Great source but dated and more for expert riders than beginners     On: 2006-01-08

I bought this book and its companion, "50 choice single-tracks: A guide to mid-valley mountain bike trails" when they were published in 1990 and 1992. These are excellent guides to trails within about three ours of Portland (this book) and Corvallis and Eugene (the companion). Each describes 50 trails with details including directions to the trailheads, USGS map numbers, Forest Service contact numbers, and elevation plots. The author has clearly ridden each trail and his personal notes add a touch of fun and expectation. He notes the frequency of hazards on each trail (e.g., risks of falling off of cliffs) and gives each an overall rating of beginner, intermediate, advanced, or absurd. Unfortunately many of the trails are rated advanced or absurd so beginners should look for other sources for trails. The book is dated and an updated version would be welcome.
