| 03/15/2003 | The Arlington County Board today approved two items that will significantly expand the Arlington Bicycle Transportation Plan by adding new bike lanes, on-street routes, trails, and off-street facilities.
“Bicycles are an important component of the County’s total transportation plan," commented Paul Ferguson, Chairman of the Arlington County Board. “It’s all part of our County’s commitment to the environment, to smart growth, and to safe and attractive neighborhoods."
Currently, the County’s bikeway system includes 36 miles of paved, shared-use trails, 12 miles of bicycle lanes and 38 miles of signed, shared roadways. With today’s actions, the Board has approved expansion of an additional 5 miles of paved, shared-use trails and 10 miles of bicycle lanes.
Arlington County has received numerous national and regional awards for being one of the most bicycle-friendly jurisdictions in the country. At its upcoming 30th Anniversary meeting on April 3rd, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association will honor Arlington County with a WABA Award for its leadership in the region to create a bicycle-friendly environment.
