| 02/18/2002 | In his San Francisco bike shop 2 years ago, shop owner Bradley Woehl was lamenting that the big brands he carries wasn't offering bike with features he thought his customers wanted. And thus the seed for a new frame line was planted.
Since then he has teamed up with a local bike parts distributor and they dreamed up SOMA Fabrications, a line of affordable, but high quality steel frames built with an urban mentality. Frames are currently of Reynolds 631 air-hardened steel tubing offered in fixed gear, cyclocross, road and mountain models.
"These bikes represent the culmination of years of experience from discriminating cyclists and mechanics. The adaptability we have built into the frameset, every braze-on imaginable and room for wide tires and fenders makes it possible for me to spec' a bike right on the floor to meet any customer's requirements," Woehl says.
The Double Cross frame shown comes in 10 sizes, has a lugged crown fork with pannier and fender mounts, and is still light enough to race, and enduring enough to become your beater bike years down the line. Suggested retail for frame and fork: $425
Launched last summer, SOMA frames are being sold not only in Brad's own shop, but in independent bike shops across the U.S. www.somafab.com
