| 11/29/2001 | The Shimano Nexave Di2 component groupo will feature an automatic shifting system powered and controlled by a tiny computer and power pack attached to the bicycle's handlebars. A special derailleur that is controlled by an electric motor, a potentiometer and internal gears will move the chain. The computer will also pump air from a reservoir into the front and rear suspension systems, adjusting both on the fly. As the speed increases, the bicycle shifts to higher gears and the computer reduces the air pressure of the suspension to soften the ride.
The system will need to be installed only on specially designed bicycle frames. At this time no bicycle makers have announced plans to offer bikes based around the technology in the United States. If bicycles with the Di2 system do become available in the United States they would retail between $2,000 and $2,500.www.shimano.com
