Shimano:
Field Test
Shimano is very interested on what cyclists think
about existing products and what type of products that they feel would be
useful and not yet produced by any manufacturer.
Sometimes it is very difficult for manufacturers
to get in touch with the thoughts of their potential clients, so Shimano
has taken a radical decision to have a reliable view of the direction which
the market should move.
A group of engineers will visit Bicycle shops from Japan, U.S.A. and Europe,
to see what are the likes and dislikes of bike riders about existing products.
They will also take a look to the problems that their customers have had
when they use their bicycles. The staff of each shop visited will be talked
with to determin which are the most common troubles they have with the bikes
they repair, which items are the best selling, and which items have no demand
from customers and why.
This is not the first time that Shimano has moved their engineers into the
battle field: In the eighties, when they developed SIS, employees from the
Japanese company helped bicycle mechanics at the shops and the racers to
comprehend all the secrets about indexed systems.
The next time you enter a shop, maybe you will find one of these engineers.
