| 04/24/2002 | The LUNA Ambassadors, a group of women mountain bike riders in Boulder, Colo., and Berkeley, Calif., will hold a Silent Auction and Benefit party in July to raise awareness and dollars for The Breast Cancer Fund, a non-profit organization working to uncover and eliminate the preventable causes of breast cancer, particularly those in the environment.
The pro-athlete cocktail party and silent auction will take place in Telluride, Colo., on Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m. during the inaugural 360 Adventure Festival, a multi-sport competition involving a Primal Quest Adventure Race and World Cup Downhill Mountain bike race along with other challenging outdoor events. More than 750 people are expected to attend the fundraiser, which will feature some of the most prominent names in mountain biking and adventure racing who will be on hand to compete in the Adventure Festival.
The LUNA Ambassadors are part of the LUNA Women's Mountain Bike Team (a.k.a. LUNA Chix), which is headlined by a sterling all-women's professional mountain bike team that includes cross country world champion Alison Dunlap of Colorado Springs and world class downhill specialist Marla Streb. The LUNA Ambassadors raise awareness, funding and support for women's causes such as breast cancer, and promote women's participation in mountain biking through fundraisers, clinics and rides.
"Breast cancer is the No. 1 killer of women ages 25 to 55," said Rhonda Swenson, a LUNA Ambassador in Boulder and coordinator of the Telluride benefit party. "We hope to make women more aware of the options available to help prevent this terrible disease. We also want to encourage more women to participate in mountain biking, which is a great way for them to contribute to their overall health and fitness."
