More Information

just what I needed     On: 2008-06-30

it is great! all the features I needed in a simple cyclocomputer. Easy to install and the computer can be easily popped out form the cradle any time I leave the bike.
Great Product     On: 2008-06-30

I have had this unit for about two months. Very easy to install and set up. Functions flawlessly and has all the information on it that I need. I dont see how anyone could go wrong for the price here.
Good Computer     On: 2008-05-12

I have enjoyed this computer. Lot of information on the screen, and I really like having the temperature. No complaints.
Displeased     On: 2008-05-02

Planet Bike Protégé 9.0 9-Function Bike Computer with 4-Line Display and TemperatureIf you want simple, this is not the one. You will need a physicist with a graduate degree, a monkey with twleve hands and a great deal of luck to decipher the directions. I plan on drilling a hole in it and using it for a washer. All I wanted to do was count my miles. Most displeased!
Great item poor free shipping trick...     On: 2008-04-05

Offer for free shipping was a trick to get more products purchased then charged shipping that made the price for itmes not a bargain after all!!!
Functional all-purpose computer     On: 2008-04-03

Pros:
Supports 2 bikes or wheel sizes, separate odometer for each
Easy to install (took about 15 minutes, but I have done these before).
Useful information all on one screen

Cons:
Tedious to set (but still relatively easy)
Font smaller since everything is on the same screen

This is a great bike computer, providing a lot of useful information all on one screen. My older computer only provided one bit of information per screen, and you had to keep hitting the button to see everything. I also love that this has a thermometer to indicate the outside temperature.

This is a great computer, and is a must have for any gadget enthusiast or anyone who is data driven. I like to know how my ride time improves as I build strength, what the morning/afternoon temperature is, and how fast I am riding, along with all the other data provided by the computer.
Convenient and safe     On: 2008-03-29

Ive used many cyclocomputers over the past 25 years, but when it came time to purchase one for my 12 year old daughters first "real" road bike the Planet Bike Protege stood out. The multi-line display eliminates the button clicks necessary to view information on other units, which makes it much easier to use for a beginner. This feature aids safety as well, since the rider need not reach out to push one or more buttons to access information.

This is the third unit I have purchased -- I have one on my wifes recumbent and my 14 year old sons road bike as well. From a design perspective, I believe the wire from the receiving unit to the mount is a bit thick and more difficult to work with, making a clean installation somewhat more challenging. Also, I have always been a fan of Avocets excellent multipulse pickup system and I prefer it to all the single pulse units on the market.

Aside from those two minor quibbles, I think the Protege is an excellent value among cyclocomputers, offering all the key information a rider might want in an easy to use format and at a very competitive price.
Great product     On: 2008-02-12

Great bike computer. Easy to use, lots of functions on the screen. Especially like the ease of changing functions without having to press a button and the screen is easy to read. About the only thing that isnt perfect about this is the temperature gauge. It isnt very accurate in the sun. Direct sunlight elevates the reading about 10 degrees above actual temp. But overall, it is an excellent product at a great value.

Planet Bike Protégé 9.0 9-Function Bike Computer with 4-Line Display and Temperature

This is the second Protege 9.0 that I have bought (for a second bike). The first one has been used for about 1000 miles and is great. I have enjoyed the accuracy and ease of use. I really like having the temperature registering on the computer. The set-up was easy and installation took less than 15 minutes.

Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer     On: 2007-11-26

The only problem I had was that I purchased it to track my performance on my bike on a trainer, one that has the front wheel stationary. The wire to the little sensor that mounts on the bike wont reach to the back wheel. Even if it did, the sensor can be no more than 2-3 mm from the magnet that it reads. That only happens with the magnet on a spoke of the front wheel, and the sensor on the front fork, both mounted close to the hub. Off the trainer, the computer works fine.
Excellent     On: 2007-10-10

This is an excellent bike odometer/speedometer for my wifes Greenspeed GT3. It is easy to install on the front, fits nicely on the mirror mount (the cycle has no horizontal handlebars in sight of the rider) and the sensor can mount on the bottom of the mirror mount with a small chip of wood as a spacer to bring it close to the wheel magnet.
One cant beat the price for all those functions, either. Calibration was not difficult, and the reset function works perfectly. I have one on my GTR for the same reasons.
Great Display     On: 2007-10-01

I recommend the Planet Bike Protege 9.0 bike computer. It is easy to use and has a large display. At this price, getting temp display is rare so its an added bonus.
Useless piece of failed equipment     On: 2007-09-26

This unit has a load of features at a great price, but theyre all irrelevant because it doesnt work. It took 5 programming attempts before it finally finished a program cycle with resetting in the middle of entering all the information ( tire size, odometer, times, etc) . On the first run of the bike, it did a complete reset of all information, this repeated a number of times. After several more unsuccessful reset attempts, it quit responding entirely. I was careful to follow instruction slavishly, and am aware that there is a "reset" function which should only actuate when held 3-4 seconds. It happened to actuate on even the slightest use of the button before failing completely. A set of reviews on another website were for more scathing than the ones listed here - I wish I had not bothered to waste time on this piece of equipment.
Great budget bike computer     On: 2007-09-22

Like others have reported, the thermometer only reads correctly in the shade. The only other problem is that when I ride in the rain, which I try to avoid, it turns off. That said, it comes back and works great when dried off. Everything else is awesome. It has a really nice big display, so you can easily read everything and get a lot of data at once. The whole unit acts as the button to toggle between screens, so that is easy to do as well. This thing has taken a lot of abuse and kept going. Combine the great display, ease of use, super price and thermometer that does work well in shade and the Planet Bike Protege 9.0 is a real deal.

Cool stuff     On: 2007-09-10

I have tried few others before arriving to this one. This item really rocks - everything you need nothing you dont in an elegant form. The temperature perk is something that I really liked. Multiline display is very clear and the contrast is great. Pretty sleak and easy to carry around
Best Design I've used     On: 2007-08-20

Ive owned several including cateye, vetta, sigma and I have to say this is the best design Ive seen. Ive paid over $100 for one, and for the price ($22)it is even more outstanding. Simple to use, well made with a sturdy cable. Rode in the rain yesterday - no problem!

It was unclear from some of the reviews how it works. Most of the display except the bottom line reads all the time. It slides forward in the bracket (spring loaded) to toggle thru the 4 versions of the bottom display. If you hold it forward for a few seconds it resets. Thats it. No buttons. As noted in some reviews you need to be careful not to reset it accidently if you hold it too long
Great Value!!!     On: 2007-06-10

I bought this computer about a month and a half ago. Ive used in every type of weather from sunshine to downpours and it works great. Excellent product for the price!
Johnny D from NY City     On: 2007-06-04

I have had this computer for two weeks now and am extremely satisfied with it. I have not had any problems with the thermometer and find it to be both accurate and rugged. I have been really using it every day and find no bad things to say. I must admit that I have not rode in the rain or any inclement weather. Definitely, well worth it!
Pretty Good     On: 2007-05-30

Thermometer is kind of gimmiky, because any time it is in sunlight, your reading is way off. But when it is partly cloudy out, it is pretty accurate. The features it has are nice, and I like the push button feature. I had a protege 5 before this, and although it is supposed to be "weather proof", it was not. I have not been in the rain with this one. The wiring on this is heavy duty; it wont rip out and is not fragile.
Works just fine     On: 2007-04-25

I have one of these on my Bianchi Brava and it works just fine. The only issue I have with this model is that the temperature reading is not very reliable. Setup was easy and installation no problem at all.
All I want and need at a gr8 price     On: 2007-04-24

Whats not to like? Bike data, time, temp, low cost, this unit has performed very well. So well I bought another one for my mountain bike. My road bike has had one for 2 years and over 4,000 miles. This spring the display started to fade in and out... still functional, but almost a slow dim/regular warning. So I bought a common CR2032 battery, changed it, reset the data (make sure you copy your mileage if you want to re-enter it into the newly erased unit. The battery change wipes it out) and all was well.

Regarding the temperature reading, its fairly accurate when NOT in direct sunlight, but goes bonkers when in the sunlight. This is more comical than anything... youve GOT to understand how a thermometre works and take into account the environment this unit operates in. Plus its not exactly an expensive unit... the temperature is a bonus, not the primary feature! (DOH!)

Im glad its there, but Im not really counting on it for critical readings. Am much happier with the units features, the clock, etc. Switching displays requires a simple tap... not a long push (will reset data from the current ride.)

All I want at a cant beat price!

Cycle Computer     On: 2007-01-09

I purchased this item for my son who rides to graduate classes evry day. He was thrilled with it.
Barely acceptable     On: 2006-09-25

I bought this unit because I wanted a temperature read out, and I didnt want to spend a bundle for a wireless cyclometer -- I found no other choices meeting these requirements. I think this bike computer has some serious drawbacks. 1. Dont get caught out in the rain. When the computer gets wet, the display disappears, it stops working and doesnt return to normal for hours. 2. To switch between screens you press the unit from the bottom, but if held for a second, this zeros out the current ride data. I found the computer sometimes zeroed out the data, when I only wanted to switch screens -- most annoying. 3. After about a year the display faded, and after I put in a new battery, many of the segments in the numerals never recovered properly and remained dim.

If, like me, you want temperature information on your rides it appears this the best available at the price.
Excellent Computer at a Bargain Price     On: 2006-05-08

Theres a lot to like about this cycle computer. The "buttonless" design works well and allows a large display with most everything youll need on one very readable page. I was especially pleased to find that, unlike my old CatEye, you can preset an odometer reading. I was also pleased to find that it has a 2 bike capability. You set wheel circumfrence and can preset an odometer readings for each. A single button on the back toggles between bikes. All thats needed is another wire/sensor harness which is relatively cheap. Modes are selected by pressing up on the entire computer and will show an odometer reading for the selected bike or an accumulated reading for both. The clock feature is also welcome.

The only negative is the temperature reading, which proved to be wildly inaccurate. I think sunshine causes a greeen-house effect inside the sealed unit. Whatever, it reads much higher than actual air temperature although tucked away in the garage the reading is reasonably accurate. Temperature reading wasnt a big issue with me anyway.

I couldnt be happier with it!

Amost Great     On: 2006-04-04

Everything works well and is well designed about this computer except the thermometer. It is only accurate in the shade. When it hits the sun it will be 5 to 10 degrees too warm. Otherwise having so many functions on one screen is wonderful. Everthing else works flawlessly! For the price, you can overlook the temp problem and park the bike in the shade to get good readings or use the readings for better war stories.

Would be nice to create a wireless version and make the sensor less sensitive to sun.
