Cheesy Tire     On: 2007-07-06

The bike looks fine, rides ok. But the tire is like cheese. It leaks after only 2 short rides on a concrete road in a park. I later found a thorn piercing both outer and inner tube. Being a mountain bike, youd expect it to be able to handle a little rougher terrain.
good bike for someone who never intends to ride one     On: 2007-06-03

This bike is very poor quality and I would not recommend. As an example, the front wheel spokes were so out of whack on receipt that the wheel looked warped. Whoever boxed it up at the factory should have noticed it was that way. It was not worth the hassle to return for another as a relacement might have been worse, and cost us more to get it "tweaked" by a professional after assembly than the bike cost. Ill never buy another Mongoose! What a waste of money!
Good weekend bike     On: 2007-04-12

Bike is good for casual riding. Use it extensively on the weekends and its great. This is the first bike that I own and I was able to put it together and tune it up (I do minor work on my car so that may help). Keep in mind that when you get the bike not everything will feel right out of the box. You will need to use it for a week or two to tweak out the minor details (seat position/height, brakes, gear shifter, wheel alignment). Just keep your tools handy.
For Mongoose - this was disappointing.     On: 2007-02-27

This bike is cheap. Its assembly was standard but its parts - from the tires to the brakes were dollar store rubbish. I may not go with Mongoose again. The quality Mongoose once offered just isnt what it used to be.
best bike for the price     On: 2007-02-13

This is the best bike I found in the low end price range. I would suggest to anyone who purchases this bike to take it to a bicycle shop and have it professionally fine tuned and have them finish the assembly for you. It really made a difference and for safety it is the best way to be sure the bike is operating at its best. The man at the bicycle repair shop I took the bike to agreed this is the best bike you can buy for the price. I purchased this bike for my fourteen year old and he is very happy with it.
Mongoose Mountain bike     On: 2007-02-11

seems to be a good bike although it is a bit heavier than others I have. The seat is comfortable and the shocks are good, and it looks sharp. I did have trouble with the gear but Mongoose reacted quickley and sent be a replacement. The assembley is difficult and instructions are unclear..... but a good bike
ok for the price     On: 2007-02-10

I didnt like the handling of the bike itself. The steering seemed a bit off. The quality of the bike itself is just ok. The price is the real attractor for buying it.
Mongouse     On: 2007-01-17

Very well made bike. Well worth the price. Too bad it did not have disk brakes because it would make it better. Otherwise it is an excellent bike.
Awesome bike     On: 2007-01-16

Lightweight & unique beyond our expectations. Arrived in quick amount of time in good condition. This bike was an excellent purchase and the price was extraordinary especially with free shipping & extra $$ off. I would purchase another if I can get the same deal as I did on this one. We are very satisfied with this bike!
Decent bike for the money     On: 2007-01-14

Ok, i paid 60 bucks for this bike during the reent "Amazon Customers Vote" sale and i have to say that it was one heck of a deal for 60 bucks. There arent too many bikes that come with this many features, with the Mongoose name, at this price. The downside though is that because it is shipped, there is a chance that the bike could get damaged as stated by the previous reviewers. When i received mine everything came out fine except for the rear derailleur, the brakes and the rims. The rear derailleur was bent so bad that when the chain was on the largest rear sprocket, the derailleur pulley was actually hitting the spokes on the rim! Anyways, that was resolved by simply taking a crescent wrench to the attachment point on the frame it and bending it back into place. The brakes desperately needed to be adjusted and both rims had to be trued back so that they were round again. So whoever buys this bike (or any bike over the internet for that matter) keep in mind that it will NOT be Ready to Ride. It will definitely need to be "tuned-up" and optimized thanks to the rough trip it just had and the likely poor package job it shipped out in. If youre not ready to do this then i would recommend that you either take the bike to a bike shop and pay them a fee to do it for you, or you just buy your bike from a local shop where this service is typically included in the cost of the bike. However, if you are willing to do this extra step, then by all means it is one heck of a steal. Just dont expect to open it up and start riding it around safely in a matter of minutes. It will probably take a few hours of tweaking at the minimum to get it in tip-top riding condition. So, because of the amount of extra adjustments that needed to be made during assembly i docked the rating 1 star. I gave it 4 stars for the price.
Great Deal for a Top Quality Product     On: 2007-01-13

I bought it for my 12 years old Daughter. This mountian bike is much better than I expected! Vert strong and very light.Top quality. My 12 years old daughter can carry it. Consider I only paid for less than $70 for this one. Similar bikes in our local stores are selling at $150+. It is a real great deal for a top quality product. My daughter liked it very much. Thanks Amazon!
Slightly Damaged in Shipping     On: 2007-01-12

The bike itself was slightly damaged when it first arrived. The shifter on the back tire was actually bent into the tire, so I had to bend it back in place to keep the chain from coming off. Also, the brakes required at least 30 minutes to calibrate correctly, as by default they were rubbing into the tire so it wouldnt turn.

I am new to bikes in general (or at least working with a brand new one), and it was quite a pain to get up to par so I could at least ride it.

Overall, its a good bike in the end- Im glad I purchased it.
My assembly was not as easy as it should have been     On: 2007-01-12

When I received the bike, the wedge that is used to secure the handle bars to the frame was completely stripped. I ended up going to a bike shop and purchasing a new screw/wedge. When I put that in, the wedge was still slipping and the handle bars could turn independently from the wheel itself. I ended up tightening that to the point where I stripped the new screw (go figure), so I had to drill that out. Luckily I still had the old screw, so I tried again. The handle bars now stay secure to the point where I can do lax street riding, but NEVER go mountain biking (with out risking death or loss of limb). Maybe Ill take it to a bike shop again and let them handle it completely. Total additional cost to me so far, about $9, so $70 total (plus about 3 hours of personal labor) for a bike, still not really a bad deal.

Footnotes: Faulty piece of hardware caused me to create a lot of hassle for myself....still worth it for the cost.
Great bike for cheap price     On: 2007-01-12

Got this during the holiday wish list promo...really wanted an xbox 360, but got this for $30... so obviously Im thrilled as it was dirt cheap.

As far as the quality of the bike I have only used it ride in my neighborhood (no mountain use). The bike assembled pretty easy (make sure youve got some allen wrenches)...had to get a new seat due to the fact Im 230lbs...but Im happy with it. The gears are kinda rough to shift so I mainly keep it in the same gear. I think if you want it for light exercise then its great, otherwise you may want to spend more if you are looking for a real mountain bike.
Good bike for under 100 bucks     On: 2007-01-12

Overall a good value. Assembly not too difficult. Clunky gear shifting. Brakes were difficult to adjust. Almost as heavy as a steel bike. Nice ride with the shocks.
Excellent Bike!     On: 2007-01-12

I purchased this bike when it was on "special" the day of Thanksgiving. This bike is awesome, especially for the price I paid!
Cheap & functional sums it up     On: 2007-01-12

Arrived quickly and was simple to assemble.

I have found it impossible to make this a 21 speed because the gear shifter wont allow the degree of control to get into all states. I would have preferred fewer gears with no change issues. The shocks squeak like the dickens but....I expected all of this and am content with my purchase.
Not great, not bad     On: 2007-01-11

Fun for the $30 I paid for, pedal broke off a small jump
Mongoose Bike     On: 2007-01-11

Pretty easy to assemble. Sturdy and easy to ride. For the price, you cant beat it.
Decent, but not heavy-duty     On: 2007-01-11

This is a decent bike, but is not heavy duty and needs some retuning after a good day on the trails. The chain slipped a couple of times after steep climbs and the rims need to be trued. I weigh about 165 lbs, so YMMV.
Awesome Bike for the Price     On: 2007-01-11

I bought this bike for my son for Christmas. He loves it. He says the suspension is great. He is 14 and 64" tall so it has been a challenge to find something comfortable for him.
Very good value...     On: 2007-01-10

I gave it 5-stars because I bought it for $50 during the Customer Vote program Amazon ran around Christmas 06.

Its rather cold up here at the moment (around 30F) so I obviously dont do much riding, but a few days lately have been warm enough to take this bike out and play with it.

First off, the suspension is amazingly smooth and very comfortable to ride. I replaced the standard seat with a wider Gel seat [...]and that just further enhanced the ride.

Secondly, I didnt smack my knees off the handlebars as I have with bikes in the past. I know Im not getting any shorter, so it must be the bike, heh. I really like how comfortable the bike is in general, but its an added bonus to not bang my knees on the handlebars.

A couple other noteworthy comments: Smooth gear shifting, strong brakes, lightweight, very easy to assemble (attach front wheel, handlebars, and peddals, inflate tires, then adjust the brakes and such ie. re-tighten all bolts/nuts/screws before using)

The bike is very nice, I cant wait until its warm enough to go on long rides again. If you were able to buy the bike during Amazons Customer Vote period, then you got an excelent deal, but whether you got the deal or not, either way this bike is a great value.
So-So Bike     On: 2007-01-10

I purchased this bike during the holiday voting event for $60. Good thing it was only that amount. Therefore, I cant complain too much. I use it for commuting to my evening classes downtown. I have only two complaints:
The neck comes loose too often, causing my handle bars to move up and down. All I do is stand up to get momentum at the intersections upon the green light. I dont do any jumps or tricks on my bike, just old fashion commuting with both tires on the ground.
The other is, the seat is slightly uncomfortable. Purchasing a seat cover pad should help, though.

For the amount of money I paid and the type of usage, this serves the purpose.
Pedal Broke off after two weeks     On: 2007-01-10

I liked this bike a lot, and would have given it a better review - but two weeks after buying it a pedal broke off. The threading came unraveled so its near unrepairable. It was poorly shipped as well - parts of the bike were protruding through the box on arrival, although I didnt notice any visible damage.
Mongoose Domain Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike     On: 2007-01-10

The bikes seat post was too short. Other than that, the bike is great!
Bad decision     On: 2007-01-10

I would say, it was bad decision, although I got it under $100. (Thats why I give one more star)

The box was open when I got it. The rear reflector was broken.
In addition, the front gear never shifts to 3.

I didnt want to spend extra $25 to fix the problem.

So, Im enjoying (?) full 14 speeds now -.-

Oh, one more! In my opinion, the bike has bad seat cushion.
Very nice bike overall     On: 2007-01-09

I received this bike for Christmas. Only two minor comlaints.

1. The tires werent inflated completely. This may be standard on bikes though, Im not sure

2. The front brakes werent adjusted properly, but it was an easy fix.

the manual was easy to read, the gears were already assembled, which is a HUGE plus
Mongoose     On: 2007-01-09

For the price, this is a fine bicycle. If I were into serious mountain biking, the bike wouldnt be considered, but for easy stuff, its great
a good bike     On: 2007-01-06

got this bike from amazons customer vote program. it was easy to assemble the bike even when i did not read the manual at all. the bike itself was very sturdy and easy to handle. can not beat a good deal.
THE BIKE IS good BUT...     On: 2007-01-05

THe bike is good but.. it doesnt come with the tools that u need to assemble it.. I didnt know that everything u buy online needs to be assembled... i got the bike on discount during the COOL DEALS.. and it costs almost the same if u assemble it at a bike shop.. quite inconvenient when you dont have time...
Thought I had to at this price - wishing I hadn't     On: 2007-01-02

For $30, I figured Id buy it and donate it to Toys for Tots. I had no idea how difficult it would be to get this thing assembled and adjusted and, several hours later, wish Id never bought it.
Not for Novices     On: 2007-01-02

This bike is impressive looking, unfortunately, unless you are an expert bicycle mechanic you probably should look elsewhere. The components of the bike are fairly cheap and getting the bike to work out of the box will consume many, many hours of time getting it operational. The brakes used on the bike are of very low quality and should be replaced before operating. In addition, the gears that come with the bike are also of extremely low quality and will need major adjustments in order for basic use. Other than the brakes and the defailleurs, the other components are of average quality and perform as expected.

Bottom line is the frame and tires of this bike what you would expect for a bike in this price range. Unfortunately, unless you are very experienced at adjusting and/or replacing brake mechanisms and derailleurs, there are simpler higher quality choices available elsewhere.
NEVER BUY THIS BIKE     On: 2006-12-18

oh I feel very bad of buying this bike. I bought this bike during the amazon thanksgiving deal for 60$. The bike came in a very heavy box and I moved the box into the living room and started assembling. Damn, there is no manual which says which part goes where. The product description says "requires only minimal assembling" but even to do that you at least need a manual. I unpacked it and had no idea on how to put things together, got very upset, so I put the things in the box again and moved it to a corner of my living room. It has been sitting there for a while. I saw lots of screws and small broken parts in the package. I have no idea what all these....

totally wasted 60$. So only if you have a complete bike assembling kit, have patience to spend at least 3 hours and of course able to assemble it by youself without having any manual, then go for it.

From the previous reviewers, it seems that its not a great/sturdy mountain bike so be careful before buying. I am totally upset with this....
Great deal for the price     On: 2006-12-09

I purchased this bike for $60 from the "Amazon Vote" deal, and am very pleased with the purchase. I tried to put it together myself but failed miserably, and ended up taking it to the local campus bike shop to get it put together and tuned up for only $15. Best $15 I ever spent, it only took them an hour and it took me over 2 hours just trying to figure out the directions!

The bike is very lightweight and rides smoothly. I will only be using it to bike to/from campus so I am very pleased with the purchase. I am a 53", 105 lb female and it fits me fine. Great bike for college students!
An attractive bike made of very cheap parts     On: 2006-12-08

Bought this bike during the big sale. I have several bikes and am a pretty good bike tuner. [...] Fortunately the bike was fine. Assembly went smothly. Unfortunately this bike has very poor quality parts, brakes, wheels, shifters, etc. If you need to get a cool bike for around [...] get one of these but make sure it comes from a store that can work with you on set up. Forget being able to adjust the brakes or gears yourself. Basically this is a childs bike made to look like an adults bike. Im 5 foot 10 inches and this bike is way too small. Spending money on a bike like this is a waste of time. [...]
Good bike for the price I paid     On: 2006-12-07

I bought this bike because for $60 I couldnt beat the price, and I knew my wife could use a suspension bike to replace her current rigid. I knew going in that I really only cared about the frame, so the cheap components didnt bother me. Good thing, as out of the box the bike was not even close to tuned. Basic assembly left the brakes locked up and the shifting off. Heres my opinion of the bikes components.

Wheels: Decent aluminum rims, steel spokes, CRAP hubs. Even at this price Id expect quick release skewers on the front wheel at a minimum, and should be on both. The freewheeling cassette in the back is garbage. Sounded like a baseball card in the spokes. I pulled these off and put on a nicer set from my wifes bike.

Tires: Feels like a cheap compound. The mongoose on them looks ok, but screams cheap to me. I cant comment on durability or performance as I have not used them, nor plan to. They could be fine, but I doubt they would be with me 13 years from now like the tires on my own bike.

Brakes: Although the arms flex on the brake boss more than Id like, they are not terrible V-brakes. It takes some time to adjust the preloads so they open equally, but once dialed in they seem fine. The play at the boss will probably lead to squeaking, but well see.

Seat: Seems fine itself. The post is cheap with cheap adjustments, but itll probably stay in place better than some of the more unnecessarily complicated designs out there.

Crankset: Not sure how the bottom bracket is, but the crankset is decent. Its forged alloy and seems well built. The gearset is fine as well.

Front Derailer: This derailer really doesnt fit the crankset correctly. The cage is so short that in order for the chain to clear it you need to mount it in a position that doesnt provide enough clearance for the chain to shift. This piece will go... soon.

Rear derailer: Also a junk design. The routing of the cable over a plastic relief groove should no nothing for precise shifts, and the adjustment screws were just barely able to adjust as much as I needed. Lastly, because both of these are not rebuildable units, you cant get them off without separating the chain. Not a huge deal, but I prefer to leave chains alone if I can.

Shifters: These are basic Grip Shifts. Not much to screw up here.

Brake Levers: Sloppy, but standalone which is nice. I am not fond of brake shifter combos.

Frame: The mainframe is aluminum which is great, although I think any weight savings was thrown out the window with the massive amounts of gusseting used. At least it should be plenty strong. The rear swingarm looks to be Cro-mo, and looks well designed. I would have liked to have seen the water bottle be located somewhere beside the underside of the downtube. Noone wants to drink water from a bottle covered in mud kicked off the tires. My wife has a camelback so it should be ok.

Suspension: This bike is sprung stiff enough for a large person. Im concerned it might be a bit much for my 100 lb wife, but well see. Both the rear strut and the front fork are really basic, and I was surprised to see no damper rate adjustments. Getting the bike on the road will be the test of how it performs.

Overall, like I said before, I cant complain about any of this for [...]. Even if I stripped every component off of it and started from scratch Id still be ahead of the game. Not bad Amazon!

AWESOME     On: 2006-12-05

This is probably the best I have ever owned. Great bike great price.
Bike is well made and very durable.
Good bike, little hard to set up     On: 2006-12-04

First off, this is a good, working bike. There is a little noise when on higher gears but other than that the ride is smooth and stable.

Amazon shipped the bike quickly and it arrived within three days after the order. As mentioned in earlier reviews, the handlebars, wheel, seat and pedals need to be assembled. No big problems except for front brake adjustment - theyre cantilever brakes, so just take them apart, make sure you put the wheel in center, squeeze and tighten. It took me a while to adjust, but if youve assembled bikes before, itll take less than 30 min.

No complaints, other than setup and that I have to carry it up and down two flights of stairs every day on my way to work :-D
Good bike for the money     On: 2006-12-04

I received this bike a while ago. The handling or packaging could be better. One side of the package was ripped and it was duct tapped together. The metal rod was sticking out (the rod to hold the bike standing up when not in use) and it was bent during the delivery. Not only the rod was bent; the bracket where to rod tied to was also bent. When I rode the bike it was sticking out so much that Im afraid it might poke someone or a dog. I ended up pounding the rod and bracket with a hammer. It did not go too well. I decided to get a big adjustable wrench instead and that work out okay. I fix it some what or at least it is better. The assemble took 2 hours (not including the rod problem). I have to look for the right allen wrench and the brake adjustment took the most time. The bike came with a missing screw on the brake handle so the front brake seem looser than the back brake.

Here is the good. The sit is comfortable unlike my old huffy bike that is made from metal frame. The bike is light because it is made from aluminium. I like the dual suspension, which make a trip nice. The price was excellent if you manage to get one at a discount. 4 stars due to the price.
Nice bike. ..................     On: 2006-12-03

hi, i just assembled my bike. Took about 2 hours to get it perfect (this include time to figure out.) But if you know what you are doing, it takes less than 30 min. I included my little instruction for those who might need it.
To set it up, you dont really need a manual because it is not so specific for this bike. You gonna need lots of difference sizes of L-keys and some small wrenches to tightend the screws. The bike comes mostly assembled, though.

Major parts to make sure are the brakes. You need to unscrew/screw and adjust those. Remember, everything can be taken apart. So, dont afraid to take those apart.
For the handle bar, all you need to do is take out the black rubber protective cover, and slide it in the tube of the bike. Then, using L-key, just tighten it. For the seat, you dont need any tools. Just slide it in and press the lever.
For the front wheel, take off the protective black rubber bar. Then unscrew the cables holding the brakes so that you can put in the wheel. After the wheel is in, you can put the brakes back. Make sure the brakes are on the rim and not on the tire. (everyone probably know this!)

I am only 5 foot 7 inches tall, so the bike is a little big for me. With the lowest seat settings, my inseam is less than 1 inch away from the bar. But its alright. Once i start riding, it doesnt make any differencce. I get used to it now and I can handle perfectly fine.

As always, Amazon shipping was super quick. No scratches or defects except a tiny dent in the handle bar.
good price for a decent bike     On: 2006-12-02

when i got the bike there was a couple of holes in the box and stuff. but there wasny any real damage except for the front wheel. it spins kinda loopsided so the brakes were hard to adjust. couldnt get the brakes cloes to the rim without it touching the breaks every so often cuz it was lop sided. even though the wheel is sorta jacked up, i like the bike because it rides pretty well. the gears are good except for first gear. when u put it into first it falls off the gears. so when ur going from 2 to 1 u got to turn it very slowly until it goes, not clicking it right away.when adjusting the brake and gear controls on the handle bar, the right gear was tightened with an allen wrencth too hard and i couldnt open it without stripping it. then i had to get my dad who is a handyman to get it out and switch it with a new bolt. bike is fun to drive and is worth the money(i got it for 60) but i think its well worth over 150. i would get this bike if u plan to ride around and stuff and not do serious bikeing with it.
Good bike, terrible components     On: 2006-12-01

Received my shinning new bike, excitement, opened the box, assembled the parts, inflated the tires, checked the chain, joy, mounted it for my first ride, emotion, put my feet on the pedals, fresh air, good weather at 75°F, happiness, started pedaling.... suddenly... loud CRACK!!!... WTF?... something fell off, pedals loosed, the ride stopped... now sadness, anger, rage.... damn!

What happened is that the Rear Derailleur (SRAM 3.0) simply broke for no reason. Im a 57, 185 lbs non-athletic couch potato and theres no way I could have caused this breaking by just pedaling. Check the images I uploaded of the broken derailleur. (Customers Images)

This is definitively a case of bad quality plastic components used in an expensive product. Ive seen cheaper bikes at local retailers (WMT, TGT, KMT) with better Shimano components.

Now, who I have to direct my complaints to?, Amazon?, Mongoose?, SRAM?
Whos going to respond for it?

Good bike for the money, easy to setup     On: 2006-12-01

I was surprised at how easy it was to put the bike together. Mostly everything is pre-assembled. Putting together the bike only took about 15 to 30 mins with the right tools. It probably will take about 1 to 2 hours to tune the brakes, pads and adjust the heights. Not a big deal for a nice bike.
Very nice bike     On: 2006-11-30

I got this bike during the Black Friday sale. The bike was shipped SUPER FAST and undamaged. Set-up was a snap...attach the front wheel, seat and handlebars...make a few minor adjustments here and there...and I was ready to hit the road. The ride is very nice, its fast and smooth. Oh yeah, and it looks awesome.
Ok for the price     On: 2006-11-29

as most here have said, it is a cheaper bike and that is what you should expect.

Mine came beat up too, box was full of holes and the bike was full of scratches but overall nothing more than cosmetic. It only took about 1/2 hour to assemble, but it took another 2 hours to get the shifting to work, and to align and true the wheels. I am not a bike guy but it was pretty easy to adjust the shifting and tweak the spokes to get the wheels straighter. If I had paid full price, I wouldnt have been happy, but for the $60 Black Friday deal, I can live with it.
product     On: 2006-11-24

this is a definate must, need to buy. I am very happy with this bike.
D     On: 2006-11-10

I thought this was an okay bike except for a minor problem. I had to keep tuning the gear shifters. But besides that little problem this is a good bike to own, I would highly recomend this to someone who is looking for a comfortable ride and a relaxing one at that.
Perhaps a good deal for the money.     On: 2006-11-02

I bought this item and ended up having to return it twice. The second time I just requested my money back. I gave it 3 stars because I think for some people this bike could be a good deal.

The first time I had to return it because the wheels were damaged in shipping. This is the only product that I have ordered from Amazon.com that has been packaged poorly. My guess is because pacific cycle packages it for shipping to them and they ship it straight out to customers without doing their own packaging.

When I got the replacement I felt I had received a good bike for the price. The gear shifters didnt work the greatest but I was able to get a feel for how to work them. The brakes were also finacky. The dual suspension was great, Ill never buy another mountain bike without dual suspension.

The kicker was when I hopped a small stream bed. The front T-bar that holds the front wheel bent back and the tire locked up against the frame causing the bike to abruptly stop and me to take a short trip over the handlbars and into the dirt. I think it is reasonable to expect a mountain bike with dual suspension to be able to stand up to a hop over a stream bed carrying a 160lb man.

I think this is a good, inexpensive bike for riding on trails and roads. The dual suspension also seemed to privide a smoother ride but from my understanding, the primary purpose of a dual suspension is enable the rider to go over moderately rough terrain with more stability and less strain on his or her body. This bike will not be able to stand up to even moderately rough terrain, I was lucky enough that this one broke on me two days before the return period expired otherwise Id be stuck with it.
great bike (Mongoose Domain 26-inch dual-suspension mtn bike)     On: 2006-08-11

I order this bike online from Amazon and less than 5 days I have recieved the bike in the box (2 boxes). The bike is a brand new and excellent condition nothing else is damaged which due to the shipment. This bike is very light weight about 35 pound or less after completely assymble and It is very easy to do assymbly too.
Great Bike     On: 2006-07-20

Received bike ahead of schedule, packing was great, bike undamaged. Assembly was a snap, no surprises, no problems. Bike fit was ideal, did minor adjustment to brake pads, seat, derailers, and bars + aired up tires to spec. Nothing unexpected. Bike rides great. For the price: more than I could have asked for. Great deal. Great service. Great product. Would recommend for anyone looking for a great all around bicycle. Love it.
Overall very pleased     On: 2006-06-26

The bike came well packaged and was easy enough to put together. I would recommend getting the bike fully tuned after putting it together or have a professional put it together unless you trust whoever partially assembled it before shipping. The chain sticks sometimes when you are trying to shift gears, but this hasnt given me too many problems and its not like the chain falls off, just if you are switching from 5 to 4 it doesnt switch right away sometimes. Overall, very pleased for the price. Oh and get a comfortable seat.
Getting what you pay for:     On: 2006-06-22

The only nice thing about this bike is its dual suspension. But, you can have that with most bike manufacturers. I believe that Mongoose has gone downhill in regards to the quality of their cycles. The brakes had to be fixed twice and the wheels replaced all in a period of two months.
Great bike, shipping was terrible     On: 2006-05-16

Unfortunatly, this bike came with two fist sized holes in it. One had bent the rear shifter, the other had slightly bent the front rim. The bike itself is fantastic, I am 5 foot 11 inches and its just a tad small for me, but it has a smooth ride. My only complaint is that the gear ratios are heavily biased torward uphill biking, which makes going around town a bit slower. I am dissapointed with amazons shipping but the bike is great all around, seems very durable, a pleasure to ride. I give it four stars because the shipping has made tuning this bike a very long and difficult process.
Mongoose Domain: Well worth the money     On: 2006-05-08

I bought this bike for my son (and yes, myself) to use when doing moderate/intermediate trails in Colorado. Colorado is well known as a cycling/active-outdoors kinda place so there are a ton of bike shops around and they all recommend getting the more expensive bikes (starting at $500 and going well up into the thousands). For my budget, spending a few hundred every few years instead of paying a few thousand up front was far more preferable. But because of the riding we wanted to do, I had to get something at least half way decent - not some Huffy or the like from our local Wally Mart. I am 511", my son is 57" so this bike (26" wheels, 18" frame) was perfect for us both. I also considered the more expensive Goosey bikes here on Amazon but their reviews were terrible so I decided on this.

Arrival:
First off, it arrived double boxed, about 4 days after it shipped on Amazon. The box was torn on one side with the pedal sticking out and naturally, a little worse for wear. A little disappointed, I opened the box expecting the worst but the damage was just cosmetic. You need a few tools and a few hours to put it together ... a lot of the parts are put into the box in reverse so that they could fit into a small space without getting damaged (the brakes/handles) and almost everything that came assembled was loose and required lubing/tightening. I am not by any means bike savvy but it took maybe 2 hours to put it together and get it adjusted right. Even though the manual is generic (covers a few bikes but not specific to any one), its pretty handy in getting it done correctly.

First ride:
The aluminum frame/wheels make the bike really light and the shifters are awesome. The bike held up well to basic dirt/mountain paths without any problems. The springs are still new so I guess they are stiffer than normal but the seat wasnt all that uncomfortable and I found the ride really good.

Conclusion:
I have only owned the bike for about a week now so I cant speak to longevity but will update my review if anything adverse happens. For the interim, the bike rides good and looks great. Well worth the money.

6 Month Later review:
The bike is still in good condition and has held up well to at least a half dozen trail rides (not counting road use). The suspension is still a bit stiff but getting better. Something to note: The brakes have needed to be adjusted twice .. (takes about 2 minutes each time) .. in the past 6 months. Once the chain came off and had to be put back on. Occasionally the gears slip but if you change down and up again while free wheeling, it gets back to normal. All of this seems very minor and normal use for any bike. And .. if that bike is only 130 bucks, its a bargain.
Good bike-for the money     On: 2006-05-02

For the price, youre really getting what you expect-not too cheap, not a luxury Trek. I only have 3 real complaints about the bike-
1) Like many other reviewers said, the bike is assembled poorly-I had to turn the brakes around, as they were angled up, and I would never have been able to use them like that.
2) The gears are a bit testy-sometimes when switching between gears the chain will fall off. I should note that this could be my bike only, and that it is likely just an adjustment issue (Ive never taken it to a shop yet), but certainly something worth mentioning.
3) The frame, which is thick, makes for some awkward positioning of accessories. My bike lock will only fit around my seat post, since there is no place thin enough on the frame to put it elsewhere. You cant have a long/big water bottle as it will scrape up against your tire when the suspension gives going over bumps.

Of course, for the fact that youre getting a full suspension, nice looking, 21-speed bike for well under $150, these are all tolerable. The only other issues tend to affect all bikes in the budget range-uncomfortable seat, poor initial construction, overall lack of features. I have put over 120 miles on it in the past two months, and its holding up just fine-for the money, its a great deal!
Great deal if you're not picky, but will need a little more investment     On: 2006-04-02

Ive had this bike for around 6 months now, and am happy with it. However, before buying, you should be prepared for a few things:

Yes, the bike is cheap, and with free shipping it is the best deal you could possibly get for a dual suspension, however, there are some hidden costs involved:

1) New seat - the seat given is really uncomfortable and is one of those quick releases, so if you live in a urban area, gotta get something a little more secure.

2) Tune up - If you know nothing about bicycles, like me, youre going to need someone to play with this one a bit for you. They do a very poor job assembling it, so there are little things here and there that need to be fixed. For instance, my back brake didnt work at all. There was nothing wrong with the break itself, but they guy at the shop said something about "drag" and whatever else, but they were able to fix it, along with other loose screws and misalignments.

The frame is a bit small. I am 511", and the bike is definetely small for me. However, it is bearable, and Im comfortable enough.

Also, if youre using for city riding, the most annoying thing about this bike is there is no convenient place to put the lock while riding. I typically have to hang it on the handlebar, which sometimes gets in the way. The oversized tubing is too oversized to place the lock holder anywhere.

Overall, though, I am very happy with the purchase. It is perfect for riding around the city. The suspension is solid enough to make going over pot holes and curbs comfortable, the ride is easy enough to go over moderate hills (like bridges), and wheels are sturdy enough to cut through parks. I say, if youre not picky, and are just looking for a good deal, this is the perfect bike if youre willing to put up with the imperfections.
Bike     On: 2006-03-11

It was easy to assemble, even if I still have to fix gears and brakes that were mounted upside down. I didnt use it yet because it was way too cold here in NYC.
Good Bike!!     On: 2006-02-12

I just finished assembling.. looks cool! I am no expert with bikes, but I feel that speed shift and duel suspension (front/rear) are working as expected. It may be a little early to comment on durability, but you cant expect a $500 bike for $140. My wife also felt comfortable riding it esp with the free Bells Gel fusion seat. Can you belive, I paid only ~$170 for bike + gear (helmet, 5 kryptonite lock and pump) + gel cushion + shipping.
Horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!     On: 2006-02-06

This bike is horrible. The front shocks dont even work, and neither the rear shocks. No wonder why its so cheap. For Christmas i got a Marin Rift Zone which is an amazing bike but it costs alot. But the Marin has Manitou front shocks, and Fox rear shocks with great disk brakes. If youre serious about mountainn biking like i am get a real full-suspension bike like a Marin,Iron Horse,Kona,or Santa Cruz.
Little things make a BIG difference     On: 2006-02-01

I would like to describe the wonderful riding experience, but I am waiting to correct an assembly problem.

The tiny 2.5 mm allen screw that keeps the shifter on the handlebar is stripped. I sent away for a product called "screwgrab." Im still waiting...........

Im willing to bet its a nice bike.
Model T of bicycles     On: 2005-11-27

First, this is a "branded" bike made by a firm called Pacific Cycle. Pacific Cycle mass produces bikes and sells them under a variety of names, including Mongoose, through variety of retailers. Thats not necessarily a bad thing; it just depends on what you need. This bike is perfect for riding around town. Its light, reasonably durable, and comfortable. Ive owned it (actually, I own the Walmart version which is virtually identical) for nearly 3 years and havent had any serious problems or defects. I primarily use it in an urban setting (roads, sidewalks, curbs, pot holes, etc), and occasionally take it through parks and bicycle trails. The bike excels at these uses, but I wouldnt recommend it to anyone looking for a serious, off-road/trail bike - it just isnt made to withstand that kind of stress. In short, if you want a real off-road bike, go to a bicycle shop and pay 400+ dollars, but if all you need is a bike to get around town then buy this one.
Not the best Bike     On: 2005-10-16

I have had this bike for over a month now. It seemed to be working well initially but i would not recommend it to anyone who is planning too ride the bike off-road. Th gears need to be tweaked.... one of the peddle broke ... literally .. split in two ... and i never dropped the bike or anything so cant say much about the quality... it is also heavy so dont expect to be biking uphill in this.

But if you want a bike to ride in flat terrain ... for a mile or so every day .. then its not bad.
Pretty Good Bike     On: 2005-10-14

Im happy with the bike just not to happy that it has a nice lil bang in the down tube from shipping
Don't buy if you're tall (male or female)     On: 2005-09-26

This bike was sent to me by a friend as a gift. Before I opened the box, I searched and searched and searched for the frame size, and it was nowhere to be found online, not even at the Mongoose website. So I HAD to open the box to find the model number and then call up to Pacific Bicycle Company, up in Wisconsin, to find out the frame size, which is 18 INCHES. And, since my inseam is around 32", this bike was too short for me by almost exactly 2", the length I had to pull the seatpost out further than the maximum recommended length, which is a dangerous thing to do. So, now my friend will probably have to pay for shipping BACK as a return when she didnt have to pay originally (super saver shipping), and she might not even get a full refund since I opened the mongoose box inside to check the manual for the frame size, which it didnt have anyway. So, if youre not so tall and long-legged like me, this bike seems pretty cool. I wouldve loved to have kept it. Its pretty and to get full suspension for anything under $200 is great.
what the !f     On: 2005-09-20

bike is terrible but looks cool amd came at a good price ?? the seat is way too uncomfortable !!!!! rear brakes have come undone 3 times so far ??!!!! bike gets loose at major points must tighten on a weekly basis handlebars seat post etc,,, would not but again in the future ??? should get a refund or some kind of credit !!!!!!!!!!!!11
Great Bike for the money!!     On: 2005-09-08

I was going to give it 4 stars as I had to change the seat but thats my fault for buying a mans bike and Im a woman! Its a very comfortable ride, seat withstanding, and was just what I was looking for! Nice and sturdy and very easy to put together!
Hard to imagine that this is less than $200.     On: 2005-09-01

When I was a kid I was extremely angry at my father because he would not buy me a Mongoose dirt bike. I guess I still have a bit of a grudge because 20 years later I decided to finally get my Mongoose. :)

While this isnt a bike that I would choose to scale Denali in (Lets be serious. I am not going to scale Denali on any bike), it is a tremendous bike for the price.

It came double boxed and was in great shape. I only had to do a few simple steps and I was riding. I did have to adjust the brakes and gears a bit, but I dont know much about bikes and it was really easy.

The bottom line is that this bike is easy to ride, looks cool, and doesnt cost much.
Excellent bike for the price     On: 2005-08-29

The bike came double boxed with not a scratch on it. Had some difficulty with putting it together due to the fact I did not have any hex wrenches that big (8mm and 11mm are needed) but a quick trip to Wal-Mart solved this problem (oh the wrench set was $0.99). I pumped up the tires and was on my way!

The bike handles great and have no problems with the performance. I will definately buy another one of these for my wife (or give her this one so I can have the newer one!)

Unhappy :-(     On: 2005-08-14

Unhappy that there were many scratches on the frame upon arrival and on such a large purches its hard to return. Also very unhappy with the grip shifters not working properly and needing to be adjusted before being used.
Great Bike For the Price     On: 2005-08-11

came double boxed, not a scratch on it. easy to put together, but the handlebar needed to be readjusted, which took less than 5 minutes. i would recommend though, that before you start to really ride it, would be to clean the gears and chain with a good degreaser, and relube it all. mine came with alot of grit on the gears, but it was easily fixed.
About What I Expected For The Price     On: 2005-08-08

With no tax and free shipping, its a bargain. Certainly wont compete with a $500 mountain bike, but its great for riding around my somewhat hilly neighborhood. Bike has a good appearance, comes shipped in double packaging for protection. NOTE: the factory installed the handlebars at an incorrect angle. Nothing in the instructions said to fix it, but you figure out pretty quickly that you need to rotate the handlebars for the gear shifters to be in the right position.
Somewhat unhappy with purchase     On: 2005-08-07

First off, I was happy when I noticed the dual-boxed shipping that was done to help keep the bike from getting scratched. Then, after pulling the bike out of the box, I noticed some nice scrapes on the fork of the bike from where the handle bars were hanging when it was shipped. Also, on further inspection, I found some other paint scrapes on the back of the body as well. Also, after placing the front wheel on and checking if it spun straight, I noticed that it was way off. Basically, it wobbles. Fixing this either requires a trip to a bike store, or purchasing a spoke wrench to fix it myself if I understand correctly. This shouldnt have come like that in my opinion. This may get shipped back to amazon at this rate. Also spent an hour trying to get the shifter adjusted so it would work in all 21 gears. I appreciate that most of it was preassembled but come on. At least do it right.
Mongoose 26 inch domain aluminum full suspension bike     On: 2005-08-06

Package came extremely fast. Bike was easy to put together. The suspension is great. It is a well made bike for the price
Good sturdy Bike     On: 2005-08-02

its an amazing bike and I am pretty happy with the purchase... would have given it 5 stars except that it requires allen keys and a spanner for assembly which took me over a week to get as I dont have a car ... so if you are planning to just get a bike and start riding .. try the nearest target store .. or if you want quality .. get this one .. little expensive but trusty bike frm mongoose ..

Great Value!     On: 2005-07-29

I was very happy with my purchase. The bike came in a double box and did not have a scratch on it. I found it was easy to assemble and only needed a quick brake adjustment and air in the tires for me to be off and riding. The aluminum frame makes the bike light and the shifting was smooth. This is a great value for the price!
Sharp Ride!     On: 2005-07-27

I was looking for a resonably priced dual suspension bike and the Domain was the ticket (this is the second bike Ive bought recently from Amazon since I gave my other one to my brother). Ive been pretty happy with this bike overall. The aluminum frame is lightweight, and you dont find many bikes with SRAM parts at this price, so its shifts easily. I also noticed that the rims are aluminum, which is great for keeping the rust away. The rear shock is good for taking on potholes too (or rocks, if you need to).
I had a Mongoose BMX bike when I was a teenager, and it looks like they make a make a really nice mountain bike too.
First Item I Ever Sent Back to Amazon     On: 2005-07-22

Needless to say this bike was a dissapointment. The price was great, and it arrived very quickly, but things went down hill from there.

First the handle bar breaks, shifters, and handles were all assebled backwards. It became evident there that the person in China who put the bike in the box had never ridden a bicycle. This was minor as it only took about 20 minutes of work to get it corrected.

I then review the manual so I can adjust the gear systems and I realize the pictures in the manual dont match the bicycle. A call to the Mongoose customer service reveals that they have one generic manual for all the bikes they sell. Needless to say the mongoose customer service response was for me to read the manual.

So I air up the tires and decide at that price I could work through the gear problems. A short ride and I store the bike in the garage overnight. I go out the next morning and both tires are flat due to the extremely poor quality tires. Needless to say my next call was to Amazon to pick the bike up.

I went out and bought a Giant brand bike and no problems.
