I have one of these I carry in my seatbag on long rides. Its just the thing to prevent a crime of opportunity -- I use it to secure my bike to a fixed object when I need to run into a store or the restroom for a few minutes.
It is NOT a good lock if you are going to leave your bike in a less than secure area for an extended period of time. Im pretty sure it would yield to some casual attention from a bolt cutters in just a second or two.
I saw a recent recommendation that a similar item would make a good childrens lock. I guess thats true if you dont really care whether your kids bike gets stolen. My advice? Get your kid a U-lock AND a cable to secure the wheels and teach them about the real world. Kryptonites combination U-lock and cable have worked pretty well for my offspring.
I would give this item 5 stars except for one thing -- the combination is set at the factory and cant be reset. OnGuard makes a similar item which I prefer. It is bulkier and heavier, but with theirs you can change the combination.
