Road Racing News for 9/27/01 [infociclismo]+ LA VUELTA A ESPAÑA

STAGE 18: Italian Filippo Simeoni (Cantina Tollo), had time to ceremoniously get off his bike, lift his bike above his head and walk into the finish line. Simeoni was the most cunning of a group of 12 riders who escaped the peloton from km 68. This group included riders like Erik Zabel, Rafael Diaz Justo (ONCE), Haimar Zubeldia (Euskaltel) and Santiago Blanco (iBanesto.com). Regretfully, Blanco fell on the descent of Alto del Castillo, with 12 kms to go. Right at that moment, Simeoni leaped out of the breakaway group and managed to open a big enough gap to be able to salute the fans in his unorthodox way.

Simeoni commented after his win: "I have a love-hate relationship with cycling and I needed to make this gesture to release myself. This is a sport where you suffer a lot, but you acquire important values and it forges your character. I think a lot about cycling and sports. Enough wars, one can fight for things in life, but in a sporting way", explained the "philosopher". Sevilla held on to the Golden Jersey for one more day without any difficulties.

VUELTA NEWS

US POSTAL'S DIRECTOR BRUYNEEL

The US Postal's sport director, Johan Bruyneel, spoke about the performance of his team in yesterday's stage 17. "We have shown that the US Postal is not only Armstrong. We have seen our team in the mountains and the two times that the race has split in the flat stages, we have been the deciding factor". Bruyneel feels that Roberto Heras doesn't have a lot of possibilities of taking the Golden Jersey from Oscar Sevilla or Angel Casero. "It would be quite complicated to win. Casero
or Sevilla could have a bad day, but not both. Heras is paying for a the first week when he wasn't at 100%".
