IMBA Assists in Olympic MTB Design in Athens

04/03/2001
IMBA Assists in Olympic MTB Design in AthensIMBA is providing technical design assistance on the 2004 Olympics mountain bike course in Athens, Greece. Joey Klein of Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew No. 2 spent a week in Athens in early February, working as an environmental consultant to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in cooperation with the Athens Olympic Organizing Committee (ATHOC).

Klein worked with UCI technical delegate Martin Whiteley and Vladimiros Petsas, the competition manager of cycling for ATHOC. The focus was on selecting an Olympic mountain bike race course site that is environmentally sound, provides spectators with reasonable access, and serves as a challenging test of skill for Olympic racers.

IMBA executive director Tim Blumenthal said, "The opportunity to play a role in site selection and course design for the Olympic mountain bike race is not only important work, but a significant honor for IMBA. We're grateful that the UCI called on us to provide assistance."

The 2004 Olympic mountain bike race course site will not be finalized and announced until a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment is completed.

Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew No. 1, Mike and Jan Riter, helped maintain the '96 mountain bike course in Conyers, Georgia.
