall" on this last ascent and shot off the back of the lead group, losing more than 12 minutes by the end of the climb. The day would turn out to be a duel between second overall Angel Casero (Festina) and overall leader Oscar Sevilla (Kelme). Kelme's Pipe Gomez would take over on the pace making in front, to set "protect" Sevilla from attacks, but Sevilla would ask his teammate to slow down, which Casero noticed and used to his advantage going on the attack, which put Sevilla in trouble.
At the front, Dane Klaus Moller (Maia), was taking advantage of the fight for the overall to go away almost invisibly and eventually take the stage. Meanwhile US Postal's Rubiera and Heras also took advantage of the attacks against Sevilla to cut their margins and skip some places in the overall. ONCE's only man in the front was Carlos Sastre, who also took advantage of Sevilla's weakness. Ironically enough, Sevilla would be driven by an iBanesto.com trio (Aitor Osa, Juan Carlos Dominguez), which was driving Juan Miguel Mercado to protect his third place overall. Italian Gilberto Simoni also made attempts, which were matched by Heras and American revelation Levi Leipheimer would lose ground today, although still coming in 19th at 2:26. Casero's drive up the mountain would be good to take away some time from Sevilla, but by the end of the day the Kelme rider would still have an overall lead of 25 seconds. A lead which many consider too slim, since Casero is considered a better time trialist than Sevilla.

WHERE IS SIMONI GOING?: There were rumors that Gilberto Simoni (Lampre) was in conversations with Team Acqua&Sapone, but apparently they are just rumors. After several days of discussions, Team Lampre has finished conversations with Simoni about renewing his contract with the team, so there have been rumors that Simoni was talking to Acqua&Sapone (which is currently co-sponsored by), which has already signed Mario Cipollini for the coming season. In order finance the expansion of the team, a new co-sponsor was also rumored to be joining. Ballan, which has already being involved in cycling sponsorship, would make the new team Acqua&Sapone-Ballan, but even that is now in doubt. Meanwhile Lampre has their eyes on the Casero brothers, Angel (who is currently second at the Vuelta and is also being courted by iBanesto and CSC-Tiscali) and Rafael.
SOCIETE TO AID ORGANIZATION: The Société du Tour de France will co-organize the Tour du Faso, which will be held in Africa from October 31 to November 11.
