![]() Schwinn 17-Function Bike Computer By: Schwinn Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 43 More Information CHECK YOUR MAGNET ALIGNMENT! My condolences to the poor folks who trashed the Schwinn computers. I bought a 12 function unit and got it to work right away ... UNTIL I moved it by a few spokes to balance out a reflector. Then ... it STOPPED WORKING ... TOTALLY. Being an engineer, I scratched my head for a few minutes while analyzing the problem and then laughed. I moved the magnet about 1/4 inch down the spoke and it started working fine again. The problem is in basic electromagnet physics. If you manage to mount the magnet extremely close to the MIDDLE of the sensor bar, the generated electric pulse will null out and it will look like your unit is dead no matter how close you get the magnet to the sensor. Just move the magnet away from the middle of the sensor bar ... closer to either end ... and your sensor will have excellent sensitivity and you will have a great working little gadget for a miniscule price. This would be a great present for a kid, except that its better for them to be paying more attention to what they are doing than watching the speedometer. Only 4 stars because unfortunately the Schwinn people dont support these products, and the web address the give you for the manufacturer is dead. The "wheel factor" table in the manual is only approximate ... measure the circumference of your wheel in millimeters for best accuracy. Good luck and happy cycling ... thumb your nose at every gas station you pass by! Art, Carlisle PA Great Value This device works great and its only $9. It has speed which always shows on the screen plus you can display the odometer, a distance meter to the 1/100 of a mile, trip timer, temperature, average speed, maximum speed, calories, or fat calories. It has a couple of other features which display at all times such as whether you are increasing speed or descreasing which seem somewhat worthless sense I pretty much am aware of that anyway. It also shows a plus or minus sign to tell you if you are traveling above or below your average speed which for some reason I like. Additionally you can set it to scan where it will display each item for a few seconds then move on to the next. I like the fact that it pops right off the mounting bracket so I can take it with me to review the data after a long ride. I did notice that one review mentioned you cannot reset things such as distance, calories, etc. All items are easily cleared. The device has two buttons. The right button allows you to scoll through the functions. The left button when held for about two seconds resets that function to zero. So before each trip or each day I reset distance, calories, average speed, etc. That way you can keep track for trip, a day, a week, or whatever you desire. The device shuts down when you stop so you dont have to worry about shutting it off. Installation is simple. No tools required, except maybe a pair of pliers to pull the supplied wire ties nice and tight. The only thing that is a bit tricky is that the sensor which mounts on the fork and the magnet which attaches to a spoke need to be close together. The instructions say 1mm. Thats only about 1/32 of an inch. Mine works at about 1/8 of an inch. You need to slide it up or down the spoke/fork to get the correct clearance. Also be careful when entering the "wheel factor" which is just the circumference of the wheel on centimeters. I would recommend you calculate your own instead of using the chart or at least verify their chart. There are 25.4mm per and inch times the "outside" diameter in inches times pi which is 3.14159. The factors listed are correct but somewhat confusing. This number needs to be right or all the information displayed is wrong. Inexpensive yet high quality gadget If you are looking for an inexpensive way to keep track of your bike mileage, or to see just how fast youre coasting down that big hill, this is the device for you. Installation wasnt as difficult as some of the commentary for this item described it to be, and this is the first one Ive ever installed. As long as you follow the directions, youll be okay. Make sure you keep the instruction manual, as you will probably need the wheel diameter codes provided on the manual when you replace the battery (all data is lost when the battery goes). As far as functionality, it has more features than my Specialized Turbo Computer, and is even backlit. This Schwinn computer is installed on my girlfriends Schwinn MTB, and we tested it by pedaling alongside each other and the readings were exactly the same. It offers a programmable "maintenance reminder" that tells you when you should have your bike serviced (choice of 200, 400, or 600 mile intervals). The air temperature display is a nice touch, but it may suffer from a sort-of "greenhouse effect," as it seemed to display a warmer temp. than actual, but it wasnt too far off. It also offers a "scan" function, so you can see all the functions as you ride, and it powers up when you start rolling and powers down when the bike is idle after five minutes. As long as you follow all installation and programming instructions to the letter, you will (or should) get lots of use out of it. Bike Computer I like the fact that this bike computer is larger than what I expected. It is self explainatory to put together. The best feature is that the computer turns off when its not being used. It reactivates when detecting motion. Beyond Satisfied This bike computer, for the price, is by far the best on the market. How do I know? Because there is no other bike computer that boasts a name brand company, has as many features, and costs as little as this one! I made sure to read all the reviews on Amazon before I purchased this, and I find it disheartening that I was almost swayed to *not* buy it. Fortunately, I read between the lines of all the negative comments and figured their age and/or grammar explained why they had difficulties with the device. To start, almost everyone is correct in stating its difficult to install; honestly, it is! The instructions suggest a 1mm distance between the magnet and the sensor, which basically means: as close as you can get it without the two pieces hitting! To achieve this, the task takes a considerable amount of fiddling, but once you find the right spot on the fork and spoke to where they come closest without hitting, youre golden. I spent about 10 minutes doing this. After the magnet and sensor were on, the setup of the computer was a breeze. It asked for wheel diameter (which is required if you want accurate readings of speed, distance, etc), age, weight, time settings, etc. If you read the instructions, it will explain how to set each of these values. I want to address a few of the complaints on this page. The first was from a young man who said he was riding 60 mph. Your problem: you didnt set the correct wheel diameter! The instructions provide you a handy chart to tell you what code to type in based on the corresponding diameter. Now, if you dont know what a diameter is, or dont have the intelligence to look it up online, you probably shouldnt be using this computer in the first place. If your wheel is 26" and you set it to 15", yes, you will not have the correct and accurate display of your speed! I read another review that said he couldnt figure out what buttons to push. Answer: READ THE DIRECTIONS! The directions tell you what to push, for how long, and when. They do this for all displays and all features. If you cant figure that out, I dont know what else to tell you. Honestly, there are 2 buttons, are you that stupid? I read another review that said distance traveled couldnt be reset, nor could the calories or fat burned. WRONG! Yet again, people fail to actually *read* the instructions, and have the nerve to come online and submit a negative review. There are 7 displays that are shuffled with the *right* button. The *odometer* display does not reset, because its just that, an odometer. Do you reset your car odometer, too? What youre looking for is the *tripmeter* display. The tripmeter can be reset by holding the *left* button for 2 to 3 seconds. When you reset the tripmeter, you also reset the trip timer, and the average speed value which was set during your previous trip. To reset the calories burned or fat burned, go to that feature display, and hold the left button for 2 to 3 seconds. Simple enough? In summary: this computer is accurate in all its features if you read the instructions and input the correct wheel diameter. Speed, distance traveled, average speed, trip timer, temperature, and everything else, I have found to be 100% accurate. I checked the speeds against a driver and the temperature against a 3rd party thermostat. Since Ive only used this product for a couple weeks, I cant tell you how durable or whats its longevity will be, but if the features and accuracy mean anything, I should be using this computer for a long time. Quick note to everyone who set this thing up wrong and feels foolish for complaining: if you input the wrong diameter, press both buttons down at the same time for 3 seconds and it will reset the whole device so you can input data from scratch. If your speedometer is reading out "0.0" while you ride, you have the sensor and magnet setup wrong. Try to align the magnet with the arrow next to the "Sensor" text. The key to having a pleasurable experience with this bike computer is to read the instructions. If you dont feel like reading instructions, dont buy this. If you feel you can bare with the idea of reading a bit and want a great piece of hardware at the lowest price on the market, BUY this device. keeps dying bought this product last year to put on my motored bike. The first trip I took was great told me top speed and distance and everything was great. I went to turn it on for the next ride and I had to start all over again putting in the wheel size, my height, weight, etc, etc. after 5 rides it refused to work. for $20 I guess you get what you pay for - I think the battery gets shaken loose inside unit. pay a few more dollars for something that is higher quality. Awesome! I love the multiple functions this trip computer gives me. I tend to leave it at speed and temperature. I now know how fast I am going, and be able to better estimate my arrival time. Highly recommended purchase for any bike. Best Investment For My Bike This product ROCKS!!!! The only thing is, since Ive received and installed it I ride everyday. Its addicting. The installation was easy and the functions work great. Ive put over 300 miles on my bike in under a month. I went from riding about 2-3 miles a day to between 10-15 miles a day 6 times a week. Liked it so much I purchased this one for my wife :) What a deal! Although this model is not wireless, I was surprised that it was so easy to set up and has so many functions for the price. I ran this computer on one of my bikes while using a 75.00 Topeak wireless model on another bike and the Schwinn was just as accurate. The extra functions such as calories burned were also a nice feature. Unless this breaks early, it cant be beat for the price. Great item for the price Easy to install and keeps great track of how miles ridden. The speedometer is very accurate as well. Dont be frightened by other posts, if you are some what intelligent and can screw in a light bulb. Then this is the product for you. Take care everybody Good but has a flaw Ive had this for more than half a year now. Works ok. The problem I encountered is that the battery is a bit loose. So, if you accidentally drop the computer the battery will move, will stop making contact and will reset the computer. All your stored data ( max. speed, dist. traveled) will be lost. This happened every time I dropped it. It never happened in another situation. So I had to put some rubber between the lid and the battery to hold it in place. It can display kilometers too, a big plus for me. Just what you need All the things you need are here. And at a great price. Sure it could have more but you should be riding your bike not playing games while your riding. Great product at great price I like this product so much I brought a second one within days of purchasing the first one. The first one I put it on my bike, the second one I put it on my electric scooter. In both cases it is simple to install and work great. I only use speed and distance function. FIVE STARS without a doubt!! Bang for buck..this cyclometer cannot be beat! For $10 you have a small, easily mounted device that tells you all you need to know. But, lets face it..a running MPH is what all cyclists care about as they ride. This thing does it all as well...odometer, temperature..sure..stuff no one really needs in the real world, even has a back light for night riding. What more could you need? You might have to "fiddle" with the spoke sensor to get a good pickup..but they are all that way. However, once you have adjusted your spoke sensor, it stays true no matter how many bumps and jumps you do. Its a cool little machine that is WAY worth the money...I cant imagine anyone paying $30-50 for anything else..wasted cash. Buy one of these things before Schwinn figures out how good they are and jacks up the price! Good riding! Read on!!!!! Just recently installed this on my bike (well my boyfriend did). At first I thought I got a dud cause it wasnt reading when we turned the wheel. Turned out my boyfriend installed it incorrectly. So when he corrected it, it worked so well! And I took it for a spin for a few minutes and it worked so well I was elated!!!!! The only problem with it I would say is that you have to reset it everytime if you want a fresh reading on it just like in a car. But since I dont, then I just let it read on so I know how many miles my bike is riding for its life. If I want my progress, Ill write it down. No big deal. Thats how you track progress anyway. Cheap \ly made product The lcd malfunctioned on its first use and became unreadable. Fresh batteries didnt help. The Schwinn name isnt what it use to be. Schwinn17 Function Bke Computer Schwinn 17 Function Bike Computor. This allows me to follow my bike riding for Distance and MPH. This Computor has other functions but I use the MPH and Distance function for my needs. As soon as I saw the video on the sight I thought I could install this and enjoy. As soon as I received it I installed it and it worked right off. Great purchase and I would recommend it on this sight for the money and proformance. "FIVE STARS" [...] bill Unless you're putting it on a $2,000 bike, you'll like it. I own 5 of these. Bought my first two because I wanted a backlight for my night rides. They performed quite well. I used the EXACT measurement of my wheel circumference that pro riders do (placing a dot of paint on the tread of a properly inflated wheel and measuring the distance of one full revolution in millimeters with me on the bike) and these $10 speedos held their own. They even match up well with GPS readings. I decided then to keep the uniformity and bought three more for my other rides... all $300+ bikes. It must be noted that it is necessary to align the sensor and magnet rather closely, but thats a basic rule for all speedos. Bad Batch? I bought this product and this first time I used it worked great, but the second time it was only on for five minutes and the screen got all screwy. So I figured maybe there was just a start up battery in there. But changing the battery didnt help either. I was rather disappointed. I was so excited to be able to keep track of speed and distance but the product doesnt even work correctly. I may have just got a bad machine, who knows. Well built device definitely worth more than you pay for All the features you want and then some. It is well designed with many great functions. Its main purpose is a speedometer with an odometer, trip meter, max speed indicator, average speed indicator, trip timer which measures how much time youve been riding, temperature indicator, counts calories, and fat burned. The speedometer function is very accurate. I compared my vehicle gps nav to the cyclometer and both readings are the same, however it is only as accurate as the wheel size you input, as other reviewers complained of readings too fast or slow and that is because of the wheel size that is input as the preset wheel size is for a 26.6" wheel, and an actual wheel that is not that size will obviously show innacurate readings. Anything smaller will show faster readings, anything bigger will do the opposite. Dont throw away the instructions as scrolling through the functions takes a while to get used to. Also they have the wheel size "codes" since the wheel size input is a 4 digit number and will be needed everytime you reset the cyclometer or replace the battery. You can even RESET all the functions seperately, just hold the left button for a few seconds over the selected function and thats it. The installation was easy after reading the instructions. The price is cheap, the product is not. It is worth way more than $9.99 for the functions and quality. I previously bought a similar schwinn 12 function cyclometer from walmart and it had solid features for the same price and this unit has added features for the same price. I gave the old unit to my wife and installed this product on my bike, I didnt even have to reinstall the wiring on my bike since the detachable computer is compatible with both sensors and docking stations. One of the functions on this cyclometer is a "maintenance program" but isnt explained how it works or what it does in the manual other than its existance. The unit also has a backlight which is also unexplained in the manual, to operate the light you have to press the left button. The light is good and makes the unit very visable at night. The only issue with the light is that when pressed, the speedometer speed is "frozen" the whole time the light is on. Your current speed wont update until the light is off, I found that to be irritating since you have to press the light many times to check your speed if your speed varies. A very handy feature is that the unit is detachable, which is good if you store your bike outside since it might rain and ruin the computer. Also if you run the wiring up the front brake cable, the entire setup will blend in and be hard to notice. This product is a definite buy, even if it was worth $50, it would still be worth it. At $9.99 its value is unbeatable. very good I purchased this gadget a month ago. I foud out that the installation was pretty easy to complete. This small gadget works very fine. Im satisfied very much. Are you kidding ... Buy it! Are you kidding. For $10 this cyclometer is more than worth it. It provides distance, speed, time, clock, odometer, avg speed, and even temperature. I have a $60 Trek on my road bike and this unit easily compares in accuracy. Dont spend the extra money ... get the $10 Schwinn. Best Bike Computer For The Price I just starting using this computer and it works great! You just have to make sure that the distance between the magnet on the spoke and the receiver are within the 1mm distance specified. If it is too close or too far away the computer wont read anything at all. This computer is extremely handy for training. Not very good if you intend to use it on bumpy trails and requires a little adjustment after going over a curb or a bump (otherwise would have given it 5 stars). However, it works perfectly for street riding. does not clear after a bike trip This piece has calorie & fat counter. But you cannot clear it after you ride bike. I want to see the calories/fat counter when I ride, my husband does not. It just keep adding so you have to write the numbers down before and after your trip. Not impressed with this at all. Love it! Im really enjoying being able to clock how far I ride. There are enough functions to keep me happy, but not overwhelmed. I like that it has a running odometer and a separate trip meter. I can reset the trip meter easily, but keep the odometer intact, or I can reset the odometer if I choose. I also like the max speed and average speed indicators and the clock comes in handy too. Good purchase This bicycle computer is excellent and is very accurate in determining length and speed. We compared two completely different brands/models of bike cyclometers and the data between the two was identical. The thermometer is "kinda close" but not exact. It is influenced by the temperature of what it is touching and direct sunlight. Its a good, durable product. All the function you could ever want Even has a back light! It was easy to install and i love seeing my speed progress. Decent for starters, but you'll need to tinker with the magnet position Setup is fairly simple WITH THE MANUAL. But DONT LOSE THAT MANUAL because it isnt an intuitive setup process. I always get confused by which buttons to press while riding, so some basic printing on the face would have been useful. The magnet position has to be precise. Really tighten the sensor on the spoke and position the sensor reader so that it cant slide any further down. The plastic ties will slip otherwise, and if the magnet is even 1/16" off center vs. the sensor reader, it will not pick it up and youll get zero on the screen. Its THAT picky. The only other negative is, it times out after a while, even while riding, so you have to press a button (which?) to get it to re-appear. Thats somewhat annoying. But what do you want for less than $10? Its a good starter computer to figure out what you really want and need from a more expensive one (before spending the money and finding youre not using most of the 16+ functions). It is reasonably accurate too. It won't work at all The QC of this product is really bad. When I put the battery in, it couldnt be set to the correct wheel code. I will never buy any product from this company. Good gadget for its price It is a good gadget for riders. 1. It is accurate in mileage - better than any of those wireless bike computers. 2. The temperate is not accurate. 3. The installation is easy. Pay attention that the direction of the bands to fasten it and the direction of the clip on your steering. 4. The battery comes inside the meter, not separately, have to change shortly after start. 5. Functions are good and practical, no gimics. Not the best, but it works When I saw this for sale, I hesitated because I couldnt imagine a cheapy ten dollar schwinn bicycle computer being any good. When I got it, it took me 5-10 minutes to get everything set up, but from there it was easy going. Many of the functions are unnecessary, and some like the thermometer arent especially accurate. But the ones I find most important (speedometer, average speed, odometer, time) work just as well as a fifty dollar cateye. I was riding side by side with a friend at the exact same speed. He had a fifty dollar computer, I had this one. We went past one of those speed gun thingies on the side of the road that tells you how fast youre going. Mine matched exactly with the sign, his was several MPHs off. Just make sure you set it to the right wheel size, because if you dont youll find that roaring down a huge hill youll reach a max speed of 15 miles per hour, or cruising along a sidewalk itll say youre going 45 miles per hour. Once you get it set up, though, its good to go. Not the best, but it works When I saw this for sale, I hesitated because I couldnt imagine a cheapy ten dollar schwinn bicycle computer being any good. The sensor must be 1mm away from the magnet but not touching! Thats basically impossible, i had to mess around with it for over an hour to get it that close. It works fine now, thank god. I DO NOT recommend this product to anyone any age. Especially a child who will cry to his/her parents complaining about how this thing doesnt work. Buy any other brand and save yourself time and frustration. Installation process is horrible! The reason why i gave this 2 stars is becuase of the entire installation process. Bad Sensor I bought this product primarily to keep track of my riding distance. After installing and inputting all my info (wheel size, maintenance schedule, weight, age, etc), I determined I might as well have flushed $10 down the toilet .... that would have been more interesting to watch than the zero on the odometer/speedometer that never changed as I rode. Tried remounting the magnet as close to the sensor as I could without them knocking into each other; no change, no indication that the comp unit was getting any impulses from down there. Oh well, at least the clock worked.... although another problem is when the sun shines brightly on the LC display, it seems to make all the characters visible, even when the unit is powered off. Not too easy to read that way. Only conclusion I can come to is I got a unit with a bum sensor, but it didnt encourage me to replace it with the same type of device, especially after reading other reviews about its questionable accuracy. A tad feature-bloated for this user, my next purchase will be something more mechanical with basic functions. Sometimes low tech is preferable, especially when pedaling ones self around! Very good product, this product is excellent for not very demanding, very good cyclists that of taking the control of the calories and consummated fat, as well as to be able to taste the temperature like which is one in that moment. good investment made, very good Very good product, this product is excellent for not very demanding, very good cyclists that of taking the control of the calories and consummated fat, as well as to be able to taste the temperature like which is one in that moment. good investment made, very good so far, so good the only reason this is not getting five stars is because i need to ensure the longevity of this speedometer. but the central features of this speedometer-- like speed and distance-- work quite well. Installation is easy and securing the stage to the bicycle itself is simple. Parts and such seem sturdy. The instruments speeds and distances are not only accurate, but precise-- computer measures thousandths of miles! An interesting feature is that the computer seems to know when you are walking beside your bicycle-- when i walked beside the bike through a hallway it only registered distances in hundredths of miles instead of thousandths and didnt register a speed in mph even though it recorded these small distances. Even the thermometer is accurate, at least in the summertime (range minimum is 32 F-- pretty lousy). But this, the calorie and fat burning calculators are all frivolous features which have nothing to do with the speedometers central purpose. The instruction manual says the computer is backlit, but does not say how to activate the backlight, nor have i been able to implement this feature through my own discovery. Ive incorporated a separate, small lamp to illuminate the computers face during night rides. Switching between modes/features on the computer is a little confusing since the instruction manual does not accurately describe how to properly utilize all of its functions. the numbers are large and easy to read. I look forward to many rides with this instrument on board my bike. I recommend this purchase over the lesser-priced Bell products or the cheap things from Wal-Mart. Well worth the $30. Im a little skeptical about this one... It was pretty easy to put together if you follow the directions. The only problem is that I find the speeds a little hard to believe. My girlfried and i bike about 12 miles everyday and it takes us about 2 hours to do it. That would mean that we are averaging about 6mph right? not according to this little device. this device will have you thinking you are Lance Armstrong. 17 mph up a steep hill? I dont think so. it has a lot of other really cool features though. i still reccommend that you purchase this device and see how it works for you. Great little gadget Oh well I did install it yet, but I turned it one and flicked through it functions. It seems to be a sturday unit that will make you biking a lot more interesting - if you like looking at your numbers. Very cheap and very functional unit, and I say - wired makes it more precise. Ive owned two of these and ridden in all 4 seasons, driving rain, blinding snow, and even the occasional sunny, warm day. Ive never had a problem with either, and find them very easy to set up and calibrate, easy to use, and totally accurate, dependable and reliable. Under $10! Cant be beat! Ride on!! How fast am I going? by: Anonymous On: 2007-03-05 All the features work great except the speedometer, witch was the only reason that I bought the thing.Do you think a thirteen year old kid can ride sixty miles per hour under his own power?I got my dad to drive along side me to see how fast I was really going. It turns out I am only going thirty miles per hour. I do not recommend getting this computer... a great bike coputer this is the best bike computer i have ever owned i have 4 of them for all my bikes and at the price they are much better than the more expensive ones i have owned a great product schwinn thank you. Neat gadget for the money Has more functions than others yet less expensive. Works great! Displays time, distance travelled, speed and other useful stuff.
