| 09/11/2002 | Bontrager's new line of Race X Lite ATB wheels have proven their raceability with first-place finishes in the World Championships and the World Cup Final. The Race X Lites, which are new to Bontrager for 2003, are created from ZR9000 aluminum, a proprietary alloy that gives 20% added impact strength. Additionally, the wheelset features the Radial Ridge machining process which removes weight while it maintains radial rigidity and fatigue life.
The new wheelsystem was ridden to victory by Roland Green in his repeat in the World Championships in Kaprun, Austria. The race was held in treacherous conditions, with thick mud and slippery rocks throughout the 4.5 lap course. Green rode the Race X Lites fearlessly through the course's treacherous climbs and descents to take his second rainbow jersey in a row. Green, who also rode Bontrager wheels in the 2001 race, became only the second man to repeat as World Champion.
Green later put the scope of the race in perspective: "That's the best race I ever had. The race conditions were so hard."
Ryder Hesjedal also rode Race X Lites to a stunning victory in the final race of the World Cup series in Les Gets, France. Hesjedal's win, his first in the World Cup series, came despite heavy rains the night before and constant attacks by the series leader. In the end, not even a double team attack by Christoph Sauser and Kashi Leuchs on the last lap could stop Hesjedal on his new Bontrager wheels.
In addition to being built for speed and strength, the new wheelset gives the option to utilize either tubeless tires or standard tubes and tires. The rear rim's Offset Spoke Bed enhances the wheel's performance as it minimizes dish and maximizes the wheels strength. The wheelset features Swiss-made hubs and weighs a paltry 630g front/810g rear.www.bontrager.com
