| 10/09/2001 | Clif Bar Inc. announced today it is forming and title sponsoring the LUNA CHIX™ all-women's mountain bike team. The LUNA CHIX racing team will be comprised of elite professional athletes, including world-class downhill specialist Marla Streb, who will compete in World Cup and NORBA National events beginning in spring 2002. Discussions are underway with other potential team members and sponsors.
In addition to the racing team, LUNA CHIX will include the LUNA Ambassadors, a group of female mountain bike racers who will take on the role of athletic ambassador, raising awareness, funding and support for women's causes, including The Breast Cancer Fund. More details about the LUNA Ambassadors will be forthcoming in the near future.
"We're very excited about sponsoring female athletes in their quest for success at the highest levels of sport, plus supporting them on par with their male counterparts," said Gary Erickson, owner and CEO of Clif Bar Inc., which makes LUNA™, the whole nutrition bar for women™.
Equally important, Erickson said, is creating the only sponsorship program that plans to devote as much effort to women's causes as it does to racing. "We hope we'll help inspire women to seek new challenges and believe in their power," he said.
A former bike messenger who turned pro in 1993 at age 28, Streb was ranked third overall in the NORBA series for 2001. This year she won the Sea Otter Classic Downhill and the Snow Summit NORBA National at Big Bear Lake, Calif. In 2002, Streb will be one of just four athletes featured in "The Science of Speed," a new film that will be shown at IMAX theaters worldwide. She resides in San Geronimo (Marin), Calif.
Clif Bar Inc. is sponsoring nearly 400 mountain bikers in 2001. The company also continues its strong support for the sport through sponsorship of mountain bike events, including cross-country, downhill and dual slalom, plus State Cup Series and various mountain bike festivals.
