+ LA VUELTA A ESPAÑA

STAGE 19: Italian/American Guido Trenti managed Cantina Tollo's second consecutive stage win in the 19th stage of the Vuelta 2001 disputed under the rain between Cuenca and Guadalajara. On the day before the big showdown in the Mountains that could decide this year's winner there was no repeat "performance" at the finish line, however, Trenti was certainly very excited to have overpowered his breakaway companions to score the win. Breakaway companions Mikel Zarrabeitia (ONCE Eroski), zajo Alexander Shefer, from Alessio and Chente García Acosta, from iBanesto.com, could not counter Trenti's burst of speed and followed in that order across the line.

Trenti, 28, whose mother is American, dedicated victory to his grandmother who passed away three days ago. "I will take the flowers to her grave when I go back to Italy", exclaimed Trenti. "My father called me with the news, but insisted I continue racing", added Trenti.

Stage 20: The much-anticipated showdown today, did little to settle the situation above the overall classification in this year's Vuelta as overall leader Oscar Sevilla and current runner-up Angel Casero, came across the finish line together. The win, and the day, however, belonged to 2001 Giro winner Gilberto Simoni who outsprinted Jose Maria Jimenez to the line. Simoni, who last year finished second to Roberto Heras on this same climb, allowed Jimenez to begin the sprint but came around him to score his team's third stage win of the race. Jimenez will need to be satisfied with three wins, the climber's jersey and the regularity jersey.

Simoni's intentions were clear this morning and his team worked all day to get him into position to launch himself forward for the win. Another team on a mission today was Festina, who controlled the race today and allowed no room for Sevilla to attempt to increase his lead before tomorrow's finale. Sevilla, who recently celebrated his 25th birthday wearing the golden jersey, made a couple of attempts but was unable to generate the needed acceleration to escape the Festina grip.

The Vuelta arrives Madrid tomorrow for a 38 km TT around the city that will decide this year's winner.
