Inner strife and self hatred are the worst enemies
by: wuivre_eternelle    On: 2007-07-23

This film shows the real crossroads where the Blacks are in America, and I say the Blacks because they call themselves Blacks and not Afro-Americans or African Americans. The mother is dead, killed accidentally in a temper but the father. The father is in prison for a very long time. The son hates his father and has to learn how to get over his hatred. The daughter is missing her father but her brother is isolating her. The uncle and aunt only see the money the son represents. He is a high school star in basketball and he can get directly into making a lot of money if he joins the NBA or he can go to some university and have a scholarship. One more tricky element: the governor wants the kid for the team of his university, the one he sponsors and likes. So why not use the father, give him a week of semi freedom and force him thus to negotiate his sons signing the right papers. Whats more the basketball star is invited by some schools to come and visit and there he is provided with everything he may desire, including the girls and the useless other entertainments. The NBA is offering a car to the uncle, though in fact it is for the son to run it. And the high school coach is able to put ten thousand dollars on the table for him to join, guess what, the NBA of course. Immoral. The film is saved from this muddy marshlandish country by the son choosing the only moral solution, the one that will help his father to get out faster, the one that is going to cure him from his hatred, even if that is slightly idealistic, frankly utopian.

Lee Got Game     On: 2007-07-07

"He Got Game" is another solid outing for director Spike Lee. He paints a realistic picture of life for a inner city basketball phenom and its many demands and pressures. Ray Allen isnt as proficient an actor as he is a shooting guard, yet his performance works here. Denzel Washington and a supporting cast of Lee film veterans deliver in their roles, making up for any inexperience Allen has. Washington is impressive as Allens father, a convicted felon who is given a short work release to try to convince his star son to attend the governeors alma mater. Revisiting this film about 9 years after its release, I still feel entertained and connected with the main characters. I feel it stands as a triumph for Lee and a good tale of basketball, exploitation, wounded family relations, and redemption (in a way).

Wish I saw it in the theater     On: 2007-06-12

I actually caught this on television when I was flipping channels one day. I didnt even plan on sticking around but this movie kept me watching. The reason why I didnt give it a chance in the theater was because I was growing weary of Spike Lees style of film making. I thought Id give it a break and I didnt know anyone else who actually saw this to endorse it. Watching it on tv meant that it was censored so I rented the original version and liked it even more. Denzel is awesome as usual, but the story itself and the trials of the main characters were thought-provoking and interesting. I know a lot of fathers like the one in this film who pushed their child hard. The son ended up living up to his potential so I guess it felt justified. I wouldve liked this film even if was a sport I didnt like. This is definitely worth a look.
Excellent Hip Hop Soundtrack to Spike Lee film!     On: 2007-06-04

He Got Game--
"He Got Game" is the hip-hop music soundtrack album to the Spike Lee-directed, Denzel Washington-starring film. It is the first movie soundtrack to feature one rap act exclusively--in this case, genre pioneers Public Enemy. The first Public Enemy album in four years (since 1994s Muse Sick N Hour Mess Age), what is also notable about the album is that members of Public Enemys founding producers, the Bomb Squad, return to oversee several tracks. The concept album explores the dark side of professional basketball culture and its toll on the largely African-American players in its ranks: The pressure from family, friends and especially big-business interests, leading to what Chuck D calls "a house built off of them skulls and bones" in "House of the Rising Son". The title track is a great meld of hip-hop & classic rock: it samples Buffalo Springfields "For What its Worth" and features a guest spot from Stephen Stills himself. Some of the other great songs include "Go Cat Go!" (produced by Meat Beat Manifestos Jack Dangers), "Game Face" (which hijacks Monty Normans James Bond theme), "Unstoppable" (with guest vocalist KRS-One) and the gospel-style hook of "What You Need is Jesus". Flavor Flavs bouncy spotlight track is the self-explanatory "Shake Your Booty". The closing track is the spoken-word piece "Game Over", where Professor Griff muses on behalf of the frequently-criticized `hip-hop ballplayer: "Yeah, I got an attitude; Howd you figure?"

Denzel shines, Ray Allen aint bad either...............     On: 2007-01-01

This is one of Denzels best performances as a loser father who accidentally kills his wife. His only hope for parole is to get his high school senior, star basketball player son to attend the college alma mater of one of the dudes that sits on his parole board. Great story that shows the greed in peoples eyes and hearts when money is involved.

denzel deserved his recognition for best actor he plays a prison bird responsible for killing his loving wife because he was pushing his son too hard practicing basketball in this film i first i thought this would be an usual basketfall film but i was totally wrong while it was a basketball film it was much bigger than that alot of things was going on in the movie meaning different issues what i like about this movie is that students hs or college who play in sports might be able to relate more than those who are non student athletes or to the parents who may give their children extra coach when they dont have to go to practice for whatever sport it maybe might relate to this movie a bit more than parents who might not coach their kids much he got game was about life decisions and what the consequences would be good or bad with whatever decision that is being made he got game was barely boring easy to understand most people will get nearly all the messages that is being sent trust me when i say so the movie is very emotional but has a small mixture of comedy and high flying action basketball move spike lee should me and the millions who watched this film why he is one of the best directors and producers of all time
Terrible     On: 2006-05-21

Do not waste your money purchasing this movie. Wait until it shows on TV, if youre unlucky enough to see it. The music for the story was inappropriate and totally threw off the entire story. Instead of following the story my husband and I kept concentrating on the terrible music. Dont waste your money.

Exceptional Performance by Denzel Washington     On: 2005-12-07

Spike Lee is such a talented filmmaker, one wonders why he took such
a fine script, marvelous cinemotography, thematic complexity and consistently fine performances -- then perforated everything with gratuitous sex.

Certainly, professional scouts lure college athletes with excess, but the manner in which Lee drops sex into the action here limits the audience for an otherwise outstanding film and interrupts the emotional resonance its characters evoke.

The film recounts a convicted fathers effort to free himself from prison for accidently killing his wife. He does so by trying to persuade his son, a gifted basketball player,to attend the governors university, "Big State," because governor is a fan.

The film has layers of plot and meaning woven together seamlessly. There is a fathers effort to redeem himself in his sons eyes , to do penance in memory of his beloved wife. In all, Lee recounts the process of forgiveness with compassion and accuracy.

Beneath these layers, Lee explores the Faustian drama of professional athletics in a corrupt society. He exposes the manner in which business corporations and big education elevate athletic talent for their selfish ends, often asting aside decency and ethical sensibility.

The score, combining the music of Aaron Copland and Public Enemy, is oddly moving, without a trace of affectation.

Gratuitous sex aside -- this film confirms Spike Lee as one of our most moral filmmakers. While his output is inconsistent, his great films are just that. They are permanent and well-crafted, ethically sound and constructive.

In his role as Jake, Denzel Washington turns out one of his greatest performances. Whether embroiled in violence or tenderness, there is a depth and vision to this actor that is rare and wonderful.

Recommended for mature audiences.
Not on the level of Spike's other works, but still good     On: 2005-09-25

I love Denzel Washington. I mean, I absolutely adore this man...he never gives a less than credible performance in any role he plays. This is more than a story about basketball - its about human relationships, the bond between a father and son, and how that prevails even in the worst of circumstances.

The story, set in the Coney Island housing projects in Brooklyn, NY (where it was also filmed), surrounds Jake Shuttlesworth (Denzel) who has been imprisoned in Attica for the accidental murder of his wife. His son, Jesus (Ray Allen), a high school basketball star who is being hotly pursued to either go into college or sign with the NBA, has nothing but contempt and disgust for his father. If Jake can convince his estranged son to attend a certain university and sign a letter of intent, then his time will be reduced significantly, since this school also happens to be the governors alma mater.

It starts off with a lot of promise, when Jake is allowed out of prison for a week to try to talk to his son. But after a while, the plot starts to wear thin when Jake keeps approaching Jesus, and Jesus is always telling Jake to leave him alone. How long can this be stretched out before you get tired of the whole thing? Okay, you can throw in flashbacks of Jesus as a child and how his father pushed him hard to play ball; a scheming, opportunistic girlfriend (Rosario Dawson); money-hungry friends and relatives; and plenty of tempting offers to either take money, sign with the NBA, go to this college and so forth to thicken the plot. Everyone seems to want something from Jesus, and as a result he has very little trust for anyone around him, and understandably so. But even that tends to get monotonous because you keep hearing the same type of dialogue, only from different characters. But stay with it.

This movie does show realistic situations that face talented high-school prospects that can play basketball, so Spike was on point with this. However, it is not the first film that touched upon this subject. There was also "Blue Chips" that had Shaquille ONeal and Anfernee (Penny) Hardaway in it as students/basketball players being heavily recruited for colleges and how they were being paid off, depending on what their decision would be. (At the time this movie was out, both Shaq and Penny were members of the Orlando Magic.)

Ray Allen is an NBA basketball player in real life, but he is NO ACTOR, just like Shaq and Penny arent actors, either. Whatever scenes Allen appeared in were painful to watch because the man just has no skills in that area. And the rest of the cast arent much better, most notably Milla Jovovich. She plays a grimy and pathetic prostitute that I find difficult to believe that Denzel or any man would find to be desirable. But then again, Denzel as Jake was just coming out of prison, so...

I also disliked the fact that Spike had to throw in so many sex scenes. I normally enjoy Spikes films, but why must he exploit women? He makes them look like they are nothing more than lowlife sexual playthings who are out to use men for what they have. "He Got Game" runs rampant with this, even casting porn star Heather Hunter in one of many (unnecessary) sex scenes! What the hell?! Although Spike does it on a smaller scale in his other movies, and always has, it didnt bother me as much as it did in this film. It was excessive. I understand the point that Spike was trying to make, but come on - couldnt he leave a little SOMETHING to the imagination?

"He Got Game" is definitely worth watching. Not perfect, but not a waste of time, either. See it!
Poetry in virtual motion     On: 2005-09-13

Aside from poor urbanized musical peculiarities (the melodramatic score, mostly), this film had promise coming into the beginning. In addition to my deficient interest in basketball, Id be lying if I said this picture didnt test my patience; furthermore, if it hadnt been for Denzel Washingtons performance as seemingly invincible Jake Shuttlesworth, I would have been lost under Spike Lees [director] tedious filmmaking.
Backtracking, my issue with the score is basically its dire need for authenticity; the central scenes with the college decision / flashback moments fail miserably. In point of fact, a lot of the continual redundancy (musically speaking) that occurs reminds me of films like "Gone With the Wind" or "Tombstone," on top of which only totaling the humor that "Gone With the Wind" is mentioned near halfway through, I believe, when a pimp is beating down his "ho," who is so inadequately played by recent "Resident Evil" goddess, Milla Jovovich, while Washington inhabits the hotel room next to him and can hear everything thats happening.

Disregarding that, and, of course, Ray Allens [Jesus Shuttlesworth] act as newly-released Jake Shuttlesworths son, I somewhat enjoyed this melo-religiously-nuance -drama. The true plot focuses around Jake, who has been in jail for six years for the "accidental" murder of his wife, getting a shot at freedom if he can convince his high-school basketball star son to sign on with a specific college. Subsequent characters and themes ruin what could have been a comparative masterpiece, but regardless, Denzel Washington is phenomenal.
In reference to Allens ghastly presentation - Ray Allen plays himself playing Jesus Shuttlesworth, the son of convict Jake Shuttlesworth (Washington), and additionally affixes his name to the NBA movie stars who utterly blow up onscreen, alongside with Michael Jordan in "Space Jam" and Shaquille ONeal in "Kazaam."

In short, due to Washingtons performance, I would likely recommend this film to anyone willing, but for avid basketballs fanatics who love watching their smug, obstinate key players in action, well, this picture is a dead hit.
Great Soundtrack     On: 2005-08-08

Public Enemys soundtrack to Spike Lees He Got Game is some great music. Public Enemys return after disappearing for a few years is a spellbinding concept album about the sport industry. KRS One and the Wu Tang Clans Masta Killa make guest raps on this album. This also has another great collaboration on it. On the title track the loop sample of Buffalo Springfield continues through and the Stephen Stills starts to sing the song at the end with Flava Flav introducing him. Favorites include Resurrection ft. Masta Killa, He Got Game ft. Stephen Stills, Unstoppable ft. KRS One, Revelation 33 1/3 Revolutions, Politics of the Sneaker Pimps, What You Need Is Jesus, and Go Cat Go. Recommended
One of the best basketball dramas     On: 2005-06-17

After producing mediocre stuff like Crooklyn and Bamboozled in the mid-1990s, Spike Lee rebounded strongly in 1998 with He Got Game. This was easily Lees best film since Malcolm X in 1992.

At first, moviegoers may be inclined to think that He Got Game will be little more than a slam-dunk fest that will showcase the athletic talent of its lead actor, Ray Allen (one of the NBAs premier players). Truth be told, however, He Got Game is more a sentimental drama than a sports movie, and the film focuses primarily on the behind-the-scenes pressures, temptations, and betrayals that often confront athletes as they are recruited by major universities or establish their professional careers. Spike Lee does a nice job of poignantly depicting the complex issues of money, sex, groupies, and greedy agents who prey on aspiring young athletes.

Although not a professional actor, Ray Allen does a splendid job in his role as Jesus Shuttlesworth - a high school senior who is faced with the difficult, high-pressure decision of which college he will attend the following fall. Denzell Washington delievers a spectacular performance as always, this time playing Jesuss father (Jake Shuttlesworth) who is serving a prison sentence for involunarity killing his wife. His mothers accidental death fuels Jesuss intense hatred for his father, but now his father is under pressure from the state governor to persuade Jesus to play basketball for the governors alma mater. If Jesus agrees to do so, the governor has agreed to commute Jakes sentence. The beautiful Rosario Dawson is quite convincing as Jesuss gold-digging girlfriend with ulterior motives.

Fans of Spike Lees films will notice several of Spikes regulars returning in cameo appearances in He Got Game, including John Turturro, Lonetta McKee, and Bill Nunn. Basketball personalities such as Dick Vitale, John Thompson, and Rick Fox also appear in the film, adding a sense of realism to the plot.

Much more than a simple basketball film, He Got Game tackles issues of race, class, exploitation, and family relationships. Interestingly enough, Spike Lee employs much more sex in this film than he usually does - porn star Heather Hunter appears in a cameo and Rosario Dawson delivers a sex scene of her own. The most graphic sex scene involves a menage-a-trois between Jesus and two blonde groupies during a recruiting visit to a prospective college.

Ultimately, Jesus discovers that the man he hates most is the cares most for him. Jake does not exploit his son, nor does he manipulate Jesus for personal gain.

He Got Game is a sentimental drama that should appeal to any sports fan, and the acting is complemented by a great soundtrack. Unfortunately, the DVD lacks extras - only a theatrical trailer is provided. An interview with the director or Ray Allen (discussing real-life experiences with the issues dealt with in the film) would have been a great addition.

Spike Lee proves once again that he is a very talented director, and Denzel Washington delivers one of his greatest performances of all time. Ray Allen is not a great actor, but Denzel proves that he can carry any cast on his shoulders.

this movie is awesome, i just saw it today, its one of my favorite basketball movies right up there with Above the Rim, Denzel is great in this one, Ray Allen is pretty good in his debut, the only part that bothers me is the end with the ball coming out of nowhere, but anyways, if you like basketball, go see this movie, its great
Game Time     On: 2005-03-11

This soundtrack performed fully by Public Enemy is just another aspect of consciousness. Public Enemy has been just that with their prior releases and didnt leave us thirsting for knowledge on this one. As the hook goes on "Game Face", "...you know the name, P.E. / you know the game, P.E. /we aint for the fame / were for the change / I wake up every day with my game face on..." "Unstoppable" featuring KRS-One is a beautiful collaboration and a personal favoriate. Even though a lot of subjects pertain to basketball, Chuck D. still finds a way to compare it to everydays society and life. The rock fueled "Go Cat Go" is even a good tune for rap and hip hop lovers. Not quite a classic but well worth the money. Maybe it should have been called Public Enemy Got Game instead.
Spike Lee's "He Got Game"     On: 2005-02-01

Spike Lee scores a game winner with "He Got Game." He portrays a high school basketball player going through the recruitment process. Ray Allen plays the lead role as Jesus Shuttlesworth and does a great job. Denzel Washington plays his incarcirated dad who also has a say on where he wants his son to go to school.
Spike Lee does a great job going into the details of how money, sex, drugs, and women can influence a young mas decision on where to go school. I give this movie five stars and would recommend it to any sports fan especially one that loves basketball. Other movies compared to this one would be "Above the Rim" which you could purchase as a set from Amazon.com.

Great Movie...     On: 2004-12-20

This movie is very good, i am a huge spike lee fan. Ray Allen is great in this film...when i first saw this i had no idea who he was, and would of never guessed he was a basketball player. And to the post that said "he might consider Milla Jovovich if you were coming out of prison too"...your crazy, shes hot.
Spike's best.     On: 2004-08-27

I think this is Spike Lees best. Ive seen all his films and this is the only one I can watch over and over. Aside from most of his films this one doesnt seem to force a message. It also appeals to a larger audience than his other films.
Ray Allen who has the lead:great b-ball-player but bad actor     On: 2004-03-30

This movie probably couldve been at least a little good if SPIKE LEE hadnt casted the NBA-player RAY ALLEN, he joins Dennis Rodman, Shaquille ONeal & Rick Fox (who also is in the movie) in the list of BASKETBALL-PLAYERS who makes movies but cant act.

Denzel does good work in the film YES but it takes more to make a good movie than one or two people in it who knows how to act (Hill Harper is the second one).

Not a very moving story mainly becouse RAY ALLENs and MILLA JOVOVICs horrible acting.

If you thought that rappers were bad actors, they are nothing against b-ball players.

Any SPIKE LEE-movie is better than this one so skip it.

Denzel and Allen Great...
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-03-28

Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen) is the top high school prospect in the country. His father, Jake Shuttlesworth (Denzel Washington) is in jail for accidently killing his wife. THe govenor has promised Jake that if he can convince his son to play for his alma mater that he will cut his prison time signifigantly. Jesus has never forgiven his father and has hatred toward him. There is tons of symbolism in this movie. Ray Allen had a great debut, especially for a basketball player! He really did a great job, and Denzel also gave a great performance as usual. Go see this movie it is very moving and is my personal favorite of all time.
Best from Spike Lee ever!     On: 2004-03-22

Touching father and son story     On: 2004-02-25

I didnt pay attention to "He Got Game" when it first came out, since Im not a big basketball fan. Boy was I pleasantly surprised when I did see it.

I think its one of Spike Lees best movies. "He Got Game" covers lots of issues: interracial dating, black stereotypes, the college athlete, corruption in college athletics, the politics behind sports, the incarceration of Black men, and most of all, a father trying to make amends with his son.

"He Got Game" is loaded with symbolism, each time you see it, you will pick up something new (the kids names: "Mary" and "Jesus"; the last basketball shot, etc.).

Most of all, I recommend this movie to you because I find it touching, and felt emotions that I certainly did not expect from a Spike Lee movie. My suggestion: see it for Fathers Day!

OH MY STARS, so bad
by: Anonymous    On: 2004-01-14

Spike Lee, like The-Man-Dumb-Enough-to-marry-Madonna (er Guy Ritchie), and Kevin Smith, had one good beginning movie (Do The Right Thing for Lee) which, though far from a masterpiece, showed excellent promise. And like his aforementioned overrated peers (with Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Clerks, respectively), he has spent the rest of his sad career trying recapture this lightning in a bottle, in the form of worse and worse rehashes of old characters from the previous films, and preaching his political/social theory-- like the message of this film, which is "money makes evil". Insightful, dummy.

This is Lees homage to uptown basketball, where (GASP!) there is corruption afoot. Wow. Thanks for the info, Captain obvious. Tell me, is alcoholism bad too?

Denzel Washington pulls off the "misunderstood angry black man" role he does in every film written for him (to see him not rely on this and actually show chops, see The Hunt For Red October or Fallen), and Ray Allen proves for the umpteenth time why sports stars/ musicians should not act, especially those who cant read. Honestly, Lee couldnt find an actor with chops to read this role, instead of mumbling like a fool like Allen does?

Lee interjects the film with countless shots of women naked, trying desperately to deflect your view from the crappy script and shoddy character development. It doesnt even work the first time, which is sad, considering he hires porn stars. Poor Spike. he had such promise. Then again, Im sure Joel Schumacher did once too.

If you liked this movie, chances are you probably believe in vast conspiracies involving everyone but you. This movies about as well put together as an NBA basketball game.

should be a classic

Everytime I watch this movie...i Love it even more...and every time I watch it I find new things i didnt even see before, new symbolism and special ideas...the ending scene throws me off everytime..i love it!
He Got Game     On: 2003-11-29

He Got Game, the surprisingly well acted and extremely entertaining film by Spike Lee starring Denzel Washington and basketball star Ray Allen takes an interesting look at "the next Coney Island basketball prodigy. This movie depicts high school basketball star Jesus, (the SuperSonics Ray Allen) and his hectic life leading up to his big decision: College or NBA? and if college, which one. It shows how he is pressured by agents, friends, and anyone else who can pressure him, and looks at advantages and disadvantages of both scenarios, the NBA and going to college. Denzel Washington plays Jesuss father, who is in prison for the manslaughter of his mother. Jesus acts as if he does not exist and hopes never to see him again. However, when the governor hears that an inmate in his systems son is the nations top high school basketball star, he gives him a bargain; he will allow his father out of prison for a short period to try to convince Jesus to commit to his Alma Mator, The Big State University. If Jesus is willing to attend, his father will be paroled. This film also provides an indepth look at life in the inner city and high school, also the current issue of over publicizing high school sports and exposing kids to early. This movie will be particularly enjoyable if your are a basketball fan but is very good no matter what. This moving film provides an indepth look at a father trying to make a last appeal to a son, a struggling family, (Jesus and his sister) a struggling city, and a different perspective into the life of a high schooler.
Overdrawn and overhyped.     On: 2003-11-21

While Ill admit Spike Lee is a talented film maker, I cant help but feel many of his films (including his more recent ones) are just too long and draw their morals out almost to an excruciating point.

This movie, while considered by many to be one of his best, doesnt stand out so. The whole idea of C.R.E.A.M. and choosing a decent life over a famed one is very thoroughly discussed, so much to the point that you have to feel guilty eating at a McDonalds. The conflict between Denzels character and his son goes on forever and doesnt seem intending to resolve itself any time soon...in fact, like most Spike Lee films, the characters get involved not with each other but with sub-plots and minor characters that do nothing to advance the story. Milla Jovovich cant act, and her character doesnt do much except whine and get naked. In fact, sex seems to be what carries this film, as Spike Lee throws sex in every thirty minutes as if to keep the audience awake when the pacing turns dull. Well...that technique doesnt ALWAYS work...

This had potential, but deliver it does not.

Absoultely Sick Good     On: 2003-08-28

One of the best rap cds I have ever heard. Chuck D, as always, delivers a dominating vocal performace. When Chuck talks, you listen. There is certainly a more modern and less abrasive sound to this disc in comparison with some earlier PE recordings. As expected, the lyrics are political and even more on the mark than usual. The beats are incredible almost without exception. Favorite tracks include Unstoppable (KRS-One gives great guest vocals), Is Your God a Dog, House of the Rising Son, Game Face, Politics of the Sneaker Pimps, What You Need is Jesus. The title track is also great -- Ive just burned myself out from hearing it a lot. The tracks not mentioned are also very good, better than the vast majority ...that passes as rap these days. Highly recommended.
We Got Game
by: bouzoukia    On: 2003-06-03

Although its not my favourite Spike Lee Joint, "He Got Game" is easily one of his best films, and it sure helps when youve got as many fine performances/cameos as this film does.

Denzel Washington (whos incapable of giving a lousy performance) and Ray Allen as Jake and Jesus Shuttlesworth respectively, give the film its anchors, allowing Lee to project his soapboxes and political rants more effectively than in earlier efforts such "Malcolm X".

It also helps to have Public Enemy back on board with a boomin soundtrack (their best album in years), and other Spike Lee regulars Lonette McKee, Bill Nunn, and John Turturro--his cameo as a zealot college basketball coach is great.

The story moves along briskly enough, isnt overdone, and the editing is as good as anything Oliver Stone chooses to claim as his own. A number of great quotes, and more than enough humour to lighten up the proceedings before they get too dark. Definitely worth owning.

Denzel at his best...     On: 2003-01-07

This is an awesome movie starring my favorite actor Denzel Washington and my favorite basketball player, Ray Allen. Well actually this movei is the reason he became my favorite basketball player. Basically Denzel Washington is in jail for accidently killing his wife. He is supposed to be in there for like 15 years. His son however, Ray Allen who doesnt like his dad or forgive him for killing his mother is the greatest high school basketball player in the country. Now Ray has to decide if he wants to turn pro or if he wants to go to college, and if college what college he wants to go to if that. But you see, the jail man judge or sumthin lets Denzel out of jail for one week to try to convice his son to go to a certain college, if he is successful he will get his servance cut in half! See, this is going to be a lot harder because Ray doesnt like his Dad so he doesnt want to listen to him. See, Allen is also a little bitter because Denzel left his son alone to take care of his little sister. Now, if he goes to the pros it wont be as difficult to take care of her. In some parts of the movie it does get quite boring when they just show Denzel getting out of jail and not having really anything to do with his son. Allen depends on his family for adivce and gets it. So what does Ray decide to do? Well your going to have to pick up this movie to find out. And trust me it will be worth it because it is exxtrordinary! Pick it up today. HOLLA!
A rare Hollywood work of art     On: 2002-10-04

Spike Lees latest, He Got Game, is among his best.

I must however issue a WARNING: He Got Game, like most of Spike Lees works, is VERY SATIRICAL IN NATURE! That means it does contain steryotypes, exaggerated characters and rascism. If you are offended by this, or the sexual content which does appear, this movie is not for you.

Onwards, for those open-minded to this kind of thing, this is a great work of art. It features the Oscar winning Denzel Wasington (Training Day) as a convicted murderer who is released conditionally to please society. Basketball star Ray Allen plays Denzels son, doing what he does best--play basketball. A profound yet entertaining movie, with a slight tinge of abstraction towards its end.

It is one of the few DVD gems I highly recommend for those not offended by the former.

Compelling Story - Senseless Spike Lee Views....
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-08-20

Once again, rather then Spike Lee making trully great movie that will appeal to everyone; Lee injects his political/social views into what could have been a great movie. Good performances by D. Washington and rookie actor NBA star Ray Allen carry this movie. I thought the story had incredible promise, but Spike Lee once again has to inject his personal agenda while turning off 80% of the people who would go see this film.

First, every women featured in this film is white/latin and a whore/slut. An unusual combination considering this film is about about black inner city basketball. Not one black female shows up this film with any of kind of speaking role or substance.

The story turns into the absurd about half way through and stops making sense. Also, Rick Fox is well, Rick Fox. Nuff said. Listening to him try to sound street/from the hood is very laughable. I imagined he listed to some NWA records to prep for this role.

The most compelling part of the movie is the climax, D Washington playing R Allen in a classic Father/son one on one battle. This scene saves the movie.

Only ignorant, self-involved white people would dislike this     On: 2002-07-08

Lee highlights problems not only in the world of professional sports, the ghetto, and race in America, but he does it all while weaving a moving story about basketball, redemption, and the relationship between a father and son. He has big things to say about the sold-out soul of professional athletics, but the film would be remarkable without this social commentary. I dont care if Washington won an Oscar for Training Day, this is truly his greatest performance. Ray Allen is also surprisingly good as the countrys best high school basketball player, who is being pursued by everyone from NBA agents to his own girlfriend. The people who dislike this film are always ignorant about good filmmaking, and too involved in their white suburban lives to understand what Spike Lee is attempting to say about a variety of social topics.
horrible movie     On: 2001-12-16

This was one of Lees worst. There were a load of unnecessary scenes that made the movie way too long. Also, as usual, this movie has a ton of jibes at white people and how they victimize black folks. However, Ray Allen was the worst part. This guy has horrible diction, trying really hard I could understand maybe half of what the guy said. I cant believe Ebert praised his performance.
MISGUIDED     On: 2001-06-10

...He Got Game was not quite as good as I thought it should be. Denzel Washington was superb as always, as the jailed father of a basketball player, who is allowed out of jail to help convince his semi-estranged son to attend a certain university. Washington is convincing. His sexual escapades with the relatively untalented Milla Jovovich are not all that believable, although I guess if I had been in prison for so long I might consider Jovovich also. The real life basketball player who plays the basketball star who has to choose his path is all right. He is no actor, though, and his path to decisionmaking is pretty long and boring and there is just a bit too much sex in it. His conniving girlfriend Lala is trying to make him turn pro and is seeing agents on the side. She also has no qualms about not being loyal to him. Misdirected misfire, this film. It is a shame, but it did serve my immediate purposes.
More than just about basketball...     On: 2001-05-13

This is a movie about basketball. Its a Spike Lee film too. So its bound to express his well-known love for the game. As we can expect from him, his view is a fresh, uncompromising one. Theres a harsh reality behind all the exaggerations and hype.

The story surrounds a high-school basketball star with the unlikely name of Jesus and the most important decision he must make in his life -- what college basketball scholarship he will accept. Temptations are everywhere and everyone around him feels entitled to some of his future financial success. Denzel Washington plays his father who is serving a long prison sentence for murdering his wife, the boys mother. However, the governor wants the boy to go to his alma mater and therefore grants him a week out of prison to also influence the boy.

Spike Lees camera seeks out the outrageous details that add the wince, the pow and the dimension to the film. It explores human nature as well as some ugly truths using the vehicle of the story as an allegory. The music is an eclectic mix of Aaron Copeland and Public Enemy and somehow it works. And there are also cameo performances by real live basketball players and coaches.

I enjoyed the video and can even forgive the fact that it was a little too long and that some of the acting did not measure up to Denzel Washingtons superb performance. Spike Lee fans will love it. Recommended.

YES!!!     On: 2001-03-16

This CD scores! This CD has hit after hit and keeping the Public Enemy style. Its got everything: the beats, the lyrics, the swears. He Got Game is one CD that is hard to stop listening to. If you like Public Enemy than I suggest you buy this CD!!
PE'S GOT ITS "GAME FACE" ON...     On: 2001-02-04

and once again, Chuck Ds genius shines through. This is only a slight departure from PEs fierce mix of on target observations and hardcore beats. This soundtrack captures the essence of Spikes film on CD and Chuck D meets the challenge put before him. Tired of soundtracks that are thrown together to launch hit records, but have no connection to the film? Then this CD is for you. The title track may seem like PE going a little soft, but listen carefully to the lyrics. Which is something you find yourself doing on every cut. And when you listen, you find Chuck making incisive observations about the state of basketball today, through the eyes of the high school phenom. "Politics of the Sneaker Pimps" and "Super Agent" are both on target and get you to examine the "BLING-BLING" mentality of the game today. Other great cuts include "Is Your God a Dog," "Game Face" and "Unstoppable," with the TEACHER, KRS ONE! And Flava Flav brings the good time with "Shake Your Booty," one of my favorite tracks on the disc. This CD continues the tradition of great Spike Lee movie, great soundtrack ("Do the Right Thing" and "Jungle Fever" are two other favorites). Soundtracks that are excellent companion pieces to the films. "HE GOT GAME" SCORES!

tight
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-01-02

this movie was tight. The ending was a little weak, but the plot shows what it takes, and what some people have to overcome to get anywhere in life. This movie isnt a waste of anyones time unless you aint a basketball fan.
He got game
by: Anonymous    On: 2001-01-02

He got game is a splendid movie! Most basketball movies out there are just an excuse to have footage of people throwing a basketball. He got game is more than that, Spike manages to intricately weave personal dilema of Jesus and his family into the movie. The movie is a touching dipiction of a young man who is forced to grow-up before his time because of his socio-economic position and a young man who stands to be exploited because of his natural talents. The only qualm I have is that the ending is rather suspect otherwise, a great movie.
Yea Boyeee! He GOT Game     On: 2000-12-18

This is one of the best Hip Hop soundtracks, I never saw the movie but the music is just CHILL. Especially like Politics of The Sneaker Pimps, which is anti-pompous-sportsplayers-wearing-brandname-shoes. Supa Agent has the beat like that, and the all time mostest bestest Flavor Flav song in the whole wide world is the one right on this album, Shake Yo Booty, for all those Flava (I know youre out there) fans. Is your God a Dog gives out some food for thought, not reccomended for any die-hard christians out there, but for them theres christian music, and plenty of it.
This Movie...........WOW     On: 2000-12-04

not so much as reviewing the dvd, but the movie in general. Its REALLY bad, nobody saw it and theres a reason for that. It has no story, the acting is terrible and the ending is the worst part. It leaves the movie viewer with a sense of disgust. Even if you like basketball i suggest you stay away from this movie. Because you will just be wasting your time and will never get the time back in your life. Spike lee is a terrible director and gives other directors bad names because he calls his movies joints, which is pointless. Bad movie i suggest not watching it. If you have i feel bad for you, especially you Jeff, i know you love it. Its really bad.
This movie has game
by: midnightblue_80    On: 2000-09-15

I must say that Spike Lee did a great job in making this movie. Jake (Denzel Washington) plays a prisoner who is in jail for murdering his wife years ago. He is given a chance to get out of prison if he does one thing. He has to convince his son, Jesus (Ray Allen) to attend a certain college. If he does that, Jake is a free man. Of course, it wont be easy because Jesus has to first forgive his dad for what he did to his mom before he can even think of going to a certain university in his dads favor.

Denzel Washington and Ray Allen both put on great performances to make this a great movie. The basketball sequences in the movie are exciting, but the drama in "He Got Game" is what makes the movie work so well. I recommend anybody to get "He Got Game."

Spike Lee is Great - as usual
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-08-24

Hes Got Game was a good movie. Powerful storyline about a strained Father/Son relationship. The only problem I had with it were the sex scenes, which I feel were completely unnecessary. And too much cursing was going on.

Otherwise, it nearly brought me to tears, and the actors were wonderful. Denzel is so good at immersing himself completely into his characters. Good job!

He Got Game Is Great!     On: 2000-07-15

He Got Game is a great movie about Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen), a senior at Lincoln High School on Coney Island. This movie depicts the mental struggle Jesus must endure when he must choose both the outcome of his basketball career and whether or not to forgive his father (Denzel Washington) for his mothers death. A powerful drama that shouldnt stay out of any basketball fans collection.
Wow     On: 2000-07-14

Best soundtrack and best PE album of all times! This album fits perfectly to the outstanding movie. "He got game", "Unstoppable", "Shake your booty", "Game face", "What you need is Jesus" (the best song on this album), and "Super agent" are all great songs, the others are good too. ! Unstoppable - Public Enemy on a disk!
Denzel Washington is Amazing     On: 2000-05-13

This is a terrific movie, despite the fact that Spike Lee lost his way in the meandering plot; the ending doesnt make much sense. And of course, theres a bit of misogny in the portrayal of women. However, Ray Allen is wonderful as Jesus Shuttlesworth and Rick Fox is a tasty treat. I would love to see him in other movies.

Denzel Washington is a REVELATION. Of course Ive admired his work for years because hes so handsome. But I havent appreciated his acting ability (aside from his performance in Glory) in quite some time. This performance is nuanced and subtle and complex and brilliant. Hes humble and arrogant, noble and low-life, all in one character. It reminds me of his role in Mississippi Masala.

If you love NBA basketball, this a great movie to watch.

My favourite movie     On: 2000-04-02

As I`m a big basketball-fan i enjoyed this movie very much. Spike Lee, Ray Allen and especially Denzel Washington did a great job. I also liked the appearance of Travis Best. This movie gives you a lot of information about how pro-sports business really works. The part with the sportrs agent is my absolute favoueite. Check this out, You won`t be disappointed!
Moving father / son story set to basketball     On: 2000-03-12

Spike Lees film contribution of 1998 marks his greatest graduation as a filmmaker since "Malcolm X". "He Got Game" documents the story of Jesus Shuttlesworth, the top high school basketball player in the U.S. who is receiving incentives one way or the other, to attend someones university. Jesus father Jake - in prison for accidentally killing his mother - is offered an early parole in exchange for Jesus enrollment at the governors alma mater. Jake has one week to convince his son, who wants nothing to do with him. This film is really not about basketball, it is instead, a tale of a father seeking the forgiveness & respect of his son. Lee makes good documentation of the cutthroat world of professional sports recruiting. Washington, as always, delivers a touching performance. Whether asking his son for forgiveness, or giving his wifes tombstone an embrace, Washington portrays a flawed man in deep need to heal his family.

Lee had no need to cast an NBA player, but cast Ray Allen anyway, who does a fine job. The music, a mix of Public Enemy and Aaron Copeland, is an odd combination that Lee puts to effective use. This film introduced Lees slower pacing of storytelling, which he would continue to do with "Summer Of Sam", and it works quite well.

One of the best soundtracks of 1998     On: 2000-03-02

This album has pure energy, pure lyrics, pure beats. Everything went right in this soundtrack. Public Enemy seldomly puts out any bad albums. The title song in this album "He Got Game" was a pretty weak song. The beats were nice though, but this song leans a little towards the blues and jazz catogorie. That was the only song that I disliked out of 12 tracks. The album starts off with the song Ressurection, that track was so beautifully produced it sounded way beyond Public Enemys music. Masta Killa dropped a verse that was so so tight. Track 3 wit KRS-ONE was one of the best, number 5 had a cool beat. The rest of the tracks were just Public Enemy style. This is a great album for a Public Enemy fan.
Wouldn't make the Final Four, but...
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-02-28

Even a non-basketball fan can enjoy this surprisingly gentle film about the reconciliation of a father and son. When I say "surprisingly gentle," I mean the tone of the film, not the content. While there is some violence and gratutious sex, Denzel Washington as Jake Shuttlesworth and Ray Allen as his son, Jesus, convey the multitude of emotions that men in their situations would feel. The best compliment I can think of giving Mr. Washington is that he is a human being in every film he does, not some plastered-on character study of what an actor "thinks" his role should be. Its the acting that makes this movie good. As for the other aspects of the film, the music by Aaron Copeland was a perfect selection because it contributed greatly to the feeling of gentleness and grace that the actors conveyed. I also liked some of the camera work, though the fact that I noticed it means it wasnt as smooth as it could have been. Probably the weakest part of the film was the script itself. There are many subplots that weve seen handled better in other films and I was shocked at the incredibly hokey final two minutes. In fact, this ending made me mad because it was so out of place with the rest of the film. If you turn off the DVD immediately after Jakes and Jesuss reading of the letter, you will be able to avoid what would be considered a sendup of "The Natural" in another film. Come on, Spike; youre a better filmmaker than this.
Definitely not usual PE but a masterpiece.     On: 2000-02-28

This album is a hell lot better than most of the rap albums out there. It is consciousness raising and watching the movie, its a wonderful complement. Ths title song is a little cheesy but the track with KRS-1 is definitely one of mad anger against the overestablishment etc. etc. I would suggest listening to the soundtrack and tell you that its a wonderful rap track compared to others like Belly etc. etc.
Decent, but. . .     On: 2000-02-08

Spike and Denzel have done better things; however, this film like any Spike Lee film is worth watching..

He Never Had Game
by: Anonymous    On: 2000-01-30

I was looking for a father-son movie for myself and my 16 year old. What a mistake! "He Got Game" has gratuitous sex that made us both blush and had nothing to do with the plot. Some cursing would be expected in a movie about coming up out of the projects. For someone named Jesus the main character is not at all Christ-like. And one other thing-Spike-next time you make a movie about the projects, they dont play ball on painted courts or have glass backboards! Unreal!
Jesus really became a god on the court
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-10-07

The movie was really good. It had a lot of meaning to it. I wasnt just a movie that was just about basketball it was about how a young man named Jesus lived with out his mother and his father. Jesus was a senior and took care of his little sister, payed his bills, studied basketball, and kept his social life. When Jesus was small his father took him out on the court and made Jesus play ball all night, intill Jesus played good enough .One day Jesus got made and left the court as his dad was really getting frustrated with him. That night his father killed their mother on a accendent. His father was put to prison. Jesus never forgave him for that. One day as his father Got out of prison for a week but he had to make a promise with the government. It was "You get your son to go to State College and you will have a early release". Therefore when they let him out he tried he also tried to get his son to talk to him, but Jesus didnt want to listen. The day before he had to go his father made him a deal "If you bet me this game then you can pick any college you want, but if you lose then you have to go to State College" unfortuntely his dad lost, but he still went to State College. This movie was really good. I wouldnt mind watching this movie again. Not only was this movie good but it was also the real deal. It showed how life really is, therefore I gave this movie a 5 star.

WOW !
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-09-06

He Got Game is a movie which really seemed like another "White men cant jump" b-ball flic but its anything but. Spike has really done well with this and the directing is quite superb. If you like basketball then you MUST SEE THIS! Even if you arent a b-ball fan, you will still be moved by this flic. Acting by Denzel Washington and Ray Allen (actual NBA player) were both great.Unfortunately this one isnt for the kids as there is a bit of sex and language shown. This is actually based on the NBA superstar Stephon Marbury and how he made it all the way. GO AND SEE IT!
Good but get rid of the nudity
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-08-28

I thought this movie was great but I only gave it three stars because it was too long (many scenes werent necessary) and there was too much sex (it would have been a good movie for kids to watch if not for the sex scenes). I wish Spike Lee would stop making all of his movies into softcore porns. Its totally needless. He did the same thing with Summer of Sam and I dont see what the point of it was.

The Music is from Brooklyn, too!!!
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-06-20

He Got Game touched me on many levels. Other reviewers have eloquently pointed to the powerful subplots within the film. But it was the music that drove me nuts. I loved it! Lees use of Aaron Copeland musical fanfares and themes was brilliant. Especially since Copeland is considered one of the best American composers of the 20th century. And, oh yeah__he was born and raised in Brooklyn!!! My hat is off to Spike Lee for sharing his passion and love for the place he knows as home. Spike Lee is Brooklyn through and through, forever and ever. Amen.

An insult to all women
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-06-09

This movie was terrible. There are no strong women characters (I am a white male). Every female character is either playing the lead character for their own use (money) or they are selling their bodies to him. It is an insult to all women and to African-American women especially. If a Caucasian man had made this movie, he would be called racist and sexist, why is okay for an African-American to make it?

He Got Game was well directed by Spike Lee, and well acting also. Allen does a superb cross-over, and Washington shines as usual. A surprise performance would definately be that of Dakota, played by the absolutly GORGEOUS, and ENTICING Milla Jovovich. Shes acts well, and displays some of her many talents, and Im not talking about faking it.

This album is better than the average rap album but it falls so far short of the work they did in the late 80s and early 90s. I am disappointed. I played the first three PE albums until the tape broke. This will collect some dust as it only lasted a few weeks in my cars rotation.
An Intelligent Movie about Black father/son relationships!
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-05-13

Some people seem to think the movie should have been less serious. My question to them is, why?? The movie was intended to be about the relationship between a father and son. Basketball was the back-drop. A realistic portrayal of the behind the scenes sleeze that takes place in the world of Black athletes. Great movie...a classic.
Spike Lee's Best
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-05-11

This is a brilliant movie. Spike Lee is a true artist when he wants to be, and He Got Game shows that. If you love this movie, I highly reccomend reading Darcy Freys book The Last Shot, which details Coney Island basketball. He Got Game borrows a lot from that book.

One gripe with this movie- do not watch it with a meathead. Some people will say that this movie "sucks" or whatever because it doesnt have enough basketball. Dont listen to those people. He Got Game is an out and out classic movie.

He got game - a great comeback of the PE
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-05-11

As with Muse Sick, PE tried a slightly different sound, from the rest of the albums. But with He got Game, they once again settled on their rightful seat -> as kings of hardcore rap The CD which was made as a soundtrack to the movie with the same name also contains some cooperation with Masta Killa and KRS-1 + the title song He got game features Stephen Stills. On He got game PE shows that they have kept the old PE style alive, when other rappers tend to get empty with time passing by. The sound is great, Chuck has once again written some great lyrics to keep the whities shakin in their pants. He got game is a great comeback of the PE, and we all await There is a Poison Going On released this year!

a dramatic version of "Hoop Dreams"
by: Anonymous    On: 1999-04-10

Basically, this is "Hoop Dreams" in dramatic form as it explores how black young athletically gifted are exploited by everyone who can possibly make money off the deal. I actually though the actor that played Jesus did a good job. His girlfriend was unforgettable.

Some criticisms: It seems that of late Denzel Washington has had to play opposite a lot of white females. What gives? As usual, Spike Lee depicts the seamy side of life very graphically. Actually, there arent that many directors or screenwriters, black and white, that dare to push the envelope as far as he does. When will Lee ever depict a true love story? His male/female leads tend to use one another on some level.

However, one of Spike Lees strengths is that he always leaves his endings ambiguous. They are never what you expect.

He Got Game is defiantely one of the best films of all-time. This movie will jump-start the carrer of b-ball phenom Ray Allen as an actor. It is a great story with lessons that can be useful in life. It teaches that people can eliminate hate from their heart no matter the crime. Also, the Buffy/Suzi scene is VERY hot!!! Check it out. This is definately my favorite movie.
Excellent Film     On: 1999-02-14

I love this movie. Definately one of my all-time favorites. If it isnt then the only thing that comes close is Glory. Also with Denzel Washington. I love the way the story is told about an upcoming basketball star who gets caught up in lots of trouble. It is an all-star movie. Check it out! And if you dont have a stomach for graphic sex, violence, drug abuse, and harsh language, please check out Glory. It is an excellent movie about a black regiment in the Civil War. Possibly my favorite movie.

Spike Lee really shows his love for basketball in this movie. I think they could have gotten a better actor to play "Jesus Shuttleworth". I would have liked more comedy in this movie to depict the fun side of basketball not just the seriousness of the game.

THE BEST ALBUM OF 1998!!

Best tracks: "Go Cat Go!" (and the lyrics are NOT wack!), "What You Need is Jesus", and "Game Face" (which hijacks the James Bond Theme). The same crew should get together for the next album definitely!

"Unstoppable"- The Blastmaster and the Rhyme Animal together for the first time on a PE album! MORE! MORE!!

Griffs poetry track is on-point. He should flex more on future PE releases.

Flav gets OFF on "Shake Your Booty". Perfect track for the Flav-Man. BUY THE MOVIE! BUY THE SOUNDTRACK? ARE YOU GAME?

I think its good all around but needs more bass sound to it.

CHUCK AND CO. SHOW THEY GOT GAME!!!!!!!     On: 1998-07-16

ITS NICE TO SEE CHUCK RETURN TO DROP SOME COMMON SENSE BACK INTO HIP/HOP MUSIC. ALL THIS CRISTAL, BLUNTS, BOOTIES AND PLAYA HATING IS JUST GETTING OLD. BIG UPS CHUCK.
Public Enemy scores again!     On: 1998-06-26

I thought the title track was one of the best songs of the year. That alone make it 5 Stars.
This Public Enemy CD was off the hook.

This CD was off the hook.I could just sit and listen to that CD all day as if that would really happen. But all in all it was pretty cool.
excellent     On: 1998-06-15

Public Enemy is a talented , mellow rap group. He got game is an awesome song to listen to.I am not the biggest fan of rap but Public Enemy takes rap to a whole new level.I highly recomend this album to anyone who likes new music.
Dissapointing return from Public Enemy

Not as good as expected. Wish that I would of spent money on a different album that I would have listened to more.
The movie IS TOO better!

Good album, but amazingly great film. Maybe the previous reviewer saw it on a small screen. This is a good album for those like me who were previously unfamiliar with rap/hiphop. Because Chuck D. is so obviously brilliant it provides an on-ramp into a sometimes disturbing form of music. The thing about pe is the ability to be absolutely serious and hilarious at the same time. No shootin and rapin like DMX. Chuck D. and Flavor Flav are like a buddy movie with Charleton Heston and Jerry Lewis. Even geezers like me can like this stuff! Be careful in the stores - you might accidentally buy the Aaron Copland soundtrack that has a similar cover. Buy it here and theyll send you the right one.
P.E. should have made Spike Lee's film!

In true P.E. fashion, we get the state of the black nation, this time specific to basketball stardom. This albums lyrics rubs the new, corporate slavery of young, black athletes in our faces. The listener gets in touch with what blood-sucking greed, money, and politics smells like.

While the soundtrack is decidely more three dimensional, the film itself is less profound. Perhaps, as a consequence of the movies subdued flavor, the actual music doesnt pack as much punch into every song as it should. Its true, the song *He Got Game* is the least powerful song on the album.

Nonetheless, the total shot works.

good comeback, great message, weak production.

hot on the heels of their "megamix" album (did anyone buy that?) and a week before their "new" album, the soundtrack from "he got game" was released. basically, this is 12 new pe songs with a few guest stars. highlights are "unstoppable" with krs-one, "resurrection" with masta killa (though mks voice sounds terrible and out of context to chuck ds), and "house of the rising son." low points are "go cat go", which has some amazing production thx to jack dangers (meat beat manifesto) and danny saber, but the lyrics and presentation are just plain wack, homes. "shake your booty" also manages to undermine most of chuck ds rants about the decline of hip hop - flavor has none of the animation that made "i cant do nothin for ya man" a hit. the return of the bomb squad is also a bit disappointing... i expected more detuned horns and a ton of noise - instead, all the tracks sound sparse and uninspired (besides "unstoppable" and "go cat go"). does anyone really like the "he got game" single?

on the plus side, chuck d manages to fit in a ton of information about the state of pro ball today. if anyone in hip hop can talk about sports, its chuck d - he really brings it to all the major problems... a highlight is "politics of the sneaker pimps" and its michael moore-like assault on nike.

all in all, a welcome return of the masters. i cant wait to see what the "real" album is like.
