Great Commuter Light     On: 2007-01-13

My 12 mile bicycle commute takes me along well lit city streets and dark expressways, rain or shine. For many months I got by with lots of blinkies on the back of my bike and a 1 watt LED headlight to show the way, but I realized that, while I was visible to others, I couldnt see the road well enough to avoid hazards, especially in rain or with lots of on-coming traffic, so I decided to get a more powerful light. My research showed many brands and two technology choices: halogen or HID. The 25 watt JetLite halogen fits the bill for me. While HID lights give more light and draw less current, they are much more expensive and replacement lights are 6 to 8x the cost of replacement halogen bulbs. Further, the 25watt halogen light, while not an HID, is very bright. Jetlites battery pack provides 2 hours of continuous use at 25 watts and 3 hours at 15 (dim setting). This is more than enough for my 12 mile each way commute on the darkest day. The light is very high quality with superb connectors and helpful customer service. I only reduced my score to 4 stars because the light is initially somewhat difficult to slide in and out of the handlebar mounting without applying some lubrication. Otherwise the handlebar mountins system is excellent. I really like the fuel gauge and the smart charger. Plug it in and dont worry about damaging the expensive battery pack by overcharging. I punch the fuel gauge at the end of my ride and know how far I can ride before needing to charge my battery. I looked at all the major brands and red reviews finally narrowing my choice to Jet Lites, Turbocat and Light in Motion. I picked Jetlite because of the incredibly good reviews at mountain biking websites and for the smart charger. I picked Amazon because it had the best price. I am very pleased with my purchase and the speed with which it was delivered. If you decide on HID, Jet Lite makes them as well, you still get the smart charger, best in class connectors, quality construction and great customer service.
