After five plus years of toting around a giant diaper bag, I decided it was time to share the joy! Seriously though, after my 5 year old son became fascinated by his fathers Camelbak, I thought it would be a neat gift for him to have his own. After all, he plays pretty hard in the hot Texas sun and we will soon be making lots of day trips to the areas state parks. The Camelbak Mini Mule would be useful and make him feel like a big guy. Even though I thought it might be too big and cumbersome for my 3.5 year old daughter, I went ahead and got her one too because otherwise Im sure she would always be trying to borrow her brothers. Id rather not deal with the constant struggle and figured she could just grow into it. Well, they both love them and it even adjusts to fit my daughter well. (For my daughter, Im very careful to not overload it and generally dont fill the water to full capacity.) They both love the storage and carry their essentials. There are three storage spaces aside from the one in which the Camelbak bladder is stored. There is a reasonable amount of space in the main compartment, I daresay enough for a medium-sized persons summer weight change of clothes (great for water park or swimming days) and a small lunch. The front has a smaller space for a snack or whatever other items a 5-12 year old might see as necessities (our kids use it for their Leapsters to play with on the road). In between the main compartment and the smaller front compartment is an expandable open storage area, a good place for clothes once wet. My daughter likes to put her small doll in it. As I describe all this storage, I dont want to make it seem like this pack is excessively large because its really a very nice, compact size for kids to carry. Its just well-designed. It holds a lot without taking up a lot of space.
I am very impressed with this Camelbak and know that the kids will get years of use out of it. My husbands is going strong after years...I cant remember how many so a long time, definitely making it worth the price. I feel certain the Mini Mules will prove their value over time as well. When my almost 2 year old is ready to resist chewing the valve off, he will be getting his own also and then maybe I can finally have a cute purse again! For day trips, Ill be getting myself the Camelbak Day Star based on my own observations of the usefulness of my kids packs.

Camelbak Packs are the greatest. Bought 2 for the kids and they work perfectly, and have tons of space. Ive tried others, and hated them.
Id never buy anything other than a Camelbak. On: 2008-01-01
The Mini MULE is the perfect size for my kids. We hike and geocache frequently and the Mini MULE carries enough water for a couple of hours and has space for snacks and swag.
I bought these as Christmas presents and weve used them five times over the holidays break to hike, bike and geocache. They love having their water and snacks at hand instead of waiting for me to remove my pack and distribute.
If you plan on short hikes and outdoor outings, this is the perfect size. I have four kids six to eleven and they really like the Mini MULE. Camelbak is a great product. I have two other ones adult sized I use for mountain biking. I recommend paying the little extra for the Camelbak. They last and dont leak.
