![]() 28 Days Behind Bars Average Rating: 5.0 Total Reviews: 22 More Information What a trip!!! Reading this book was like driving by a car wreck - you know you probably shouldnt keep looking, but somehow you just cant stop. First the good stuff: Harold can ride. Bigtime mileage. Everyday. He also appreciates nature and doesnt let things like wind & rain bother him too much. Now the downside: while the guy claims to work in a missile factory, hes no rocket scientist. Heavy drinking, fast food gluttony, lechery, and latent bigotry were all mildly amusing if somewhat annoying, but his ignorance of bike mechanics was just plain hysterical. I definitely admire the guy for his feat, and I admit the book was entertaining in a Jerry Springer kind of way, but if this guy can sell a book for $23.95, in the words of Al Pacino,"Somethins really wrong here!" A FUN BOOK TO READ! I thoroughtly enjoyed reading 28 Days Behind Bars. Wagoner knows how to bring things to life with words. It was as though I were right there with him throughout his tour. Not that great. I found this book disappointing, especially after reading the rave reviews of others. This book tells the story of Harold Wagoners bike ride from Seattle to New York. While I admire him for the adventure, most of the book is just reporting mileage, temperature, and meals. It is more a log book/journal than a travel story. We see little insight or growth from the author as he makes the trip and when it is offered, it is all Archie Bunker and bumper sticker slogans. By the end of the book, I was ready for the trip to be over. I gather this book is published through the modern day version of a vanity press. There were some enjoyable moments and the author has writing talent. But jarring typos, punctuation errors, and spell check errors like using "theyre" for "there" reduce the enjoyment. He could have benefitted tremendously from the help of a good editor. I dont think this book was worth the price. A EXCELLENT BOOK! I have just finished reading Wagoners book and I LOVED IT! It is the best bicycle touring book Ive ever read. It really is a first rate adventure. A must read for every cyclist. Will Rogers on wheels! Bravo to Harold Wagoner for both an amazing feat and a great story. A must read for any touring cyclist or for anyone interested in the triumph of the human spirit. Wagoner details his 28 day ride from Seattle to NYC dispensing self-deprecating humor and homespun wisdom along the way. Wheel wobbles, headwinds, tailwinds, crosswinds, bears and bees cant stop him, nor can the roadside Sirens he encounters along the way. His eating habits provide an instant cure for anyone concerned about their diet. A heart-warming and life-affirming tale, well told. Down home humor Harolds descriptive writing made me feel I was riding with him every day. His "down home" humor reminded me of my childhood. Awesome Book! A friend bought me this book because I am interested in bicycle touring. Reading it was a real experience-and I mean real, not created. Wagoners mile by mile narration makes the ride (and the book) as realistic as if I was doing it myself. I am a author 28 Days Behind Bars is an extremely good book. Wagoner has taken a lot of time to write his book, and it shows. A striking book. I found this an easy to read book about something I wish I had the guts to undertake. I like Wagoners technique of narrating the mile by mile and his impressions of the local people. I admire him for making the tour and also for writing the book. "28 Days Behind Bars" is a remarkable read. The author of this book is real. Not some physically fit fitness fanatic. He is an ordinory man, who not only likes his handlebars but also the local taverns (bars). This adds a colorful touch to a book about a solo bicycle tour. Fantastic! Im rarin to go. The emphasis of Wagoners book is on fun and adventure. It makes me want to get on my bike and go. An Excellent read. Wagoners book gave me the kick-in-the-...[butt] I needed to get out there and ride. It gives me hope that Ill someday take the bicycle trek of my dreams. Entertaining read and ride. This is one of my favorite cycling books. "28 Days Behind Bars" is a must read for every cyclist. Its a story youll remember forever. Everything you need to know. Wagoners book tells it all. From the planning to what to pack, to what route to take, to the flight home. Its a well organized and detailed guide book. Inspirational This book has inspired me to do a cross-country bicycle tour. If a 46 year old, overweight man who obviously enjoys his beer can do it, Im sure I can. Thanks to Harold Ill find out in June. A Must Read! A humorous, must read, bicycle tour for anyone interested in bicycling. I found this book to be fun as well as helpful in planning my tour, which I plan on taking this summer. An impressive book. If anyone is interested in bicycle touring this book will give you all the details. From all the preparatory steps, through the actual tour, to the concluding issues and logistics of getting home again. Wonderful! by: Anonymous On: 2001-12-11 This book tells the story of a man who rode his bicycle across the northern route of the U.S.,from Seattle to New York City. But it tells more. We are included in reminiscences of the authors early farm life as well as his apprection of nature. His narration takes us with him into headwinds, up incredible grades, and down hills with rewarding tailwinds. What comes out overall is this mans love of like and his country. Much Humor! I found Wagoners book to be a fun book to read. A remarkable accomplishment by: Anonymous On: 2001-12-11 This book gives you all the various feelings, thoughts and struggles of a lone bicyclist on a 3200 mile bicycle tour. The author engenders a respect for nature and of a time when automobiles and such were not so invasive. I enjoyed the wry sense of humor and the narration, especially on those days filled with headwinds. A Magnificent Book. I was concerned about the price of Wagoners book, until I read it. Its worth every penny. I read it for enjoyment the first time. The second time I followed along with a road atlas. Now I use it as a reference book, almost daily. Its definitely a must read book for everyone who rides bicycle. Fun by: Anonymous On: 2001-12-09 I was able to take a bike tour, vicariously, and enjoyed doing it. |
