Needed a full feature helmet for commuting     On: 2008-05-26

I needed the Metropolis with all the accessories, and this was my last chance to get one, as they are discontinued. The helmet is easy to adjust, and has useful accessories like a rain cover, winter kit, and mirror visor. I will definitely use all these accessories, as I commute all year round.
The best!!!     On: 2008-01-15

I am a year-round commuter in New England. This is far and away the best looking and most comfortable helmet Ive ever used. Perfect fit (easily adjustable), well vented, rounded design makes it safer. Like my B17 saddle, its a classic, an enduring design.
Nice Helmet with lots of optional equipment     On: 2007-09-23

Ive had my Metropolis for 2 weeks now. Its everything I hoped it would be.
I love the rear light attachment strap. It make the helmet a little heavy but I feel safer with the light up high on my head instead of down on my seat.
I also bought the rear view mirror. I have a handlebar mounted Cat Eye mirror which provides a generous field of view. In comparison, the helmet mirror is very small. This has taken some time to get used to but the more I use it the better gets. Regarding how it wont work with road handlebars, I have a road bike and the only adjustment I have to make is to move the mirror up higher toward the visor. That moves it out of my forward line of vision but keeps it in a usable position.
I will be looking into the winter kit next...
Great Helmet     On: 2007-07-15

Nicely made, appears of very good quality. Good color selection and great price on Amazon. Its comfortable, and the directions for adjustment that come with it are easy to follow. It has a nice little slot on the back for a light with a clip. Nice. Its a least twice what youll pay for the cheap ones, but then again, how much is your head worth to you?
Bell Faction is a better commuting helmet, for less $     On: 2007-06-20

The Bell Metropolis sounded like the ideal commuting helmet: you can put on a rear-view mirror, a rain cover, and an LED taillight. In reality, none of these accessories came with the helmet, they are optional accessories. Then I saw that the mirror attaches to the visor, not to the helmet. No problem if you ride a recumbent or use upright handlebars, but with drop handlebars you cant use the visor (you cant see where youre going) and so you cant use the mirror.

In contrast, Bells Faction helmet is half the price and you can put a mirror on it. It has only a few small vents so you dont need a rain cover. In the winter I cover the vents with tape and fill them with foam. Plus the Faction comes down further on the back and sides of your head so it should be safer. And the shell is thicker.
The perfect commuter helmet

I like this helmet. Its relatively subdued in appearance compared to most other bike helmets. Its round in back, which is safer in case of an accident. But most of all, I like the accessories which work so well. The rain shield snaps on in a minute once you have it stretched. The mirror provides a fairly wide field of view, and folds away when not needed. However, the best feature is the strap for mounting a blinkie light to the rear of the helmet. Brilliant!! I dont know why nobody did this before. I cant imagine riding at night(which I do every day) without the extra blinkie. Having one at head height helps to identify the rider as a human being. Love the helmet. Accessories, especially the rain shield, can be a bit hard to find, so buy a couple.

UPDATE---4/9/07

I was hit by a truck on 4/5/07, while commuting to work. I dont remember much about the hit, because I was unconscious for a while, but heres what Ive been told happened. I was riding along my normal route, which is a 45mph 2 lane. I only have 1/2 mile on this road before I enter the lightly trafficked suburbs, so I just grin and bear it. On this day, I was hit from behind by a truck. To be accurate, the drivers side mirror HIT ME IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD. I awoke on the ground, bleeding from my elbow, bruised and sore---but no broken bones and NO CONCUSSION. My helmet has a nice big crack in the rear at the 7 oclock position, but better the helmet than my skull. Good helmet, and the fact that the Metro has more rear coverage than a race helmet helped.
Great Helmet

Im 38 years old and have never worn a bike helmet so buying one was a challenge all by itself. Trying to find a helmet that didnt look completely rediculous was even more callenging. This Bell Metro helmet is a great fit, looks good and was a great price.

I highly reccomend this helmet

I give this 4 stars because 5 would entail perfection and since nothing is perfect, this helmet is about as close as you can get.

I realy like the helmet. It is light in weight-fits well- and doesnt flop or slide around. The visor is handy by blocking out some of the sun. I recommend it.

As a recumbent trike rider I needed a helmet that didnt have the elongated shape as it would interfere with my neck-rest. The Bell Metropolis fitted the use just as perfect as could be. I often change the head covering I wear depending on the weather, and the Metropolis helmet adjusts very fast and easy with the turn of a dial. I would recommend this helmet to anyone that wants a practical helmet for recumbent riding or commuting on a bicycle where aerodynamics isnt important.
