| 12/05/2001 | A Chicage jury convicted a man of murder Tuesday for the 1999 "road-rage" death of a cyclist Thomas McBride, 26. Carnell Fitzpatrick, 31, was accused of running over Thomas in Chicago's West Side on April 26, 1999.
McBride was a bike messenger in Chicago on his way to work during rush hour when nearly collided with Fitzpatrick’s sport-utility vehicle. Fitzpatrick rolled through the stop sign, nearly hitting McBride. McBride then slapped the hood of Fitzpatrick’s vehicle.
Instead of going straight, Fitzpatrick turned onto Washington and started following McBride. He rammed the bicycle several times until McBride fell from the bike. Fitzpatrick then ran over McBride, dragging the bicycle under his vehicle. Fitzpatrick then turned off Washington, pulled into an alley and removed the bicycle.
McBride was pronounced dead a half an hour later at Mt. Sinai hospital.
Fitzpatrick will be sentenced on January 15th. He will face between 20 and 60 years in prison.www.kcchronicle.com
