| 09/28/2001 | Chris Eatough (TREK/Volks) Wins 24 Hours Adrenalin
Amidst the heat and dry conditions of the San Bernardino
Mountains, 47 ultra-endurance athletes and 850 outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts
rode their bikes for 24 long hours this past weekend. The World Solo 24
Hours of Adrenalin™ Championships and the 24 Hours of Adrenalin™ mountain
bike team relay wrapped up today at noon at Hurkey Creek Park in Idyllwild.
The
World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin™ Championships saw the reigning champion
successfully defend his crown against the toughest 24-hour solo field the
world has ever seen. Rishi Grewal (Klein) and Tinker Juarez (Volvo/Cannondale)
- both heavy favorites to win the championship - pushed hard early in the
race to unseat Chris Eatough (TREK/Volkswagen) of Great Britain. However,
the 104F temperatures through Saturday afternoon proved to be too much for
both of them, as they were forced to bow out early. Chris continued to battle
and ward off other challengers throughout the race, completing 22 laps of
the 10.3-mile course to retain the title. Finishing in second place, also
with 22 laps, 10 minutes behind was James Dover of the U.S., with Marcel
Knaus of Switzerland finishing third, having completed 21 laps. In the female
division, Mary Grigson (Subaru/Gary Fisher) of Australia took the championship
with 18 laps, battling last year’s champion, Katie Lindquist (Moots), the
whole race. Katie finished second with 17 laps, followed by Cristina Begy
(Independent Fabrications), also with 17 laps. For more in depth coverage
please refer to the World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin™ Championships Race
Reports throughout the entire event.
In the team categories, the 24 Hours of Adrenalin™ provided a weekend of
excitement for the 850 riders and over 2400 spectators and support staff.
An impressive performance was put in by Team Ten Tired Things – bib#552,
of Palm Desert, in the 5-person, 200+ total age category. They completed
an astounding 27-laps. Also providing much entertainment was the battle
in the corporate/10-person category. Team Mission Cyclery narrowly defeated
Team No Fear by just 10-minutes to win the category.
Prizes were awarded for the top 3 finishers in each category. First place
received custom Sugoi winners’ jerseys, second received a Platypus hydration
pack, while third took home a new set of Kenda tires. In addition, a $10
000 cash purse was awarded for the World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin™ Championships,
with the male and female solo winners taking home $1 800 each and Mavic
CrossRoc UST Tubeless wheels.
Other highlights included the weekend’s fastest lap time of 43:37, turned
in by Jeff Bicknell. He was awarded a set of Mavic CrossMax wheels for his
performance. Another award went to Team Divadrenalin of Idyllwild, for having
the Best Pit Area/Campsite. It included several couches, area rugs, bar
and dining room. They won a free entry into next year’s event for their
spirit and imagination. The kid’s 24 Minutes of Adrenalin and the Midnight
Corn Roast also added to the weekend’s festival atmosphere.
