![]() Bicycle Repair Manual Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 19 More Information Tell me the What, but don't tell me the How Its nice to see that Mr. Sidwells has so many friends to write down glowing reviews for his book. As a prior reviewer stated, this book will only tell you the What, not the How. You need the How or youre going nowhere. Save your money and go on Youtube; there are qualified people who have created video tutorials during their lunch break that will answer your questions. This book is going in the recycle bin as we speak. Great Book! Easy to understand, learns bicycle basics and helps to care about it for the weekend rider and also to the daily training competitor. Perfect for the Home Bike Mechanic I have worked on bikes at my house for over 25 years and this manual is PERFECT for the home mechanic. The photos and RIGHT TO THE POINT details will help get you back on the road or trail. I live in Arizona and prefer to fix my bike at home vs. back and forth to the shop. I still take my bikes to the shop for an Annual Cleaning and Tune Up. I do this for safety reasons and to check out new bikes. Keep on Biking! OK book, but title is a bit off Just got "spammed" by Amazon to write a review, so here we go: Content: This book gives you an overview of most parts of the bike, with the most common variations on a part (usually mountainbike, road bike and hybrid or BMX). It is not exhaustive and not entirely up to date, but it will give you an idea of how a bike works. It is NOT a "repair" manual, it is however a "bike parts for dummies" book and a bit of basic maintenance. What it did for me: I did not know much about bikes before the weekend, today I walked into a store and ordered an entire bike part by part. The book allowed me to understand the basics, the internet filled me in on the specifics. In short: if you already know what a bottom bracket, a V-brake and a crankset is and if you can tell apart a threaded headset from an unthreaded, stay away from this book. If not, and you dont want to look stupid on your next visit to the bikeshop, lay out the 11 bucks. It will also help you a bit on basic maintenance, but not on repairs. 3 stars because its good value. Covers the Basics The manual is good on the the basics. It explains in clear steps with helpful photos. I would buy again. Bike Repair Made Easy. Excellent starting place to learn about basic bicycle repair. Good pictures and easy to follow instructions. Tops marks for graphics, organization, editing, comprehensive by: porkch0p On: 2006-08-20 With over 159 glossy colored pages, this handy manual for bicycles covering everything that is new upto 2006, such as Shimano Deore derailleurs, MTB, hybrids, front suspensions, hubs, wheels, pedal, and more ......is extremely well priced for the information contained. Of course, the books brevity, and size (handbook size) is intended more for bicycle store management and sales people, who need to understand the workings, part names, bike styles, and overall mechanics to be able to do their jobs. Indeed, if someone doesnt know the proper name of parts, how can they function ? e.g. chainring, crank arm, cassette, freehub, wheel jig, etc. It also compares different types of brakes (v brakes, disk, etc.) and gives their pros and cons, and explains the principles underlying their functionality. Some specific mechanic repairs or adjustments are well explained, such as optimizing the spokes and rims, headsets, and also provides advice to ride safely. Overall, as said, worth the investment. However, if you really need step by step, detailed walk thus of disassembly and reassembly of parts, and work as a mechanic, I suggest looking elsewhere, as you are not a novice. Newbie Needing Help As a kid growing up, I rode bikes all the time. However, when I received my drivers license, I put the bikes away. Some 25 years later I decided to ride again. I bought a new bike and it wasnt long before it needed a little maintenance. Instead of carrying it to the bike shop, I bought this book. It more than paid for itself with the first tuning of my rear derailleur. Since then, Ive made adjustments to the front derailleur and rear brakes. Im sure I could have found this info on the net. But, its really handy to just be able to pick up this reference book and find what you need. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to maintain their own bike. Very clear and precise This book is a great little gem. It is extremely readable and provides just enough information to get the job done without overwhelming the reader with an excessive amount of information. The pictures are well done and there is always exact information about what tools you will need. I would recommend this for people starting out on bicycle maintenance and routine repairs/fixes. If you want a more detailed book, you should check out "The Bicycling Guide to Complete Bicycle Maintenance and Repair" by Todd Downs. I found it much more readable than "Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance". It does the job, but I want more. I am used to fixing my bike, so I know a lot of the stuff in this book, so I want a more extensive piece. It does the job for a introduction level book, but if you are a mature bike repairer or just want a more extensive piece go somewhere else. Beautifully-Ilustrustrated but Overly-Simplified Like all of publisher DKs books, this one is very beautifully-illustrated and very reasonably-priced. Its suitable for a teenager or an adult just getting back into cycling. Its also small enough to fit in some saddle bags. However, its not detailed enough for semi-pro or pro bicycle mechanics, who will certainly continue to use Barnetts Manual. The index of Sidwells book is OK, but the glossary is far too brief. Overall, the book is better for amateurs than other such books, but just not detailed enough for really serious work. This one worked for me. I have looked at just about every bike repair/maintenance book out there. I dont like any of them. Either they are too vague and basically are advertisements for professional repairs or they are outdated even in the latest editions. Or, worse yet, expensive advertisements for tools and gimicks. The Bicycle Repair Manual is really all anybody needs. If you need much more than this then you are repairing junk which should be replaced. This manual allowed me, in the space of just a few hours, to go from knowing nothing about derailleurs to completely removing, reinstalling, and perfectly adjusting the gear system on an old bike I bought at a garage sale for a few bucks. It now operates better than some I could spend a couple of hundred times as much on. And all because of this book. I cannot think of a better recommendation to give a book of this kind. The only thing it lacks is wheel building, gear tables, and information on fancy mods. Wonderful help I have been able to take apart and repair all of the childrens bikes. I has saved us a bundle as we have eight. At $40 a bike plus parts I have repaired and rebuild for the time and cost of parts and my children have learned to do for them selves as well. Its a great book to have. Bike Repair Thank you Thank you!! Short and sweet! Im a rookie to off road riding, and this book gave me a great understanding of whats happening between my legs! I can now fix a flat w/out help! YEA!!! Hey for $... this book is the one to get. A waste of money I think that these guys work for Microsoft! Just like Microsoft help systems they are very good at telling you the What and not the How. Lots of pictures of stuff, not much detail on what to do with that information however. Essential Information for Greater Biking Enjoyment! Reading this book made me want to go out and buy new bikes for the whole family! Theres nothing quite like the pleasure of riding out of a beautiful bike showroom on a great bicycle! Yet within months, I always noticed that the feel was gone. Pretty soon, I wasnt riding as much. Now from reading this book, I know that all bikes need regular maintenance to keep that top-performance feeling. And I know what to do. Its a wonder that my bikes and my childrens bikes ran at all before reading this book! My idea of bike repair was to patch a puncture, adjust the seat and handle bars, and get a new chain if it broke. Thats about 3 percent of what you really need to know. The book is also useful as a guide to what type of bike to buy in the first place. The pros and cons of various types of materials and structures are well developed. For those who enjoy mastering physical tasks, this book also offers much potential pleasure. "Keeping your bike in tip-top shape is very satisfying -- and makes riding more enjoyable." Although I am far from being a mechanical person, I could clearly do everything in the book. But I do need different tools. No problem! The book shows you just what to buy, with many choices (more kinds of bike stands than you ever knew existed, as an example). Not only that, it tells you which ones to take with you on a long touring ride. If you dont have the right tool, it shows you how to improvise with materials usually found along the side of any road. This was fascinating! In fact, the paperback is just the right size to take along on a ride, so you can figure out what to do if you bend a rim. One of the real insights for me was to realize that all of the bearings are meant to be rebuilt once a year. And there are a lot of bearings on any bike. Where a bike might have different types of equipment (such as for brakes and transmissions), you get descriptions of what to do with all the major types. Many pictures show you what each part looks like, and the steps to go through for maintenance. This is the main drawback of such a compact book. Some of the images can be a little small. But I see no way around that if you are to have a truly portable guide to repair and maintenance. Most people will decide to still get some maintenance and repair at the local bike shop. But this book can show you whats involved so you can figure out what it might cost in time and money to do the work yourself. One of my favorite parts of the book was the Troubleshooting Chart to give you an idea from the symptom you have observed what is a likely cause, the solution, and where the information is found to implement that solution. I suggest that you both get this book and try doing some of the maintenance. If you enjoy this, it could become a very satisfying hobby. You could also do maintenance for other people to help cover the cost of the tools. I suspect that less than 1 bike in 50 is properly maintained. If you have children who like to learn to fix and maintain things, this could be a fun family activity. My dad was very good at such things when I was a wee lad, so good that I never learned how to fix anything. Be sure to pass along what you know and learn instead. But whatever you do, be sure you get out and enjoy biking with loved ones! Thats the ultimate payoff. A comprehensive guide recommended for all cyclists. by: Anonymous On: 1998-11-27 Richards Bicycle Repair Manual can be read in two ways. 1.As a manual for repairing and mainaining a modern bicycle and 2.As a sensual coffee-table type of book which is a pleasure to pour over. For this reason, planning some bike maintenance becomes an enjoyable process from the beginning. The graphic design and layout is faultless, pictures are sharp and charts clear. Anyone interested in bicycles is guaranteed to dribble over the close-up of the Campagnola rear cluster! The book is in a category of its own, comparable to sensual glossy recipe books yet comprehensive. I recommend it to anyone interested in keeping their bike in top shape or simply becoming familiar with the workings of a bicycle. It could never be described as dry or dull. great pictures and proceedures, lacking in new features by: Anonymous On: 1998-01-25 The book is well thought out, well illustrated, and very entertaining for all levels of bike enthusiasists. It did not cover A-heads or V-brakes showing little about anything out in the last 5 years. For an overall view of bike repair it is wonderful, for a techinical manual on new equipment and their repair is is seriously lacking. great pictures and proceedures, lacking in new features The book is well thought out, well illustrated, and very entertaining for all levels of bike enthusiasists.
