| 12/01/2001 | Doping in athletics has been a ongoing issue. Large scandals like the 1999 Tour de France where the drug EPO was used by a team or when Ben Johnson's tested positive for steroid use after his gold medal 100 yard win during the Olympics, have made us aware of this problem. Many athletes are prepared win at any cost and have little risk to their health or reputation.
Scientists are now warning that by as early as the 2012 Olympics we may see genetically produced super-athletes in action. A conference on Friday on genes in sport warns that gene therapy could be abused to enhance performance. The International Olympic Committee is the body that tests for drug use. They are aware of the potential cheating that could be involved with gene therapy and already making plans to develop tests that would be able to detect genetically modified athletes.news.bbc.co.uk
