| 01/27/2003 | What is the Commuter Challenge? The National Commuter Challenge is an exciting and fun way to promote healthy lifestyles, build strong workplace teams, and maintain a healthy environment through the use of sustainable transportation. Every year on Clean Air Day (first Wednesday of June) during National Environment Week, BEST coordinates the Commuter Challenge in the Lower Mainland, joining over 30 other participating communities across Canada. The goals of the event are to have fun, raise awareness of sustainable transportation options, and encourage people to try an alternative to the single occupancy vehicle.
We recognize that it isn’t always possible to walk, bike, take transit or carpool to work, but every little bit helps! By leaving our single occupancy vehicles at home once a week we can all reduce our personal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions by almost 1 tonne per year! Using sustainable transportation – even once a week - will make a significant positive impact on our air quality. And it’s an easy way to meet the federal government’s personal climate change challenge of reducing our average individual emissions from 5 tonnes per year to 4 tonnes.
How can I participate? Participating is easy. The first step is to get your company to sign up! Fill in the registration form and send it in to BEST. We’ll register you in our database and keep you informed of upcoming Commuter Challenge events, such as the kick-off breakfast and our planning seminar in April, provide you with promotional tools and a package of prizes you can use to encourage individual participation at your workplace.www.best.bc.ca
