| 10/10/2002 | LAS VEGAS, Oct. 10, 2002 - Clif Bar Inc. presented Roberto Heras of the U.S. Postal Service Pro Cycling Team with a $10,000 check as the winner of the first annual Beyond The Podium Award™. Heras, who also received $5,000 from Clif Bar Inc. to donate to the charity of his choice—he chose Trips for Kids—was honored during a jam-packed ceremony at the 2002 Interbike International Bicycle Expo.
The Beyond the Podium Award is a tribute to the domestiques—the unsung heroes of cycling-who played critical roles in the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) team's fourth consecutive win of a yellow jersey at this year's Tour de France. Nearly 12,000 cycling enthusiasts nationwide cast online (www.clifbar.com) and mail-in votes for the Beyond the Podium Award, choosing among the eight USPS domestiques in the Tour.
USPS domestique Floyd Landis captured second place in the fan voting, earning him a $4,000 award from Clif Bar Inc. Teammate George Hincapie finished third in the balloting and received a $2,000 award from the company. Landis and Hincapie joined Heras in receiving their awards at Interbike from Clif Bar Inc. owner and CEO Gary Erickson.www.cliffbar.com
