| 04/02/2002 | Kryptonite Corporation is supporting the 2002 Kids C.A.R.E. (Cancer Awareness and Rider Education) program with the Lance Armstrong Foundation in Austin, Texas. The Kids C.A.R.E. program was designed to educate children of elementary school age about both cancer awareness and safe cycling.
“Kryptonite is a firm believer in educating children about healthy habits and bicycle safety, which is why we have been involved with the Kids C.A.R.E. program since its inception," said Gary S. Furst, president of Kryptonite. “Through this program Kryptonite and the Lance Armstrong Foundation are teaching children good health practices and basic cycling safety that will stay with them for life."
The Kids C.A.R.E. program has a curriculum of several lessons that students need to complete with their classes about cancer awareness and bike safety. Kids not living in Austin, but attending the weekend with their parents, can complete the programs on the internet and submit completed forms to the Foundation. When they have successfully completed the lessons, the kids are eligible to ride on a 1-mile closed course with Lance Armstrong, three-time winner of the Tour de France, on Saturday, April 13, in Austin.
Kryptonite not only supports the event with a monetary contribution, but the company was involved with providing safety tips and information during the creation of the curriculum. The company provided each student with a proper lock up brochure and discount coupon for a Kryptonite lock to help protect their bicycle. The company is also donating one of its limited edition USA Locks for the Live to Ride Gala and the new EZ Touch Combination Locks for the VIP bags.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation’s Ride for the Roses is a weekend of activities in Austin to raise funds to support cancer awareness programs. More than 7,000 participants from all over the country will be participating in the weekend long event. In excess of $1.5 million was successfully raised through this weekend in 2001, to fund the Foundations cancer survivorship programs and services.
Kryptonite’s annual lock promotion is in progress for the third year with select Austin bicycle dealers. A percentage of the retail price of any Kryptonite lock sold in these stores in the month of April will be donated to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Each person buying a Kryptonite lock will also receive a commemorative event poster as a gift while supplies last. The 2002 poster depicts Lance Armstrong in competing in a mountain stage looking over his shoulder. The promotion is in effect Monday, April 1, 2002, through Tuesday, April 31, 2002.
